Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Washington & Lee

The Emory University Baseball team salvaged a split during Saturday's doubleheader against Washington & Lee University at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

After falling to the Generals 4-3 in the opener, the Eagles took the rubber match of the series in the night cap of the twinbill, defeating W&L by an 8-6 margin. Emory improves to 4-2 overall with the Saturday split while the Generals head home to Lexington, VA with a 6-3 overall record.

Game 1: Washington & Lee 4, Emory 3

The Eagles brought the game-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to score as the Generals won game one of the afternoon by a one-run margin.

A leadoff walk to junior Jacob Greene followed by a one-out double by classmate Richard Brereton put Emory in prime position to complete the comeback in the team's last at-bat, trailing by two runs. Senior Eric Terry cut the deficit to one with his RBI groundout to plate Greene. However, the W&L closer struck out sophomore Michael Edelman looking to end the ball game.

Terry and Edelman each collected RBIs for the Eagles in the contest with Brereton and freshman Zeke Diamond leading the offense with two hits apiece.

Freshman Joey Bock was saddled with the loss as he allowed three unearned runs to score in the sixth frame. Sophomore Jack Moore started and went five innings, allowing one run on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts. Freshman Bryant Wise tossed three scoreless to close out the game, giving up just one hit and striking out a pair.

Game 2: Emory 8, Washington & Lee 6

Runs in both the seventh and eighth innings helped the Eagles win game two of the doubleheader, as Emory broke a 6-6 ball game to record the win.

In the seventh, sophomore Jack Rubenstein scored the go-ahead run as he scampered home on the 4-6-3 double play off the bat of junior Christopher Stern. An inning later, Brereton tacked on an insurance run with his RBI groundout to score senior Jackson Grayson.

Freshman Jack Brodsky improved to 3-0 to begin his rookie campaign, tossing four innings of relief and surrendering two runs on two hits while striking out four. He retired the final nine batters he faced.

Sophomore Jacob Singer had a game-high three hits as he went 3-for-4. Brereton was one of six Eagles to drive in at least one run, posting a team-high two RBI.
