The Emory University Baseball team split another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game at North Carolina Wesleyan, 7-5, before dropping game two, 5-3. The Eagles improved to 4-4 on the season with the split while the Battling Bishops moved to 3-3.
Game 1 – Emory 7, NC Wesleyan 5 (7 innings)
The Eagles used a four-run rally in the top of the seventh to erase a two-run deficit to record the team's fourth win of the season. Sophomore Christopher Stern and senior Bubby Terp had back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 5-5 before Terp scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch later in the inning. Sophomore Ryan Adelman knocked in an insurance run, plating classmate Richard Brereton.
Freshman Jared Gaer allowed just one base runner in the bottom of the inning as closed the door on his first win of his career. Gaer pitched a total of three scoreless in relief, allowing just the one runner to reach. He added a pair of strikeouts.
Stern and Brereton both drove in two runs in the first game and collected two hits apiece. Freshman Drew Bartholow went 2-for-3 with a game-high two runs scored and Adelman was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Game 2 – NC Wesleyan 5, Emory 3
NC Wesleyan's J.D. Makauskas held the Eagles scoreless through the first seven frames as the Battling Bishops mounted a 5-0 advantage with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Emory staked another late-inning rally, scoring three times with two outs in the eighth. Brereton tripled home senior Josh Rosenblatt and scored as Terp doubled to left following a pitching change. Stern cut the NC Wesleyan led to two with another RBI single to bring home Terp but the Emory threat was squashed as freshman Jack Rubenstein grounded out for the final out. In the ninth, the Eagles went down in order to split the afternoon.
Stern went 1-for-4 with a RBI as he extended his hitting streak to eight games. Brereton had another two-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with a RBI, walk and run scored.
Emory returns to the diamond Wednesday evening with a road contest at Berry College. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM in Rome, GA.
