Members of Emory Baseball Representing Great Britain at European Baseball Championships

Current and former members of the Emory University baseball program Richard Brereton, Ethan Solomon and Mathew Troupe are currently representing Great Britain in the European Baseball Championship in Bonn and Solingen, Germany from September 7th through the 15th.

Alongside Great Britain, other countries competing at Euros are the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Israel, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Croatia and Austria. The top-five team finishers at Euros will advance to the European-African Olympic qualifier for Tokyo 2020, held in Italy from September 18th-22nd.

Current senior Brereton and former Eagle Solomon (1998-02 and assistant coach with the team following his playing career) are members of the national team roster while Troupe serves as the team's pitching coach. Troupe, a former standout with the University of Arizona, was the Eagles pitching coach for one season during Brereton's freshman year.

As of September 9th, Great Britain is 1-1 in group play with a 4-3 extra innings win over the Czech Republic. GBR still has Sweden and Israel remaining on the docket as well as the completion of its game against the Netherlands where the Dutch lead 10-2 in the ninth. If Great Britain is able to advance past the group stage, the quarterfinal round would start on September 13th.

Solomon drew starter responsibility in the opener against the Dutch, spinning five innings on the mound and allowing four runs on eight hits. Brereton has been impressive at the plate, starting in LF for the team. He was also called upon in relief in the ninth inning of a tied game with the Czech and ended up earning the win as the Lions took the lead in the 10th.
