Dr. Michael Vienna has been Emory University's Clyde Partin Sr., Director of Athletics since July of 2015. Vienna came to Emory from Salisbury University where he had been an athletics administrator for 26 years which included 23 years as the Director of Athletics and Recreation. 

Since arriving at Emory the athletics program has continued its tradition of success having won nine team national titles and 26 UAA championships.  Each year the program has placed in the top ten of the national Director’s cup just as it has done for 18 of the past 19 years.  The program has also seen several positive initiatives which have included a comprehensive five-year strategic plan, new partnerships, additional staffing, facility enhancements, reimagining the Eagle Edge program and the addition of women’s golf.

During Vienna’s stint at Salisbury, Sea Gull teams garnered 17 team and 14 individual national championships, 14 national second-place finishes and 179 conference championships.  In addition, the athletics program saw both capital improvements and the addition of four varsity sports.  Facility improvements included two new soccer fields and a team building, a Maggs Physical Activities Center addition, a new weight room, new stadium, new outdoor tennis complex, track renovation, new outdoor athletic complex design and funding, acquisition and renovation of an indoor tennis facility and the University Fitness Club. Vienna also held a variety of key assignments at Salisbury including that of Adjunct Faculty Member, Associate Director of Athletics, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs and Acting University Judicial Administrator.

Dr. Vienna currently serves on the NCAA Division III Management Council, the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, the Legislative Relief Subcommittee, the Playing and Practice Season Subcommittee, and is a mentor in the NCAA Pathway Program.  In addition, Dr. Vienna is a member of Atlanta’s Year of Basketball Working Group

Previous NCAA committee service has included Chair of the National Nominating Committee, Championships Committee, the Division III LGBTQ Working Group, Men’s Soccer National Committee and men’s basketball regional committee.

He has been a member of NACDA since 1985 and a member of the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators since 1995 having served on its national executive board (2007-09).  Has been a member of the Athletic Management Editorial Board since, 1997.  He served as president and vice president of the Capital Athletic Conference from 1997-2001 and was the conference treasurer from 2004 until 2013.

In 2007, Vienna was named the NACDA Athletic Director of the Year for Division III's Southeast Region. He was a recipient of Salisbury University's Presidential Appreciation Award and is a member of the Allegheny County (NY) and Salisbury University Halls of Fame. 

In addition to working at Salisbury University, he has experience as a head basketball and golf coach and athletic director at the two-year college level, assistant soccer coach at both the Division I and III levels, a physical education instructor, and has worked in professional sports and the sporting goods and health club industries. 

Vienna attended the University of Mount Union where he earned a B.A. in health and physical education.   He then obtained his master’s in sports management and Ph.D. in higher educational administration from Kent State University. 

A native of Belfast, NY, Mike’s family includes wife, Janine, daughters Ashley and Jacquelyn and three grandchildren Quinn, Langston and Emersyn.
