The junior duo of Matthew Schner and Matt Davet each scored 19 points in leading the No. 6-ranked Emory men's basketball team to a Saturday afternoon win over cross town foe Oglethorpe University. The Eagles boosted their record to 4-0 following an 84-60 decision over the Stormy Petrels who fell to 2-2.
Davet connected on seven-of-15 field goal attempts, including three triples, in registering his fourth double-figure effort of the campaign. Schner knocked down four treys in six attempts, and closed out the game five-of-10 overall from the floor while also dishing out a team-high five assists. Junior Romin Williams closed out Emory's double-digit scorers with 12 points.
The Eagles hit 47 percent (31-of-66) from field, which included 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from beyond the arc. Emory's 11 three-pointers represented the third time the squad had posted 10 or more triples in a game this season. The Stormy Petrels struggled with their shooting, converting just 27.7 percent (18-of-65) of their floor attempts while finding the mark on just five-of-33 three-point opportunities. Emory finished with a 46-35 advantage in rebounding with junior Lawrence Rowley topping the club with 11 boards.
The opening half saw the teams battle back-and-forth for the opening 12 minutes with Oglethorpe leading by a 20-18 count. However, the Eagles took charge from that point, closing out the final 8:03 of the stanza on a 21-6 burst, started with an 11-0 burst that saw Lawrence Rowley score four points and Davet knock down a three. After an Oglethorpe bucket, Emory accounted for 10 of the next 15 points over the final 2:54, highlighted by a three-point play by freshman Max Fried and another Davet three-pointer that put the Eagles up at the break, 39-26.
Three-pointers by Schner and Romin Williams helped the Eagles build a 17-point cushion at 49-32 with 16:04 left in the second half, and bucket by Rowely with 14:24 on the clock allowed Emory to maintain that point advantage. The Stormy Petrels did manage to draw to within 11 with 11:02 remaining, but a Schner trey followed later by a Williams triple and a bucket by sophomore Mason Johnson boosted the Eagles back to a 64-47 bulge with 6:30 left.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 26) when it closes out a three-game home stand with a 7:00 pm match-up against Covenant College.
