Millsaps Hands Emory Baseball First Loss of Season

The Emory University Baseball team dropped its first game of the 2017 season Saturday afternoon, falling to Millsaps College, 17-4, at Twenty Field in Jackson, Mississippi. The loss snaps Emory's 11-game winning streak, the fourth-longest streak in program history.

The Eagles committed six errors in the defeat, leading to nine unearned runs, five of which came during Millsaps' nine-run fourth inning. The Majors scored 17 unanswered runs after Emory opened up a 3-0 advantage through the first two innings.

Sophomore NJ Kim began the scoring in the top of the first, scoring on an errant throw by Millsaps' Chris Guerin on a single by senior Jeff Ronpirin. Senior Chris Young made it 3-0 an inning later, blasting his first home run of the season over the left centerfield fence.

Wes Lassere and Joseph Steams combined to drive in four runs with a pair of home runs off senior Jackson Weeg in the fourth inning. Back-to-back errors by senior Philip Maldari and junior Nick Chambers with two outs extended the inning, allowing five more runs to score as the Majors took a 9-3 lead.

Millsaps added runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to build a 14-run cushion. Sophomore Michael Wilson tripled for the Eagles to plate freshman David Shore in the ninth inning to provide the 17-4 final.

Emory looks to bounce back on Sunday afternoon in the second game of the two-game set. First pitch from Jackson, Mississippi is scheduled for 1:00 EST.
