Emory Golf Earns Berth To NCAA D-III Championships

Emory Golf Earns Berth To NCAA D-III Championships

The No. 3-ranked Emory University golf team has been selected to compete in the 2017 NCAA Division III Golf Championships.  The Eagles are one of 42 squads vying for the team title that will be played May 16-19 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.  Serving as the hosts will be Oglethorpe University and the Central Florida Sports Commission.

Emory, along with fellow University Athletic Association member Carnegie Mellon, received the two Pool B bids, consisting of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.  A total of 33 conferences were awarded automatic nods while seven berths were reserved for Pool C - schools from automatic qualifying conferences that are not conference champs and any remaining Pool B teams.  In addition, five individuals from non-qualifying teams were chosen to participate bringing the field to 215 players.

The 72-hole Championships will be played both on the 6,844-yard, par-72 El Campeon and the 6,888-yard, par-72 Las Colinas Courses. After a 36-hole cut that slices the field to 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams, the final two rounds will be conducted on the El Campeon Course

Emory will be making its 20th overall in the 32-year history of the program and the fourth during the six-year tenure of head coach John Sjoberg.

All of the top 15 and 17 of the 20 top-ranked teams will be in the hunt for this year's national crown.  Huntingdon College holds down the No. 1 spot in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches' Poll while UT-Tyler stands in the No. 2 spot.  After Emory, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Methodist round out the top five, respectively.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps enters this year's Championships looking to defend its title after posting a six-shot advantage over runner-up Huntingdon College.
