Swimming & Diving Trio Collect UAA Weekly Awards

The Emory University Swimming and Diving trio of seniors Fiona Muir, Thomas Gordon and freshman Lucas Bumgarner have been chosen as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for their performances at the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Muir closed out her impeccable career this weekend, helping the Eagles to their 10th consecutive national championship. Muir was an individual national champion in three different events: the 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle and added national titles in both the 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Medley Relay. In addition, Muir earned All-America honors in the 400 Free Relay (2nd) and 800 Free Relay (3rd). She closes out her Emory swimming career as a 17-time national champion and 25-time All-American, marks that place her first and second all-time in program history.

Gordon won a pair of individual titles in the 500 and 1,650 Freestyles to help the Eagles to a national runner-up finish. Gordon defended each of his titles in the distance freestyles, winning the 500 in a time of 4:24.19 before winning the 1,650 at 15:14.84. Gordon added All-America honors in the 800 Free Relay (2nd, 6:31.88) and was an All-America Honorable Mention in the 200 Freestyle (9th, 1:38.88). Over his four-year career, Gordon was a four-time individual national champion and a 15-time All-American.

Bumgarner earned All-America status in both diving events this past weekend, as he helped Emory edge out Kenyon College for a second place finish. Bumgarner was the national runner-up in the 1-meter dive with a score of 515.75 before taking sixth in the 3-meter at 523.20. The second place finish was the highest finish on the podium for an Emory male diver since 1990.
