No.-13 ranked Case Western Reserve University took both games of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader from the Emory University Baseball team at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. With the two defeats, the Eagles drop to 10-12 overall and 1-2 in the UAA while the Spartans improve to 15-3 and 2-1 in conference play.
Game 1: Case Western Reserve 12, Emory 6
In game one of the double dip, Emory raced out to an early 3-0 lead before the Spartans used 12 unanswered runs to earn the six-run victory.
Junior Jackson Grayson drove in the game's first two runs with a single in the second inning before sophomore Christopher Stern had a sac fly in third to make it 3-0 Eagles.
CWRU took the lead with a four spot in the fourth inning and added eight runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Freshman Jack Moore took the loss in the outing, allowing nine runs (seven ER) in 6.2 innings to go along with five strikeouts.
Emory did not go quietly as the team scored three in the top of the ninth by RBIs from junior Michael Wilson, senior Josh Rosenblatt and freshman Jack Rubenstein to cut it to six.
Grayson paced the offense in the contest with his two runs driven in and a stolen bases while sophomore Richard Brereton tallied three hits including a double for the Eagles.
Game 2: Case Western Reserve 4, Emory 3
The second game on the afternoon was a pitcher's duel as Emory's James Robertson and CWRU's Ben Murphy and Corey Brown kept both offenses in check throughout the contest with the Spartans pulling out the narrow one-run win.
Murphy and Brown combined to allow just two runs over eight innings while Robertson pitched well despite being handed the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and four walks in seven innings of work. He struck out seven in the contest and finished the outing with 120 pitches thrown.
CWRU struck first with a three run second inning but the Eagles answered quickly with two of their own in the top of the third as senior Bubby Terp plated Grayson and freshman Drew Bartholow with a single to center.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of the home team until a solo home run by Rocco Maue, his third of the series, doubled the CWRU lead in the seventh.
Trailing by two entering the ninth, the Eagles again would not go down silently, putting up a fight in the ninth against closer Liam Killingstad. With one out in the inning, the Eagles saw their next three batters reach base with senior Nick Chambers cutting the deficit to one with a RBI single to bring home freshman Michael Edelman. However, Killingstad was able to retire Brereton on a pop up to second before striking out Terp to nail down his fifth save of the season.
Emory and Case Western Reserve will close out their four-game series tomorrow morning with first pitch set for 10:30 AM at Nobby's Ballpark.
