Chappell Park

Chappell Park
Home of the Emory Eagles Baseball Team

Overview

Chappell Park, located on the Emory University campus, has been home to the Emory Eagles' Baseball Team since the 1995 season.

Features and Amenities

Chappell Park was built with state-of-the-art drainage and irrigation systems.  The infield is 80 percent sand for maximum drainage of water which allows the field to be ready for play within an hour after a major rainstorm.  Underground sprinklers in the infield and outfield are set on timers which ensure that the field retains proper moisture. Other amenities at Chappell Park include an inning-by-inning scoreboard, sunken dugouts, a locker room, batting cages, press box, VIP lounge, permanent seating for 250 spectators and temporary seating for approximately 1,000 spectators.  Chappell Park was built at a cost of approximately $1.1 million.

History

Chappell Park was provided by the generosity of Mr. Robert Chappell, Jr., a 1956 graduate of Emory's Oxford University, a 1958 graduate of Emory University, and a 1968 graduate of Emory's MBA program.  The park honors the Chappell family's interest in Emory baseball.  Brett Chappell, a 1987 Emory graduate, was a founding member of the school's club baseball team in 1985.  Ted Chappell, a 1993 Emory graduate, was a member of Emory's first varsity baseball team in 1991.  Brett and Ted are the sons of Robert Chappell, Jr. The groundbreaking ceremony for Chappell Park was on May 13, 1994.

The deication ceremony for Chappell Park was on March 25, 1995. Following the dedication , Emory beat the Savannah College of Art & Design, 12-0, highlighted by the first grand slam ever at the park, a homerun by Emory freshman shortstop Brad Wands of Satellite Beach, Fla.

On February 14, 2004, the batting cages were dedicated to Clyde "Doc" Partin Sr., the former Emory professor, coach and athletic director. A sign on the batting cages reads:

"Emory University is proud to have these batting cages dedicated to Clyde Partin Sr. on this date, February 14, 2004. They serve as a reminder of the spirit of Emory University which he epitomizes, and its baseball program."
