Sophomore Romin Williams buried a three-point field goal just as time expired, giving the Emory men's basketball team a Saturday afternoon overtime win over Maryville College in the Eagles' Thanksgiving Classic.  No. 18 Emory raised its overall record to 4-0 following the wild 96-93 decision over the Scots who fell to 0-3.

Williams, who paced the Emory scoring attack with 26 points, ended the game eight-of-19 from the floor, including six-of-13 from distance, while sinking four free throws in five attempts.  Sophomore Matt Davet came off the bench to add 19 points, while tying teammates Matt Schner and Lawrence Rowley for game honors with nine boards.  Schner, along with senior Gebereal Baitey tallied 13 points, while Rowley finished with 10 points, hitting five-of-seven field goal attempts.

Holding a six-point lead early in the second half, the Eagles built their cushion to 52-41, after a triple by Williams followed by a bucket by Davet, with 16:59 left in the game.  The Scots responded with a 13-6 spurt, the first eight points coming by Calvin Songster, to narrow the deficit to four points.  The Eagles then accounted for eight of the game's next 11 points, with Schner and Baitey knocked down triples, to push ahead by a 66-57 count with 11:13 on the clock.  Maryville stayed within striking distance and eventually knotted the score at 69-69 with 6:44 remaining after Songster banked an improbable three-pointer.  Songster ended the contest leading all players with 38 points, converting 13 field goals in 18 tries, including seven-of-11 from distance. After an empty Emory possession another bomb by Songster gave Maryville its first lead of the day, 72-69, with 6:10 left. Baitey scored all five of a 5-1 Emory spurt that put it ahead 76-75, and when Schner scored on a layup, the Eagles held a 78-75 advantage with 1:39 remaining.  A pair of makes by Williams at the stripe gave the Eagles an 80-77 edge with eight ticks on the clock, but the Scots Dante Hoppa stunned the Woodruff PE Center crowd by sending the game into overtime with two seconds left after he  dialed up a three-pointer from about 25 feet out.

A three-pointer by Williams to start the extra session, followed by a three-point play by Davet, helped key an 8-2 Emory start, propelling it to an 88-82 lead.  The Scots answered with a 7-2 run that cut their deficit to one point, but a clutch put-back by Schner enabled Emory to claim a 92-89 lead.  After a bucket by Maryville's Joshua Brooks cut the Eagles' edge to one, Emory made one-of-two from the stripe, putting the score at 93-91 in its favor with 11 ticks left.  However, Brooks muscled his way into the lane and hit a shot over the outstretched arms of a pair of Emory defenders to knot the score with four seconds on the clock.  After an Emory timeout, Williams shook a Maryville defender and took the inbounds pass from Davet where he raced up court before launching his game winner from about 28 feet out.

Maryville held an edge in field goal shooting, hitting 47.3 percent (35-of-74) to Emory's 46.8 percent (37-of-79), and was successful on 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from three-point range while the Eagles converted 34.4 percent (11-of-32).  Emory wrapped up the barn burner with a 48-35 cushion in rebounding, 19-12 on the offensive that helped generate a 22-7 advantage in second-chance points.

With Williams scoring 14 points and senior Beau Bommarito seven, Emory went into the locker room at halftime leading by a 43-34 margin.  A 10-0 blitz that saw Williams and Bommarito hit triples allowed the Eagles to lay claim to a 15-5 lead. After a bucket by MC's Brooks, Williams accounted for all of Emory's scoring during an 8-0 run over a 1:48 stretch, extending its margin to 16 points at 23-7, with 12:30 left in the stanza.  The Eagles would lead by as many as 19 points, 33-14, following a basket by sophomore Nick Stuck with 8:24 left in the frame, but the Scots battled back to within nine with Songster hitting a bucket with one minute left that closed out the scoring for the half.

Emory closes out the Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday with a 2:00 pm battle against Randolph-Macon (6-0).
