Sophomore Matt Davet led three double-figure scorers with 20 points as the Emory men's basketball team posted a Saturday afternoon win at home over Oswego State. The Eagles won for the fourth straight time and raised their record to 8-2 following a 91-73 decision over the Lakers who suffered their first defeat in 10 outings.
Davet totaled 12 second-half points and finished the contest shooting seven-of-13 from the floor, including a season-high tying four-of-nine from beyond the arc, en route to registering his fourth straight and ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season. Sophomore Matt Schner dialed up his seventh double-figure effort of the year, racking up 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from floor, while classmate Clay Washburn, making his first appearance of the season, chipped in 15 points, knocking down five field goals in six opportunities including all three of his triple tries. Davet's and Washburn's combined 35 points helped Emory post a decided 52-13 advantage in bench scoring. Sophomore Nick Stuck directed the offensive attack to the tune of eight assists with his play a key role in the Eagles turning the ball over a season-low six times
Emory shot 45.2 percent (33-of-73) from the floor compared to the Lakers' 35 percent (21-of-60), the best defensive field goal percentage showing by the Eagles this year. Oswego converted 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc vs. 31.3 percent for Emory, but the Eagles finished with a 43-38 edge on the glass, 16-12 on the offensive end that helped generate a 22-12 edge in second-chance points.
With the game tied 13-13 early in the game, Emory held Oswego scoreless for over six minutes while rattling off a 15-1 blitz, capped by a three-pointer by Davet, to take a 28-14 lead with 6:32 left in the stanza. The Lakers missed eight straight field goals during that stretch and turned the ball over on four occasions. After an Oswego trey ended its dry spell, Emory scored 10 of the game's next 12 points, highlighted by a pair of Washburn three-pointers, to race to a 38-19 cushion. Emory would go into the locker room at the break ahead by a 41-24 count as Washburn and Davet scored 10 and eight points, respectively. The 17-point lead marked the fourth straight and sixth contest this season that the Eagles built a double-figure lead through the first 20 minutes of action.
With sophomore Lawrence Rowley and Davet combining to score 13 of the Eagles' opening 15 points to start the second half, Emory assumed a 56-33 lead with 16:19 remaining in the game. Emory still maintained a 20-point moat, 62-42, following a bucket by senior Gebereal Baitey, with 13:25 on the clock, but the Lakers clawed back to with nine points with 8:52 left as a result of a 17-6 spurt, capped by a three point by Quinn Carey. However, Emory quickly regained control of the game with a 9-0 run, courtesy of three treys over a 66-second span, the first coming from Davet, then followed by back-to-back triples by Schner. From that point, the closest Oswego would get would be 16 points.
All 14 Emory players saw action with 11 finding their way into the scoring column.
Emory returns to action on Sunday when it closes out the Holiday Classic as well as a five-game home stand with a 4:00 pm contest against East Texas Baptist.
