The Emory University Baseball team closed out its seven-game home stand with an unblemished record Sunday afternoon as the Eagles took both games of the doubleheader from Washington & Lee University at Chappell Park in Atlanta.
With the weekend sweep of the Generals, the Eagles pushed their overall record on the season to 7-0, marking just the fourth time in program history an Emory team has started the season with a 7-0 mark or better, joining the 1997, 2004 and 2007 squads which accomplished the feat.
Junior Nick Chambers registered the Eagles' third walk off of the season while sophomore Billy Dimlow allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, striking out eight, as Emory took game one by a score of 2-1.
In game two, four pitchers combined for the four-hit shutout led by senior starter Luke Emmett. At the plate, the Eagles scored in all but one offensive inning en route to their largest runs outburst of the year as Emory finished off the weekend series by a 13-0 margin over the Generals.
Game 1 – Emory 2, Washington & Lee 1
Sophomore Thomas Baumgartner led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and advanced to second on the successful sacrifice bunt by junior Bubby Terp. Sophomore David Draper followed with a base hit to center to put runners on the corners with just one out. Chambers then hit a deep fly ball to centerfield allowing Baumgartner to score the winning run without a throw.
Senior Kyle Monk recorded his third victory, tossing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts in relief of Dimlow. Monk escaped a hairy situation in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and just one out by getting Ryan Weston to pop up to shortstop before striking out Cory Patton looking to retire the side. In the ninth inning, Monk allowed a leadoff single before retiring the next three W&L batters.
Dimlow was strong again on Sunday, giving up a single unearned run on one hit in seven innings. He struck out eight batters compared to one walk.
Draper along with seniors Jeff Ronpirin, Brian Hernandez all tallied two hits apiece to led the Emory offense.
Game 2 – Emory 13, Washington & Lee 0
10 different Eagles recorded at least one base hit with seven hitters driving in at least one run as the Eagles took game two from the Generals.
Freshman Ryan Adelman and junior Danny Kerning drove in five of Emory's six runs in the fifth inning to bust open a 3-0 ballgame. Adelman finished the contest 2-for-4 at the plate with a game-high three RBI, adding one run scored and one walk to his ledger. Kerning was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs driven in and also added one walk and one run scored.
Sophomore NJ Kim, junior Bubby Terp and freshmen Richard Brereton and David Shore each registered one RBI in as well for the Eagles.
Senior Chris Young notched a team-best three hits, going 3-for-3 to go along with scoring a game-high three runs.
Emmett with classmate Andrew Doetsch, sophomore Charlie Redovian and freshman Michael Leeder combined for the four-hit shutout in the win. Emmett went six innings to improve to 2-0, striking out four hitters and giving up just three hits. Redovian allowed just one hit to go along with one strikeout in his one inning of work. Doetsch and Leeder combined for to throw the final two no-hit innings, tallying three punch outs to go with one free pass.
The Eagles travel to Montgomery, AL on Friday and Saturday to face the Huntingdon College Hawks in the first two games of the three-game series. Both teams will then head to Atlanta to conclude the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at Chappell Park.
