Baseball Sweeps CWRU on Senior Day; Moves into Sole Possession of First in UAA

The Emory University baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a much needed doubleheader sweep of Case Western Reserve University, clinching the series win over the Spartans.

Prior to the start of the first game on Saturday, the Eagles honored their nine-member senior class of Thomas Baumgartner, Sam Brzowski, Alec Granger, Jackson Grayson, NJ Kim, Brian Taggett, Bubby Terp, Eric Terry and Michael Wilson with a special on-field ceremony.

With the two wins over CWRU and a pair of losses by Washington University to NYU on Saturday, the Eagles moved into sole possession of first place in the UAA thanks to a better winning percentage over the Bears. Emory stands at 7-1 while WashU dropped to 8-2. Following a non-conference title with Oglethorpe on Tuesday, Emory will travel to St. Louis for a key four-game series against WashU beginning Friday.

Game 1 – Emory 13, CWRU 3 – 7 innings

The Eagles scored 13 unanswered runs to pick up their fourth mercy rule victory in conference play. Juniors Richard Brereton and Jacob Greene combined for seven RBI with Terp and sophomore Michael Edelman each adding two runs batted in a piece.

After allowing three runs in the first, sophomore Jack Moore settled in and tossed six shutout frames as he recorded his second complete game victory of the year. He gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two in the outing.

Emory played nine runs across the second and third frames with Brereton collecting two-run base hits in each inning. The Eagles tacked on single runs in both the fifth and sixth before Terp ended the game with a deep two-run double in the seventh, scoring Greene and sophomore Jack Rubenstein with the game-clinching runs.

Game 2 – Emory 10, CWRU 6

Trailing 5-1 through four and half, the Emory offense accounted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Greene and Terry putting the Eagles in front, 6-5.

The Spartans tied the game at sixth in the top of the sixth but the Eagles responded with three in the bottom of the inning on the strength of a CWRU error, wild pitch and a RBI ground out by Terp. Emory added an insurance run in the eighth with another RBI hit by Terp, scoring freshman Zeke Diamond.

Terp finished the contest with a game-high four RBI, going 1-for-4 at the dish. Brereton and Diamond each collected three hits with Diamond scoring a team-high three runs.

Freshman Jack Brodsky was tremendous in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings to record his team-leading sixth win of the season. He scattered three hits, one walk and struck out five.

Next up for the Eagles will be the final non-conference game of the season at Oglethorpe Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
