Emory Men's Basketball Begins Season with Road Victory at Piedmont

The No. 13 ranked Emory University men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season in winning fashion Thursday night, taking down Piedmont University by 14 points on the road in Demorest, GA.

Freshman Cale Martens was one of three Eagles in double figures, producing a team-high 18 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Senior duo Matthew Schner and Nick Stuck joined Martens in double digits with Schner pouring in 17 and Stuck netting 13. Martens added seven rebounds, tying with junior Mason Johnson for the team lead.

The Eagles shot 43.9-percent from the field on the night (29-for-66) including 33.3-percent from long range (10-for-30). The Lions went 27-for-59 from the floor (45.8%) but were just 5-for-16 from beyond the arc.

Schner and fellow senior Romin Williams each had seven points in the opening half as the Eagles went into the locker room 33-26 at the break. Piedmont cut the lead down to as many as three at 50-47 before Emory went in cruise control, surging ahead by as many as 20 en route to the win. Martens, Schner and Stuck all scored 10 or more points across the final 20 minutes, led by Marten's 12, helping earn the season opening victory.

The Eagles will be off until November 19th and 20th when they will take on No. 1 ranked Randolph-Macon and Wabash in the Great Lakes Invitational in Marietta, OH.
