28 members of the Emory University Swimming and Diving Teams were recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for their athletic and academic efforts during the 2016-17 season, including 18 who were named a Scholar All-American.
The CSCAA Scholar All-America award is presented to all swimmers and divers that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections are awarded to competitors who meet the same academic standards, while also achieving a 'B' time standard, but did not compete in their National Championship.
Earning Scholar All-America recognition for the women were Sia Beasley, Marissa Bergh, Megan Campbell, Cindy Cheng, Maria Kyle, Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe, Meg Taylor and Julia Wawer. The Eagles saw an additional seven members honored as honorable mentions: Phoebe Edwards, Shelby Frugé, Amelia Hartje, Isabella Issa, Alison Mai, Katelyn Mitchell and Mia Morrell.
10 men were chosen as Scholar All-Americans: Christian Baker, Hayes Burdette-Sapp, Mitchell Cooper, Henry Copses, Trey Kolleck, Sage Ono, Matthew Rogers, Oliver Smith, Cooper Tollen and Andrew Wilson. Three Eagles were also selected as Honorable Mention Scholar All-America: Zachary Chen, John Copses and Matthew Varraveto.
In addition, both the Emory Men’s and Women’s teams were named CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams after recording GPAs higher than 3.0 for the past academic school year. The women posted a collective 3.47 while the men average a 3.46 GPA.
The Eagles finished the 2016-17 season in historic fashion as Emory became just the second institution ever to sweep the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in the same year, joining Kenyon College as the only two Division III programs to accomplish the feat.
