2020-21 Emory Men's Golf Recap

2020-21 Emory Men's Golf Recap

With the challenges of the COVID 19 pandemic still facing college athletics during the 2020-21 season, the Emory men's golf team emerged during the spring portion of its schedule to register a number of impressive team and individual accomplishments.

Following the cancellation of the remainder of its 2020 spring season, the Eagles faced further obstacles when in July of 2020, the University announced that it was cancelling all fall intercollegiate competitions as well as all athletic-related actitivites for all programs. Eventually, a light at the end of tunnel took place when teams were allowed to practice in February, which led to the Unversity announcing that traditional team sports would resume in March.

Through all of that upheaval and uncertainty of 2020-21, Emory men's golf played in five tournaments and posted four top-five finishes.  In addition, the Eagles of Head Coach John Sjoberg made the program's fifth straight appearance in the NCAA D-III Championships where it posted a sixth-place finish, the school's 11th-ever top-10 ten finish.  Emory averaged 295.6 strokes over 14 rounds of competition, with individual players logging a total of 15 rounds of par or better.

Emory's return to action came at the Hampden-Sydney Tiger Invitational (Mar 13-14) where it claimed fifth place out of 14 schools.  Junior Max Schwarz highlighted the squad's efforts by tying for medalist honors in the 70-player field with a brilliant mark of seven-under 137, tying the school record for low score for a two-round tournament.

Emory followed the Tiger Invitational with a solid outing at the Jekyll Island Invitational (Mar. 19-21), placing third out of 25 teams with a 54-hole score of 880, which included an opening round of 285 that represented the Eagles' top showing for the season. Emory boasted a pair of top-10 finishers at Jekyll Island with Schwarz tying for second out of 133 players with a four-under 212, the school's second-best individual score score at that tournament, and junior Logan Ryan whose over over par 217 tied for seventh on the leader board.

After a third-place finish out of 12 teams at the prestigious Golfweek DIII Invitational (Apr. 2-4), Emory capped off the regular season by coming in fourth out of 15 schools at the Wynlakes Intercollegiate (Apr. 12-13) with senior Davis Hingtgen topping the Eagles' contingent with a one-under par 143 that slotted him ninth on the 72-player leader board.

The NCAA Championships were conducted on the Palmer and Jones Courses at the Oglebay Resort Course in Wheeling, West Virginia.  Out of the 43 teams that started out Emory registered a sixth-place finish, highlighted by a third-round score of 290 that represented the program's third-best score ever at nationals.  Hingtgen closed out the Championships first on the team and tied for 23rd overall (191 players started out) with a 72-hole effort of 297.

Max Schwarz and Davis Hingtgen, were lauded with PING All-America recognition. Schwarz earned a first-team berth, Emory's first-such honoree since 2012 (Ryan Dagerman), after pacing the team in scoring average with a mark of 72.6 strokes over 14 rounds.  He recorded a pair of top-five finishes over the Eagles' five tournaments and ranked as the team's top finisher on two occasions.  The owner of a team-leading six rounds of par or better, Schwarz was named the UAA Golfer of the Week twice.  Hingtgen garnered an honorable-mention spot on the All-America Team after logging a showing of 74.4 strokes over his 14 rounds.  No. 2 on the club with four rounds of par or better, Davis paced the Eagles and tied for 23rd overall out of the 191 players who originally started out at the NCAA D-III Championships.

In addition to their All-America berths,  Schwarz and Hingtgen both landed on the All-University Athletic Assoication Team.  Joining the pair as an all-league choice was Logan Ryan, who closed out the year second on the Eagle's scoresheet in scoring average (74.2 spr).  Ryan was Emory's top performer and was second overall out of 60 players at the Golfweek DIII Invitational with a 54-hole score of one-over par 217.
