Emory Comes From Behind to Defeat Washington & Lee, 8-5

The Emory University baseball team scored five runs in its final at bat to defeat Washington and Lee University 8-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park.

After falling behind 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the Eagles' bats broke through with a five run outburst on four hits.  With one out in the inning, Gabe Shiver and Kevin O'Connor got things started for Emory with back-to-back walks.  A single by Jonathan Reilly in the next at bat scored a run for Emory, and a base hit to centerfield for Patrick Riebsame tied the game at five runs apiece.  After a walk to Andrew Cohn loaded the bases, senior Dan Molnar came through with the game-winning hit, a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Reilly.  RBI singles for Will Vaughn and Andrew DeYoung brought Emory's lead to three runs.

Senior close Zeb Heidt, who entered the game in the eighth with the Eagles down by two, got an inning ending double play in the frame before pitching a hitless ninth to end the game and earn the victory.

The Eagles got off to a quick start in the contest, scoring runs off a Patrick Riebsame sacrifice fly, and a Dan Molnar RBI bunt.  After the Generals evened the game with two runs in the top of the second, the Eagles took the lead again in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double for O'Connor.

Senior Marc Terranova made his first career start for Emory, leaving the game after three with a 3-2 lead.  Senior Brian Cournoyer would allow just one unearned run in the sixth inning that would tie the game, until Washington and Lee broke through with two runs off reliever Connor McGuiness in the eighth.

Emory's pitching was helped by its defense, which turned three double plays in the contest.  The two teams each left 13 runners on base during the contest.

Riebsame finished the game two-for-four, and now leads the Eagles with a .471 batting average and eight runs batted in.  Molnar went two-for-three in the contest with two RBIs and a walk, and is now just three walks shy of tying the school's career record.

With the win, Emory improves to 2-4 on the season, while Washington and Lee dropped to 0-3 with the loss.  The Eagles will return to action on Friday, February 26th at 2:00 PM against Rhodes College, at the Rawlings Southern Classic, hosted by Emory University.
