Nine-Run First Inning Propels Emory Baseball Past Oglethorpe, 13-1

A nine-run first inning, including a grand slam by sophomore Richard Brereton, propelled the Emory University Baseball team to a 13-1 victory over crosstown rival Oglethorpe University on Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Brereton finished the day with a team-high three hits, going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Classmate Christopher Stern continued his sizzling start to the season, extending his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-5 effort while driving in three runs. Seniors Bubby Terp, Nick Chambers, junior Thomas Baumgartner freshman Jack Rubenstein added multi-hit performances on the afternoon as Emory as team scored 13 runs on 16 hits to improve to 3-3.

Freshman Jack Moore allowed just one run on four hits in five innings of work to record his first career win. He added four strikeouts while issuing three free passes. Fellow newcomer Jared Gaer tossed two scoreless frames in relief with juniors Brian Taggett and Sam Brzowski adding scoreless innings of work as Emory kept Oglethorpe to no runs over the final eight innings.

After the Stormy Petrels got on the board in the top half of the first with a sac fly by senior Adrian Celata, the Eagles wasted no time responding as they sent 12 men to the plate in the home half of the inning. Stern, Chambers and senior Mitch Kerner all had run-scoring base hits before Brereton capped off the onslaught with a towering shot to left on the first pitch he saw of his second at-bat of the inning.

Stern added a two-run double in the fifth inning while senior Josh Rosenblatt had a pinch hit two-bagger to score freshman Jake Kessinger in the seventh.

Next up for the Eagles will be a three-game series at NC Wesleyan, beginning Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at 12:00 PM.
