Emory Baseball Salvages Split at Covenant; Saturday's Finale Postponed

The Emory University Baseball team was in action Friday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader against Covenant College on Lookout Mountain. The Scots won game one, 8-3, while the Eagles salvaged the split in game two, 10-4.

The finale of the series, scheduled for 2:00 PM on Saturday at Chappell Park in Atlanta, has been postponed due to heavy rain in the forecast. No makeup date has been announced.

Game 1 – Covenant 8, Emory 3

The Scots began the scoring early in game one, crossing home plate twice in the first inning and again in the second off sophomore Richard Brereton.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth, the Eagles cut into the deficit with a pair of runs. After Covenant starter, Matt Reitz, sent down the first 10 Emory batters he faced, the Eagles' 2-4-5 hitters helped the team get on the scoreboard. Freshman Drew Bartholow worked a four-pitch walk before senior Bubby Terp singled. Sophomore Christopher Stern then smoked a ball to deep right field, scoring both runners easily.

The Scots extended their lead with a four-spot in the fifth and another run in the sixth to lead 8-2 going into the seventh and final inning. Emory mounted a rally, loading the bases to start the inning and saw junior Eric Terry deliver a run-scoring single to cut the Covenant lead to 8-3. The Scots' Ross Skipper was able to avoid further damage however, sending down junior Jackson Grayson down on strikes before forcing Brereton to ground into the game-ending 5-3 double play.

Stern went 1-for-2 with two RBI to pace the Emory offense while Brereton tied his career-high with seven strikeouts in the defeat.

Game 2 – Emory 10, Covenant 4

The Eagles scored 10 unanswered runs to earn the split in game two, defeating the Scots 10-4. Covenant plated four runs in the home half of the first inning but it was all Emory for the rest of the contest.

Freshman Christian Bradley picked up his first win of his career, pitching three perfect innings in relief to go along with three strikeouts. Senior Mitch Kerner and junior Eric Terry collected three hits apiece while Brereton led all hitters with a career-high four RBI in a 2-for-4 effort.

Down by two runs in the top of the fifth, the Eagles plated six runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Brereton, to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Stern added two hits in the contest, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and RBI while senior Nick Chambers also went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

With the rainout on Saturday, the Eagles next game will be on Tuesday afternoon against crosstown foe Oglethorpe University. First pitch from Chappell Park is set for 2:00 PM.
