Emory Men's Basketball Races By Carnegie Mellon

Sophomore Matt Schner led five double-figure scorers with a career-high 30 points in leading  the Emory men's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win at home over Carnegie Mellon University. The Eagles boosted their record to 12-4, 3-2 in the University Athletic Association, following a 116-100 triumph over the Tartans who fell to 8-8 in overall play, 3-2 in the league.  Emory's 116 points tied the program's single-game scoring record set earlier this year against Trinity University (Dec. 1).

Schner had a monster game, knocking down 13-of-15 field goal attempts, including all four of his three-point field goals, in pocketing his 11th double-figure scoring performance of the season and second-highest individual total by an Eagle this year. Sophomore Romin Williams tallied 23 points, his sixth outing of 20 or more points, hitting eight-of-17 from the floor and four-of-four from the stripe. Senior Gebereal Baitey came through with 16 points, converting six field goals in 10 tries, including a career-best four treys. Sophomore Clay Washburn and Matt Davet came off the bench to round out the team's double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Emory used a relentless offensive attack during the opening 20 minutes of action, shooting a blistering 61.4 percent (27-of-44) from the floor, including 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from beyond the arc in bolting to a 68-42 lead at the break.  With four different players scoring, the Eagles accounted for the game's first nine points and never looked back.  Emory was successful on 12 of its first 17 field goal opportunities (six treys), compared to CMU's 29.4 percent (5-of-17) in claiming a 30-14 advantage with 12:10 left in the opening stanza.  Emory still maintained a 15-point cushion before using a 14-4 spurt, with Schner scoring five points in that stretch, to push its lead to 53-28 with 5:13 left.  Schner picked up 21 points, hitting nine-of-10 from the floor (3-of-3 from distance) while Williams dialed up 14 points to pace the Emory attack.  The 68 points represented the highest total in a half turned in by a Jason Zimmerman-coached team

Emory ended the contest shooting 52.9 percent (27-of-44) from the floor and its 15 makes from distance represented the eighth time this year it posted double figures in that department.  Six different Eagles recorded a three-point field while 12 of the 14 players who saw action found their way into the scoring column.  Carnegie Mellon also connected on 52.9 percent (37-of-70) from the floor and was led in scoring by Seth Henry with 22 points.  The Tartans finished with a slight 41-38 edge in rebounding with Schner pacing Emory with nine caroms.  The Eagles turned the ball over a season-low five times, compared to CMU's 15 miscues, leading to an -18-4 edge in the points-off-turnover category.  With sophomore Nick Stuck doling out eight and Williams seven, Emory totaled 27 assists, its second-highest showing of the season and tying the school's sixth-highest single-game total.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 25) when it hosts Brandeis University in an 8:00 pm start.
