Emory Baseball Swept in Saturday Doubleheader at No.-16 WashU

The Emory University baseball team was swept by No.-16 ranked Washington University in a Saturday doubleheader at Kelly Field in St. Louis, MO.

With the two victories, the Bears clinched the 2019 University Athletic Association championship over the Eagles by virtue of a higher winning percentage. WashU is now 25-5-1 (11-2 UAA) on the year whereas Emory falls to 19-15 overall and 7-4 in UAA play.

Game 1 – WashU 3, Emory 2

A run-scoring single by Jackson Gray in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference as the Bears took the first game of the double dip by a one-run margin.

After the Eagles had tied the game with a RBI single by sophomore Jack Rubenstein in the top of the eighth, WashU answered with a pair of hits as well as fielder's choice to take the lead off freshman Jack Brodsky in the bottom of the frame.

Rubenstein and junior Richard Brereton combined for six of the team's 10 hits with Rubenstein posting a 3-for-4 line with a double and RBI while Brereton was 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. The Eagles, as a team, left 11 runners on-base.

Sophomore Jack Moore pitched well as he received the no decision, allowing two earned runs in seven innings of work. He gave up three hits, walked four and struck out four.

Game 2 – WashU 7, Emory 2

The Bears' John Brinkman struck for a two-run home run in the first inning and added four more with a four-run fourth as WashU clinched the conference title with a wire-to-wire victory.

After being held scoreless through six frames, the Eagles broke through for two in the seventh with a RBI double by senior Bubby Terp followed by a sac fly by classmate Eric Terry. Emory would only get as close as four runs in the game as the WashU bullpen retired the final seven batters to seal the win.

Terp had two of the Eagles' six hits, recording a pair of doubles, one RBI and a run scored. Brereton added two hits, going 2-for-4 with a run.

Junior James Robertson was dealt the loss, allowing six runs (four ER) on six hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out five. Sophomore Henry Dimlow was solid again in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless, giving up just one hit and walking three.

The series in St. Louis concludes on Sunday with the finale beginning at 1:00 PM EST / 12:00 PM CST.
