Freshman Romin Williams and junior Gebereal Baitey combined for 39 points in helping the Emory men's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win over Maryville College at LaGrange College's Lee Richter Classic.  The Eagles upped their record to 3-1 following a 102-92 decision over the Scots who slipped to 2-3.

Williams closed out the day with a game-high 23 points, hitting eight-of-14 field goal attempts, including five-of-10 treys, in registering his third double-figure scoring effort of the year. Williams also posted game highs with nine rebounds and eight assists. Baitey added a season-high 16 points, sinking five field goals in eight attempts along with all five of his free throws. He also topped all players with four steals. Senior Adam Gigax and freshman Matt Davett rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. 

After Maryville had whittled down a 13-point halftime deficit to seven early in the second half, Emory used a 15-4 burst, started with a Williams' triple and fueled by five points from Davet to bolt to a 71-53 advantage with 13:05 remaining in the contest. The Scots stayed within striking distance, using a 7-2 run to cut Emory's advantage to 13 points, but with senior Donald Avant scoring four points and Gigax hitting a jumper, the Eagles still maintained a 14-point edge with 8:27 on the clock. A subsequent 10-3 run by Maryville cut Emory's lead to seven points, but the Eagles kept the Scots at bay by registering 14 of the game's next 20 points, the last five coming on a shot-clock beating basket by Christopher Avant followed by a Gigax three pointer to take a commanding 96-81 lead with 2:05 on the clock.

Emory shot 52.2 percent (36-69) from the field and 40 percent (12-30) from beyond the arc.  Maryville was successful on 53.6 percent (30-56) from the floor and sank 10 triples in 23 opportunities.  The Scots shot 33 free throws, making 22, compared to the Eagles' 18-of-22 effort from the stripe. Emory closed out the contest with a 39-27 margin on the glass.

Emory raced to a 52-39 halftime lead, shooting 52.6 percent (20-38) from the floor, including 42.1 percent (8-19) from three-point range. Williams peppered the Scots for 16 points during the opening 20 minutes, sinking six field goals in 10 tries, including four triples in seven opportunities.  Baitey added 10 points while freshman Nick Stuck and Davet each chipped in six points.  Maryville was successful on 52 percent (13-25) from the floor but was hampered by 11 turnovers that Emory parlayed into 18 points.  The Eagles got out of the blocks quickly hitting eight-of-14 field goals, including four treys in seven opportunities, in staking themselves to a 24-8 lead with 12:32 remaining in the half, with Williams contributing eight points in that stretch. Maryville battled back to within six points with 3:10 on the clock, but buckets by Stuck and Gigax, followed by a trey by Baitey closed out final 2:36 of the frame to give Emory its 13-point cushion.

Emory returns to action on Wednesday (Nov. 29) when it hosts Birmingham Southern in a 7:00 pm start.
