2002 Emory Men's Soccer Headline Archive

(Dec. 16) Matthew Levine of Emory University finished among the national scoring leaders for NCAA Division III.

Levine is 18th in the nation in points per game in the final NCAA statisticial report. He is 28th in goals per game.

Last season, Levine led Emory with 16 goals and 41 points in 18 games.


(Dec. 15) Emory University has been honored with a Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Emory has received this award. The award is presented to those teams with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages for the past school year.

Emory had the second-highest GPA, 3.43, in the nation among all honorees from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, and NAIA schools.


(Dec. 8) Emory University Matthew Levine has been named to the All-Region team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Levine, a junior, was voted to the second team. He was a third-team selection last year.

Levine led the Eagles in scoring with 41 points (16 goals, 9 assists) in 18 games. He enters his senior season in eighth place on the school's all-time list for career points, 15 away from becoming the fifth Eagle ever to reach the 100-point plateau.


(Nov. 21) Three Emory University players have been named to the all-University Athletic Association team. Junior Matthew Levine made the first team while senior Michael Oki and sophomore Anthony Esposito made the second team.

This is the second consecutive year Levine has been chosen for the all-UAA first team. This is the first career all-UAA selection for Oki and Esposito.

Based on his overall season statistics, Levine was first in the conference for goals and points, third in assists and sixth in game-winning goals. Esposito was sixth among all conference players for assists in UAA games.


(Nov. 9) Emory University closed out its season on a high note with a 5-0 win against Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.). Matthew Levine scored two goals to finish his most productive season with 16 goals and 41 points.

The Eagles end the year with an 11-6-2 record, going 5-1-1 in the last seven contests. The only loss in that span was to a team currently ranked No. 10 in the nation.

Levine's 2.28 points per game this season is the third highest in school history. His 41 points this season is the seventh highest ever by an Eagle and his 16 goals in a season is the eighth-best ever at Emory. After three seasons, Levine ranks third in school history for career points per game, sixth in career goals and eighth in career points.

Jason Hall added a goal and an assist to finish second on the team in scoring with 23 points (11 goals, 1 assist). Hall and Levine accounted for nearly half of the team's 56 goals this season. The 56 goals is the most by an Emory team since the 1996 squad tallied 59 goals.

Other Emory goal scorers were Jacques Edeline and Chris Scharer.

The contest marked the college career finale for seniors Aaron Breeden, Douglas Crowley, Michael Oki, Allan Paul, and Todd Purvis.


(Nov. 5) Andy Goldberg scored a "Golden Goal" to give Emory University a 3-2 overtime win at Maryville (Tenn.). Goldberg's goal came at 97:31 on an assist from Matthew Levine.

Levine scored a goal and assisted on two others to increase his team-leading point total to 38. The other Emory goal was scored by Chris Nehls who set up Levine's goal.

Emory outshot the home team, 37-10. Maryville led at 1-0 and 2-1. Nehls tied the contest at 2-all in the 80th minute, just a couple minutes after Maryville's second goal.

The win was Emory's 10th of the season, one more than last season.


(Nov. 2) Emory University was denied its 10th win of the season in a 1-1 double overtime tie at New York University.

Jon Arost scored his sixth goal of the season for the Eagles in the first half. NYU countered with a goal off a corner kick midway into the second half.

Emory, 9-6-2 overall, has two more tries for its 10th win.


(Oct. 27) Matthew Levine scored on a penalty kick to give Emory University a 1-0 win at Case Western Reserve (Ohio). Levine's goal came at 52 minutes, making him 3-for-3 on PKs this season.

The goal was Levine's 13th of the season, a personal record. That total ties him for 12th place on the school's all-time season goal list.

Emory outshot the home team 24-9 forcing the Case goalie to make 10 saves.

With three games left, Emory (9-6-1) has tied its win total of last season.


(Oct. 25) Emory University lost 4-2 at undefeated Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).

Matthew Levine scored the game's first goal just 1:31 into the contest. The goal was his 12th of the season, tying his goal output of last season, with four games left to play.

Levine's goal also was the 30th of his career, making him the eighth Eagle ever to reach that plateau. He also is eighth in career points with 76.

Six minutes after Levine's goal, Carnegie responded with a pair of goals less than a minute apart.

Kevin McCarthy brought Emory back within on, 3-2, at the 56-minute mark. Carnegie scored the insurance goal to improve its record to 13-0-0.


(Oct. 20) Emory University scored a season-high eight goals in an 8-1 win against Huntingdon (Ala.).

Emory jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead. Jeff Collins and Jon Arost scored in the first nine minutes of the contest.

Chris Nehls scored on an assist from Andy Goldberg. Nehls then returned the favor by setting up Goldberg. Jacques Edeline converted off a direct kick that deflected off a defender.

Jason Hall (two goals) and Kevin McCarthy closed out the Emory scoring in the second half.

The team's previous scoring high was seven goals against Oglethorpe Sept. 11.


(Oct. 18) Matthew Levine scored two goals, including the winner, and added an assist to help Emory University defeat Piedmont (Ga.), 4-3.

Levine's second tally came at 65:24, a little more than three minutes after Piedmont tied the contest at 3-all.

Jason Hall and Levine scored to give Emory a 2-0 lead at intermission. Levine converted a penalty kick making him 2-for-2 on PKs this season.

Hall scored again, his eighth of the season, three minutes into the second half to put Emory ahead 3-1.

This is the third consecutive game Levine has scored a goal.

Emory handed Piedmont (8-1-2) its first loss of the season. Prior to tonight, Piedmont had yielded only six goals in 10 games this season.


(Oct. 13) For the second time this weekend, Emory University came out on the short end of a conference match by a 3-1 score, this time to Washington University.

Down 1-0 at halftime, Emory came out fired up in the second half, outshooting the visitors, 15-5. For the match, the Eagles outshot the visitors, 19-11.

Emory's Matthew Levine had a game-high nine shots, five on goal, but was repeatedly denied until his successful penalty kick at 72:21 that narrowed the deficit to 2-1.

Jason Hall had a golden opportunity to tie the contest when his shot slid past the keeper only to bounce off the post.

The last time Emory lost a pair of conference games at home in the same weekend was October 2000 to Chicago and Washington, both by 2-1 scores, one in overtime.


(Oct. 11) Emory University fell 3-1 to University of Chicago. The Eagles were coming off an upset of nationally ranked Rochester, the team's first win against a ranked team since beating Chicago last season.

Anthony Esposito put Emory ahead 1-0 at the 20-minute mark with his second goal of the season, an unassisted effort.

Todd Purvis made a season-high 10 saves for Emory, surpassing his previous high of eight, against Rochester last weekend. His teammates added two saves of their own. The Eagle defense yielded a season-high 21 shots at goal, eclipsing the previous high of 14.

This is the second consecutive time Chicago has beaten Emory in Atlanta. The last was a 2-1 overtime decision in 2000. Prior to that, Emory was 6-0 all-time at home against Chicago.


(Oct. 8) Jason Hall scored two goals to help Emory University to a 4-0 non-conference win at LaGrange (Ga.).

Jon Arost and Jeff Alexander also scored for the Eagles who improved their season record to 6-3-1.

Todd Purvis and Rohit Agarwal shared the shutout in goal. Purvis played the first 80 minutes.

Hall's goals were his fifth and sixth this season, tying him for the team lead with Matthew Levine.


(Oct. 5) Junior midfielder Chris Nehls scored the Golden Goal with five minutes left in the second overtime to help Emory defeat conference rival Rochester University (NY) 1-0. The goal was Nehls' second on the year.

Senior goalkeeper Todd Purvis held Rochester, currently ranked 14th in the nation, scoreless through 104 minutes of play. The game marked his second official shutout and the third Emory shutout this season. Purvis had four saves in the game bumping his season total to 32, and lowering his goals against average to 1.58 goals per game.

Sophomore midfielder Jon Arost has an assist on the game-winning shot. The assist was Arost's sixth on the season, which ties him for the team lead.

The Eagles improve to 5-3-1 for the season and 1-0-1 in UAA competition.


(Sept. 28) Emory University battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Brandeis (Mass.). This is the first tie ever between the two teams.

For the second consecutive game, Jason Hall scored the lone goal for Emory. He scored his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Anthony Esposito at the 43-minute mark to tie the game. Hall scored Emory's only goal in its loss to Greensboro (N.C.) last weekend.

Emory outshot the home team, 20-11. Todd Purvis made five saves in goal for the Eagles.


(Sept. 22) Emory University fell 3-1 to Greensboro (N.C.). The Eagles struck first on a goal by Jason Hall, his third of the season, with assists from Michael Oki and Chris Nehls, at the 32-minute mark. Greensboro tied the contest less than a minute later and added two more goals in the final 20 minutes of the match.


(Sept. 14) Jon Arost scored the winning goal with seven minutes left in regulation as Emory University edged Erskine (S.C.), 3-2. Emory led 1-0 on a first-half goal by Jacques Edeline, his fourth in two games. The Eagles went back ahead, 2-1, on Matthew Levine's sixth goal of the season at 65 minutes.

Erskine tied the game a minute later to set the stage for Arost's heroics. He was assisted on the winner by Levine and Anthony Esposito.

Emory used three goalies in the contest, in part because starter Todd Purvis had to leave after being shaken up by a bad tumble to the ground. The Eagles (4-2) outshot the visitors, 26-6.


(Sept. 11) Jacques Edeline recorded a hat trick to help Emory University to a 7-0 win at Oglethorpe (Ga.). Edeline scored the first goal two minutes into the game, added his second at the 13-minute mark and completed the hat trick at 55 minutes. Other Emory goal scorers were Aaron Breeden, Matthew Levine, Michael Oki and Andy Goldberg.

Goalies Todd Purvis (62 minutes) and Rohit Agarwal shared the shutout, combining for five saves. Emory outshot the opposition 25-7.

This is the second hat trick by an Eagle this season, the other was by Levine on Sept. 1. Levine had a different type of hat trick today, picking up three assists. The trio of assists ties a school record achieved 14 times previously, including Levine against Oglethorpe last September.


(Sept. 10) The game time for the Sept. 14 home contest against Erskine has been moved up to 2 p.m. Eastern time.


(Sept. 7) Emory University fell to Christopher Newport 5-3 in the championship game of the Sonny Carter Memorial Classic. The Eagles (2-2) got goals from Andy Goldberg, Patrick Emery and Jason Hall. In the six-year history of the Sonny Carter Classic, Emory has won four times and finished second twice.


(Sept. 6) Jon Arost scored a pair of goals for Emory University in a 3-0 win Friday night against Methodist College (N.C.). The Eagles (2-1) play Christopher Newport College (Va.) Saturday night for the championship of the Sonny Carter Memorial Classic.

Arost put Emory on the board at the 14-minute mark with assists from Matthew Levine and Kevin McCarthy. Arost closed out the scoring with his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the final minute of the game. In between Jason Hall converted after being set up by Michael Oki and Andy Goldberg.

Goalie Todd Purvis picked up the shutout with three saves. Emory outshot Methodist, 14-7.


(Sept. 1) Matthew Levine recorded a hat trick to lead Emory University to a 5-1 win against Millsaps (Miss.). Levine also scored Saturday giving him four goals in the seaon's first two games. Jon Arost and Anthony Esposito added goals for the Eagles (1-1). The hat trick was the second of Levine's career. He becomes the seventh player in school history to have multiple career hat tricks.


(Aug. 31) Emory dropped its season opener, 2-1, at Rhodes (Tenn.). Matthew Levine, the team's leading scorer last season, scored the Eagles' goal at the 35-minute mark. All three goals were scored in the first half. Emory outshot Rhodes 14-9. Goalie Todd Purvis made seven saves.


(Aug. 26) Emory University has been picked to finish fourth in the University Athletic Association, according to a pre-season poll of conference coaches. Carnegie Mellon was the overwhelming favorite of the coaches to claim its third consecutive championship. Only one other team in UAA men's soccer history has won three straight Association titles (Rochester from 1988-90). Washington University of St. Louis was picked to finish second in the Association, followed by Rochester at third.
