Emory Men's Basketball Defeats NYU - Runs Win Streak To Four Games

Sophomore Romin Williams paced five double-figure scorers with 23 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win at home over New York University.  The Eagles won for the fourth straight time and raised their overall record to 14-4, 5-2 in the University Athletic Association, following a 97-75 triumph over the Violets who fell to 6-12 in overall action, 0-7 in the conference

Williams, who tallied 14 second-half points, ended the contest eight-of-13 from the floor, including three-of-eight from three-point range, and converted four free throws in five attempts in notching his 16th double-figure performance of the season and seventh of 20 or more points.  Sophomores Lawrence Rowley and Matt Schner each rang up 17 points, with Schner tying for game honors with eight rebounds, while classmates Matt Davet and Clay Washburn rounded out the team's double-digit producers with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

With the scored tied early in the game, a 16-2 Emory barrage, which saw Davet score six and Williams five, boosted the Eagles to a 20-6 advantage with 11:54 left in the first half.  The Violets regrouped and countered with 10 unanswered points, eight coming from Dom Cristiano, to narrow the gap to four points with 9:35 on the clock.  Cristiano would go onto to lead all players with 37 points.  After a bucket by Cristiano narrowed an Emory advantage to eight points, the Eagles closed out the final 5:35 on the stanza on a 15-5 spurt that allowed them to take a 45-27 edge into halftime.  Schner accounted for eight of the 15 points en route to picking up 10 during the opening 20 minutes of play.

NYU stayed within striking distance during the opening minutes of the second half and trailed by 13 points before a triple by Davet followed by back-to-back treys by Washburn sparked an 11-2 run that increased Emory's cushion to 22 points, 65-43, with 12:09 left.  The Violets scrapped back to within 14 points after a basket by Cristiano with 8:18 on the clock, but the Eagles sealed the outcome by accounting for 11 of the games next 13 points, five coming from Williams, to lay claim to an 81-58 margin with 6:43 left.

Emory ended the game shooting 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the floor while NYU checked in at 40.3 percent (27-of-67).   The Eagles were efficient from three-point range, converting 41.4 percent (12-of-29) while the Violets struggled at 15.4 percent (2-of-13).  NYU finished with a 40-36 edge in rebounding with Cristiano and Riley Demps grabbing eight boards each, but the Violets turned the ball over 18 times to Emory's 13 miscues which helped the Eagles to a 26-18 edge in the points-off-turnovers category.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 1) when it plays at Brandeis.
