Five-Run Ninth Leads Emory Baseball Past Covenant, 10-5, in Series Opener

The Emory University baseball team used a five-run ninth to capture a 10-5 victory against Covenant College in the first of a three game series with the opener played on Lookout Mountain.

The first four batters in the ninth reached base and came around to score as senior Robby Wacker and sophomore Tyler McLoughlin both connected on two-run home runs to power the Eagles to the win. Following the offensive outburst, junior Aaron Mishoulam shut the door in the bottom half of the inning with a 1-2-3 outing with a pair of strikeouts.

All nine members of the Emory lineup recorded at least one hit as the Eagles reached double digits in the run column for the second consecutive game top open the season. Junior Henry Pelinski and sophomore Steven Hunt joined Wacker and McLoughlin with four baggers on the afternoon as Emory hit four home runs. Wacker, McLoughlin and Hunt each had two RBI with senior Zeke Diamond added a two RBI output, going 2-for-5.

Senior Joey Bock went five innings in his first start of the year, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven with his only blemish coming in the second inning as he gave up a two-run shot to the Scots' Kenny Mills.

Back-to-back two run frames in the fourth and fifth innings gave the Eagles a three-run cushion but Covenant chipped back with two in the sixth before a round tripper by Harrison Adelgren off of Kyle Sulkowski tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth.

The Eagles, now 2-0 on the young season, return to Atlanta to complete the three game set with the Scots on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM at Chappell Park.
