Freshman Matt Davet led six double-figure scorers with 17 points in helping the Emory men's basketball team to a shootout win at Berry College Tuesday evening. The Eagles upped their record to 2-0 following a 109-103 decision over the Vikings who slipped to 1-2.

Playing without starters Whit Rapp and Adam Gigax, Emory hit on 53.5 percent (38 of 71) of its field goal opportunities, including 44.8 percent (13 of 29) from three-point range. Berry closed out the evening shooting an even 50 percent (38 of 76) from the floor and knocked down 48.3 percent (14 of 29) from distance.  Free throw shooting proved to be a key factor with the Eagles successful on 20 of 26 from the stripe compared to the Vikings 13-of-22 effort.

Davet sank six of his seven field goal tries, including all four from beyond the arc, along with one free throw to account for his point total.  Junior Beau Bommarito chalked up a career-best 15 points, 12 coming in the second half, while freshmen Romin Williams and Clay Washburn along with senior Christopher Avant all contributed 14 points to the cause.  Williams and Washburn combined to go seven-of-12 from distance while Avant hit five-of-nine field goal tries and all four from the free throw line.  Avant also topped the squad with seven rebounds.  Freshman Lawrence Rowley rounded out the double-digit producers with 13 points.

After Berry cut a nine-point halftime obstacle to three points early in the second half, a 16-4 Eagle blitz, which saw five different players score in that run including a three pointer by Davet, stretched Emory's advantage to 75-60 with 13:02 on the clock.  Washburn nailed back-to-back three pointers that kept Emory comfortably ahead, 85-69, and a dunk by junior Gebereal Baitey gave the Eagles an 87-73 cushion with 9:21 remaining. The Vikings countered with a 13-5 run, cutting Emory's lead to 92-86 with 6:42 left, but a 7-2 spurt by Emory, finished off by a Davet layup, pushed its lead to 11 points with 4:44 on the clock. Berry scrapped back with an 11-4 run to draw to within four points with 80 ticks on the clock but the Eagles held off the comeback bid, using three Williams' free throws and a key tip in by Bommarito with 17 seconds left in sealing the win.

With both teams scoring at a fast clip, the Eagles took a 54-45 edge into the locker room at the break.  Emory was successful on 54.2 percent (19 of 35) of its field goal attempts, including 47.1 percent (8 of 17) from three-point range.  The Vikings connected on 48.6 percent (18 of 37) from the floor and knocked down four treys in nine attempts. Davet led the Emory scoring effort over the opening 20 minutes of action with 12 points, hitting all four of his field goal opportunities, including three-of-three from beyond the arc.  Rowley totaled eight first-half points while classmates Nick Stuck, Williams and Washburn all chipped in six points.  Stuck converted all three of his field goal attempts while Washburn and Williams each sank two three pointers.  Emory's freshman class accounted for seven of the team's eight first-half triples.  Trailing by a 17-12 margin, Emory rattled off 10 straight points, capped by a Davet drive to the rim, to claim a 22-17 edge. After a Vikings' bucket cut their deficit to one point, Emory posted an 8-0 charge, the final four points coming from Stuck, to claim a 33-24 cushion with 7:34 remaining.  After a Berry bucket, Emory scored eight of the next 10 points to take its largest lead of the half at 41-28.   

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 25) when it plays at LaGrange College.
