The Emory University men's basketball team put on a show in Sewanee, TN on Monday night defeating the Sewanee Tigers 101-76.
The Eagles (2-0) cruised to a 25-point victory over the Tigers (1-3) on Sunday evening bringing their average margin of victory this season to 21.5 points. The Eagles were a well-rounded machine tonight with six players scoring in double figures. Freshman Benjamin Pearce led Emory in scoring with 17 points on 50% shooting from the field while also contributing a team-high six assists and four steals. Sophomore Albert Fallas and senior Mason Johnson matched each other, scoring 15 apiece with Johnson serving as a pivotal defensive piece notching a team-high three blocks. In sophomore Logan Shanahan's first game of the season he poured in a cool 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting in just 13 minutes. Sophomore Cale Martens recorded the first double-double of the season for the Eagles scoring ten points and ripping down 13 rebounds.
The Eagles bruised the Tigers throughout the game winning the rebounding battle 49-35 as well as the stocks (steals + blocks) war by four. Emory's bench played an integral role in the win as well, scoring the Tigers bench 42 to 12. The Eagles cleaned up their free throw shooting woes from opening night shooting a solid 75% (6-8) from the line in this contest.
The game began with a quick, personal 5-0 run from Martens including a triple in the first five seconds of action that set the tone for what was a fast paced game all night. The Eagles weren't able to generate any real separation until a steal and a fastbreak dunk from freshman Jair Knight ignited a 7-0 run from Emory that put them in the lead 20-13. The fast pace of play saw the Eagles put up 53 points in the first half, leading over the Tigers 53-43 heading into the halftime break.
An early three from the Tigers in the second half would cut the Eagles lead to nine but that would be the closest Sewanee would get for the remainder of the game. A 16-2 run in the middle of the second half would blow the game wide open as it put Emory up 73-50 and they wouldn't look back from there taking the contest 101-76 marking the first time the Eagles have crossed the 100 point threshold since a 104-82 takedown of NYU on January 30th, 2022.
The Eagles are back in action this weekend when they play host to the Guilford Quakers at 1:00 PM on Saturday in the Woodruff PE Center.
