Hansen Spins Complete Game Shutout as Emory Blanks Marietta, 8-0

Junior Hans Hansen was in complete control on Thursday afternoon, spinning a complete game shutout as Emory defeated Marietta College, 8-0, on day two of the 2016 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

Hansen faced just five over the minimum in the game, allowing seven hits, striking out five and did not issue a free pass. With the win, he improved to 9-1 on the year and lowered his earned-run average to an outstanding 1.15 for the season.

The shutout is the first ever by an Eagle in the NCAA tournament in program history and just the second shutout registered by an Emory team in 71 all-time NCAA tournament contests. The last Eagles whitewash came back on May 24th, 2003 as Reed Harvey, Steve Zaychik and John Illius combined to blank DeSales University, 7-0, in the College World Series.

At the plate, sophomore Bubby Terp followed up his career day on Wednesday (2-3, HR, 4 RBI) with a four hit effort and driving in three more runs while swiping his first career stolen base. Through two South Regional contests, Terp is batting a red-hot .750 (6-for-8) and has driven in seven of Emory's 14 runs.

Junior Brian Hernandez added two hits and two RBI with seniors Dylan Eisner, Chris Slivka and junior Philip Maldari each chipped in with a RBI for the Eagles. Junior Chris Young went 1-for-4 in the game, pushing his hit-streak to 10 games, the longest by an Eagle this season.

In the top half of the first, Hernandez led off the scoring with a sac fly to right to score senior David Coble who walked to begin the game. Emory added another run in the fourth as Terp collected a two-out single to score Eisner. Five different Eagles batters tallied a run batted in during the fifth inning as Emory broke open the game to make it 7-0.

Terp drove in his third run of the game to provide the final 8-0 margin in the ninth inning as he again singled to bring home Eisner with two outs.

Marietta has now seen its season come to an end thanks to the Eagles for the second straight year, wrapping up their 2016 campaign with 28-18 record.

Emory (32-10) will face the winner of Shenandoah-Birmingham Southern at 11:00 AM on Friday morning at William R. Bowdoin Field on the campus of Berry College in Mount Berry, GA.
