Late-Inning Rally Lifts WashU to Series Sweep over Emory Baseball

Washington University used a six-run seventh inning to erase a 5-1 deficit to complete the series sweep over the Emory University Baseball team Sunday afternoon at Kelly Field in St. Louis, MO.

The Eagles scored four runs in the top half of the inning to break a 1-1 tie to move in front by four. Senior Wilson Morgan gave Emory the lead with a sac fly to center to score freshman Richard Brereton. Junior Bubby Terp added a RBI single two batters later before senior Philip Maldari cracked a two-run double to center to give the Eagles a 5-1 cushion.

The Bears came storming back however in the bottom half of the inning, scoring six times off senior Kyle Monk and Brereton to take a 7-5 lead they would not surrender.

Monk got the start in the finale and cruised through his first six innings of work before running into trouble in the seventh. He retired the first 10 hitters he faced and lost his shutout bid in the sixth inning. He finished with seven strikeouts in the outing. Brereton was handed the loss, the first of his career, as he allowed two runs (1 ER) in 1.1 innings pitched.

Senior Brian Hernandez led the Emory offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Terp and Brereton added multi-hit efforts with Brereton swiping a pair of bases for the Eagles.

Emory tries to snap their six-game losing skid when the team returns to the diamond next weekend against Brandeis University. First game is set for 3:00 PM Friday afternoon in Waltham, MA.
