Emory Baseball Earns Friday Split with NYU

After suffering a late-inning defeat to New York University in game one, the Emory University Baseball team used a 13-run outburst in game two to earn a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Game One – NYU 2, Emory 1

Three infield singles in the top of the ninth off senior Kyle Monk helped the Violets push across the game-winning run as NYU opened the weekend series with a one-run victory.

Senior Jackson Weeg worked eight strong innings, surrendering one unearned run on eight hits and four walks as he settled for the no decision. He added five strikeouts to push his career total to 299, 15 shy of the program record.

Senior Brian Hernandez provided a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth to score freshman Richard Brereton with the game-tying run. Hernandez finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate.

Classmate Wilson Morgan and junior Bubby Terp both collected a pair of hits to combine for four of the seven Emory hits in the ballgame.

Game Two – Emory 13, NYU 6

After being held to one run on seven hits in the first contest, the Eagles offense poured in 13 runs on 13 hits to improve to 25-12 (7-7 UAA) on the season.

Junior Nick Chambers went 3-for-5 at the top of the lineup, driving in a team-high three runs and scoring a game-high four times to spearhead the Emory offensive efforts. Hernandez added two hits in five trips to plate to go along with three RBIs. Sophomore Thomas Baumgartner brought in a pair with a one out double in the fifth and senior Jeff Ronpirin also plated two runs, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored.

Monk rebounded after taking the loss in the first game, pitching 4.1 innings in relief to earn his eighth win of the year. He allowed just one run on three hits while striking out seven. Senior Andrew Doetsch tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win.

The Eagles wrap up the 2017 regular season tomorrow afternoon with two more contests with the Violets, beginning at 12:10 EST. Prior to first pitch Emory will recognize its nine-member senior class: Andrew Doetsch, Luke Emmett, Brian Hernandez, Philip Maldari, Wilson Morgan, Kyle Monk, Jeff Ronpirin, Jackson Weeg and Chris Young with a special ceremony starting at 11:30 AM. The ceremony will be broadcasted live on emoryathletics.com for those unable to attend.
