The Emory University baseball team dropped the opening game of a
doubleheader with Edgewood 7-6, but bounced back to win the late
contest 10-5 at Chappell Park on Friday.
In the second game, after falling behind 1-0 after half an inning,
the Eagles answered back with three runs in the bottom of the
first, as sophomore Jonathan Reilly picked up an
RBI double, junior Patrick Riebsame drove in a run
with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore Kevin
O’Connor plated a run on an RBI ground out.
Emory added one more run in the second to take a 4-1 lead with
Reilly’s second RBI double of the game.
Edgewood would pull the game to within two runs with a run in the
top of the third, but the Eagles would answer back in the bottom of
the fourth with three more runs, including a pair on a double from
Riebsame.
With the score 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Emory
scored three more runs to secure a 10-3 lead. The Eagles were
able to withstand two Edgewood runs in the top of the ninth to earn
the victory.
Junior Paul Schwendel pitched six innings for
Emory to earn the victory, allowing three runs on four hits and
striking out four batters. Schwendel improved to 2-2 on the
year with the victory, while bringing his season ERA to 4.60.
Edgewood’s Miles Mayer started and took the loss, falling to
0-2 on the year.
Reilly would finish the second game three-for-five with three RBIs,
while Riebsame chipped in three RBIs and Dan
Molnar walked three times and scored three runs.
In the first game of the day, a seven-inning affair, the Eagles
were unable to hold onto an early three run lead, after a
Jay Page bases loaded walk and an O’Connor
two run double put Emory on top 3-0 after one inning.
Edgewood would go on to score five unanswered runs, but Emory would
tie the game at five runs apiece in the fifth inning on a Reilly
RBI single and a Riebsame sacrifice fly.
Edgewood would again take a lead in the top of the seventh, scoring
two runs to take a 7-5 lead. Facing their final at bat of the
game, the Eagles would a run on an Edgewood error, and load the
bases with two outs. However, Scott Schwartz
hit a fly ball to deep, straightaway centerfield that was caught by
the Edgewood centerfielder to end the contest.
Emory senior Brian Cournoyer took the loss,
falling to 2-2 on the year, while Edgewood’s Patrick Clerkin
earned the win to improve to 1-0.
Reilly combined to go six-for-nine with four RBIs in the two games,
while Riebsame drove in four runs and O’Connor three.
Dan Molnar walked six times and scored four runs in the two
games.
With the split, Emory brought its record to 12-11 on the season,
while Edgewood went to 6-2 on the campaign. The Eagles will
return to action on Tuesday, March 30th, playing at
LaGrange College at 6:00 PM.
