The Emory men’s and women’s cross country teams came through with first-place finishes at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Hoover, Alabama.

Competing on the Spain Park Course, the men’s squad paced the 15-team field with 37 points.  Warner Southern College claimed the runner-up spot with 90 points while Columbus State took home third place (104 pts.).

Junior Michael Rothbart led a strong Emory contingent, covering the 8K course in a time of 28:07, good for sixth place overall (No. 4 scoring position) out of 109 entries.  Freshman Tommy Fyffe was the second Eagle to cross the line with a mark of 28:18 which ranked eighth on the final scoresheet.  Senior Rob Leventhal (28:23) and sophomore Vikram Srivastava (28:24), posted ninth- and 10th-place finishes, respectively, while rookie Alex Robin rounded out the team’s scoring efforts, clocking a 28:36 that placed him 15th overall.

The 15th-ranked women put on a dominating performance, racing to the top spot out of 20 teams with 32 points.  Alabama-Birmingham (92 pts) and Mercer (125 pts.) accounted for the Nos. 2 & 3 spots. 

Senior Amy DiBianca finished in the No. 1 scoring position and second overall out of 149 runners after turning in a 5K time of 19:29. Junior Lauren Shores was the Eagles’ No. 2 finisher and fourth overall following an effort of 19:47.   Sophomores Melissa Jones (20:02 and Natalie Waryck (20:46) earned sixth and 12th place, respectively, with freshman Rebecca Flink landing the squad’s final scoring spot (17th overall) with a 21:00.    

The 2006 women’s team would later advance to the NCAA Championships where it would finish 14th, still the program’s best finish since that season.
