Top-Ranked Emory Baseball Trounces Oglethorpe, 17-1

The top-ranked Emory University Baseball team showcased an offensive clinic Wednesday afternoon, dismantling crosstown rival Oglethorpe University, 17-1, at Chappell Park in Atlanta, GA to improve to 13-1.

The Eagles posted season-highs with 17 runs on 21 hits, marking the first time an Emory ball club registered 20 or more hits in a game since the Eagles collected 26 base knocks against LaGrange on March 30, 2010. In total, 14 different Eagles recorded at least one hit with 10 batters driving in at least one run.

Senior Wilson Morgan went 3-for-4 with a game-high three RBIs while junior Bubby Terp added a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Jeff Ronpirin and sophomore Thomas Baumgartner collected two RBIs a piece for the Eagles. Sophomore NJ Kim reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a RBI. He scored a game-high four runs.

Senior Luke Emmett tossed five shutout innings, facing just one over the minimum, to earn his third win of the season. Emmett allowed two hits, both singles, and one walk while striking out two. Senior Andrew Doetsch and freshmen John Ross and Michael Leeder added scoreless frames with one strikeout out of the bullpen.

Leading 3-0 heading into the fourth inning, the Eagles sealed the game as they sent 12 men to the plate in the eight-run inning to build a double-digit advantage. Emory's first seven batters reached base safely to begin the inning with sophomore David Draper plating the first run of the barrage with a single up the middle to score senior Philip Maldari. Kim followed with a bases-loaded four-pitch walk to push home senior Chris Young. Morgan, Ronpirin, Terp, and Young all added run scoring hits in the frame to extend the lead to 11-0.

The Eagles tacked on four more runs to move in front 15-0 in the fifth. Morgan tripled to right to score Kim before crossing the plate himself on a sac fly by Ronpirin. Baumgartner singled through the left side to bring home Terp and senior Brian Hernandez.

Emory closed out the onslaught in the seventh as sophomore Michael Wilson doubled down the left field line to plate sophomore Alec Granger. Sophomore Eric Terry picked up a RBI on a sac fly to left as junior Danny Kerning came across with the team's 17th run.

The Eagles begin a three-game weekend series against Piedmont College Friday evening in Demorest, GA. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
