2019 Emory Baseball Season Recap

2019 Emory Baseball Season Recap

The Emory University baseball team's 2019 season featured several peaks and valleys over the course of the 39-game schedule but the team was able to secure its nine consecutive and 27th overall 20-win season as the Eagles recorded a 20-19 overall record.

After beginning the season with six victories in their first eight games, the Eagles dropped eight of their next nine as they headed into the first University Athletic Association series with a record of 7-10. The bats awoken in the series against the Brandeis University Judges and stayed red-hot through the first half of April as the team averaged 10.6 runs per game, posting a record of 12-2 during the stretch.

The hot streak capitulated Emory to first place atop the conference standings with a 7-1 record and set up a winner-take-all championship series with the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis. The Bears stellar pitching was able to silence the Emory offense across the four-game series as WashU captured the conference crown. The Eagles closed out the regular season the following weekend, taking one game from NYU to finish the season above the .500 mark.

Three Eagles were chosen to the All-UAA team for their fine showings during the season with junior Richard Brereton and freshman Zeke Diamond leading the charge with First Team selections. Brereton made his second straight All-UAA First Team after registering team-highs in batting average (.392), hits (56), RBI (30), stolen bases (18), multi-hit games while adding a 3-1 record in eight games (7 GS) on the mound, pitching to a 3.66 ERA in 39.1 innings with 30 strikeouts.

Diamond made an immediate impact at the top of the lineup during his first season as an Eagles, starting 37 of 38 games and batting .358 as he ranked second on the team with 49 hits. He totaled a team-high 38 runs scored with three doubles, a team-high three triples, 21 RBI and ranked second with 19 walks and 15 stolen bases.

Junior Ryan Adelman joined the duo on the All-UAA team as he was picked to the Second Team for the first time in his career. Adelman turned in career-highs across the board in games played (39), runs scored (38), hits (49), doubles (12), RBI (15), walks (21), stolen bases (10) and a slash line of .371/.478/.485 while also leading the team in runs scored, doubles, walks, on-base percentage and sacrifice hits.

Freshmen relievers Jack Brodsky and Joey Bock emerged as key pieces to the Eagles bullpen as the pairing combined to earn 10 of the team's 20 wins. Brereton and sophomore Jack Moore each added three victories on the mound with Moore posting team-highs in innings pitched (58.2) and strikeouts (43). Freshman Bryant Wise and senior Brian Taggett led the team in ERA, recording sub-3.00 marks with Wise topping the squad with a 2.76 ERA in 11 appearances including five starts.

Head Coach Mike Twardoski, in his 20th season at the helm of the program, posted his 19th winning record and 19th season with at least 20 wins, as he inched closer to the 600-win mark, upping his career record with the Eagles to 581-287-1.
