Gebereal Baitey Featured in UAA Conversation About Race and Racism Series

Gebereal Baitey competed for the Emory men's basketball team from 2015-16 through 2018-19, appearing in 105 games and drawing 54 starting assignments.  When he wrapped up his collegiate career, he ranked 11th on the Emory all-time chart with 191 assists and was 17th with 113 steals.  The owner of 37 career double-figure scoring performances, his total of 2,188 minutes placed him 16th in school history.

As a senior, he started all 26 Emory contests and averaged a team-high 29.5 minutes per outing.  He stood 24th among University Athletic Association players in overall scoring average (9.8 ppg) and was eighth on the conference chart with an average of 1.2 steals per game.  The previous campaign he helped the squad to an overall record of 23-5 and a spot in the NCAA D-III Tournament Round of 16, starting all 28 games and finishing among the top 20 in the UAA in scoring average (11.0 ppg). In addition,he doled out an average of 2.8 assists per game, 12th among league leaders, and led the Eagles in steals (43).

During his tenure with the program, Emory basketball won 82 games, made four NCAA Tournament appearances and captured two UAA titles.

In February of 2021, Gebereal returned to the program when he was named assistant coach.

The UAA "Conversations About Race and Racism" series seeks to lift the voices of people of color and recognize the challenges faced in both athletics and academics at the collegiate level. By sharing personal stories, we hope to elevate the conversation about race to raise awareness and bring about change.
