Former Baseball Standout Richard Brereton Signs Free Agent Contract with Chicago Cubs

Former Emory University baseball student-athlete Richard Brereton will continue his career professionally after signing a contract with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. He signed as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of this year's MLB Draft.

Brereton played for the Eagles from 2017 through 2020, helping the Eagles to four winning seasons, two second place finishes in the UAA and a NCAA Regional appearance in 2017. He was a two-time UAA First Team selection, a D3Baseball.com All-South Region Third Team honoree in 2018 and was named the UAA Rookie of the Year.

The two-way standout compiled a .349 career average with the Eagles, racking up 126 hits including 25 doubles, five triples, three home runs and had a .420 on-base percentage and .471 slugging percentage. He drove in 67 runs, scored 82 times and was 44-for-52 in stolen base attempts. On the mound, Brereton went 14-6 with one save in 36 appearances, making 22 starts. He had a 3.13 earned run average with 131 strikeouts in 152.1 innings while holding opponents to a .234 average.

The Darien, CT native rounded out his collegiate career playing for Duke University as a graduate student during the 2021 season. In his lone season with the Blue Devils, Brereton put together a 7.02 ERA and a 1-0 record in 12 appearances and two starts. He allowed 13 runs on 23 hits and 10 walks while striking out 25 batters in 16.2 innings pitched.
