Dr. Michael Huey Retires As Emory Athletics Medical Director -- Dr. Courtney Gleason To Assume Duties

Dr. Michael Huey, a fixture in Emory Athletics for over 16 years, has announced his retirement as the department’s Director of Medical Services.  Dr. Huey will continue his service to Emory Athletics as a team physician.

Huey came to Emory in January 2002 after serving as the Director of Student Health Care Center and Associate Clinical Professor of Community Health and Family Practice at the University of Florida (1994-2002). While at Florida, he was also one of the team physicians for the university’s athletics program.

Huey also serves as the Executive Director For Emory University’s Student Health and Counseling Services, a post he will hold until his retirement from that department on July 31 of this year. He is a member of a number of professional affiliations including the American College of Sports Medicine, American College Health Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

“Dr. Huey has been instrumental in developing and implementing the comprehensive healthcare that we provide our student-athletes on a daily basis,” said Emory Head Athletics Trainer John Dunham.  “Mike has had an unwavering commitment in delivering outstanding health care to Emory athletics, and his efforts and dedication are second to none.  And while he is stepping down as the Medical Director for Emory Athletics, I’m extremely pleased that he will stay on as a team physician.”

Dr. Huey graduated summa cum laude from the University of California Los Angeles with a Bachelor Degree in Biological Sciences. Huey earned his Medical Degree from UCLA School of Medicine in 1979 and completed his Family Practice Residency at Ventura County Medical Center (California).

“One of my favorite things about working at Emory for 16 years has been serving as a team physician for Emory Athletics and working with my wonderful colleagues at Emory Sports Medicine,” said Dr. Huey. “I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity and I look forward to having an ongoing, albeit more limited, role following my retirement from full-time duties.

“I am very pleased that Dr. Courtney Gleason is becoming the new Head Team Physician and I know that she will do an outstanding job.   We are very lucky to have her at Emory.”

Dr. Courtney Gleason

Moving into the role of Emory Athletics Medical Director effective January 1, 2018 is Dr. Courtney Gleason. A native of Atlanta, Gleason joined Emory Healthcare in the spring of 2017.  Dr. Gleason is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, the Emory

University Pediatrics Residency program, and the Harvard University, Boston Children’s Hospital Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. She also completed three-years of an Orthopedics Residency program at the University of Florida. Following her fellowship, Courtney was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Sports Medicine and Pediatrics at Brown University and served as a team physician.

“We are looking forward to having Courtney assume the duties as Medical Director,” Dunham said. “She has already embraced and will enhance the contributions that Mike Huey and all of our team physicians have made to Emory Athletics.”
