The Emory University Baseball program won its fifth consecutive game Tuesday night, walloping crosstown rival Oglethorpe University in a non-conference matchup at Anderson Field on the campus of OU.
The Eagles scored a season-high 19 runs on 16 hits as they defeated the Stormy Petrels by a 16-run margin for the second time in as many meetings this season.
Emory spotted Oglethorpe a 2-0 lead after the first inning before the game shifted in favor of the Eagles. The Blue and Gold scored 19 unanswered runs, all coming over a three-inning stretch. Emory exploded for 10 runs in the third inning, tacked on six more in the fourth and added a three spot in the fifth on its way to the 19-3 victory.
Eight of the nine Eagle starters recorded at least one hit on the evening with seven batters collecting at least one RBI. Junior Nick Chambers had a career night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and drove in a career-high five RBIs.
Seniors Wilson Morgan (2-for-4, 2 R) and Philip Maldari (2-for-3, 3 R, 2B) each drove in three runs with Morgan and classmate Brian Hernandez both hitting home runs for the Eagles. Hernandez finished 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.
Freshman Richard Brereton made his first collegiate start on the mound, working five innings and allowed two runs (1 ER) on four hits to record his third win of the season. He struck out a career-high seven batters.
Following the two-run first inning Brereton settled in, retiring the next nine batters he faced before a single to lead off the fifth. After a one-out double to give the Stormy Petrels two runners in scoring position, the Darien, CT sent down the next two batters via strikeout and a groundout to escape the inning unscathed.
Brereton also helped his cause with the stick, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored before being lifted to start the sixth inning.
Emory returns to action next Tuesday, April 18th, as No.-2 Birmingham-Southern travels to Atlanta for the final non-conference contest of the year. First pitch from Chappell Park is set for 3:00 PM. The Eagles were victorious in the first meeting of the season, a 4-1 decision in Birmingham, AL on March 15th.
