EMORY NAMES SONNY TRAVIS INTERIM MEN'S SOCCER COACH
(July 31) Sonny Travis, the head men's soccer coach at Virginia
Wesleyan since 1989 and school's athletic director since 1999, has
been named interim head coach of the Emory men's soccer program for
the 2007 season. The announcement was made by Emory Interim
Athletic Director Myra Sims.
Travis comes to the Eagles' program after an extremely successful
18-year stint with the Virginia Wesleyan program. During his
tenure, he has established himself as the school's all-time
winningest coach with a record of 270-74-31. He directed Virginia
Wesleyan to 13 NCAA appearances, including four this decade (2000,
2003, 2005, 2006), and eight Old Dominion Athletic Conference
championships. He had three of his squads advance to the NCAA
Tournament's Final 16. He has been honored as the "Coach of the
Year" on 15 occasions including five ODAC Conference
selections. In 21 years of coaching at the Division III
level, which includes a three-year stay at Centre College
(1986-89), Travis a career ledger of 294-92-37. He is ranked
14th among Division III's all-time winningest coaches.
"Emory is a prestigious University and the University Athletic
Association is one of the top conferences in the nation," Travis
said. "I'm looking forward to working with true
student-athletes who strive to be successful both on and off the
field. I am passionate about the sport of soccer and aware of
the great tradition that it has had at Emory. I am looking
forward to the upcoming season."
Travis holds a Class "A" license with the United States Soccer
Federation as well as an NSCAA Premier Diploma. He serves as
a state or district Olympic Development Program coach in three
states and is presently on the Virginia Coaching Education Staff
for licensing coaches at the USSF "D" and National "C" courses
conducted in Virginia.
Travis played collegiately at Slippery Rock University where he
earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and health in
1977. He obtained his master's degree in physical
education/sports administration concentration from the University
of North Carolina in 1980.
Travis takes over for Mike Rubesch who resigned as head coach in
June to take a position with a professional team in South
Africa.
The Eagles open their regular season on Friday, August, 31 with a
home match against Mississippi College at 7:30 p.m.
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER COACH MIKE RUBESCH RESIGNS - WILL TAKE POST WITH SOUTH AFRICAN PROFESSIONAL TEAM
(June 23) Mike Rubesch, who has been affiliated with the Emory
University men's soccer program for 23 years, the last 19 as head
coach, has announced his resignation. Rubesch will take a
position with the AJAX (pronounced I-AX) Team of the Premier Soccer
League (PSL) located in Capetown, South Africa.
During his distinguished tenure at Emory, Rubesch compiled an
overall record of 236-99-22, good for a 69.1 winning
percentage. Rubesch posted 15 campaigns of 10 or more wins
including an 11-6 ledger during the 2006 campaign. He guided
the Eagles to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and five
first-place finishes in the University Athletic Association
(UAA).
Rubesch joined the Emory soccer program in 1984 and served as an
assistant under Tom Johnson through 1987 before assuming the head
coaching duties for the 1988 season. He also directed Emory
women's soccer program in its first two years of existence
(1986-87). Prior to his arrival at Emory, he coached boys and girls
soccer at Atlanta's St. Pius High School from 1981-84.
"I have had an incredible 23 years at Emory and truly appreciative
of the opportunities that have come my way over that time," Rubesch
said. "I feel lucky to have experienced working for the best
school and athletic department in the country. I have always
firmly believed that Emory soccer is all about the players and
family and I am blessed to have been a part of so many wonderful
young men's lives here.
"I'm indebted to Tom Johnson for providing me the opportunity to
come to Emory years ago," Rubesch continued. "A joy for me
was to coach Tom's son, David, who served as a captain while he was
here. The memories of having played in the most prestigious
and competitive Division III conference, and the friendships that
developed with those coaches will stay with me forever. Along those
lines, I will always value and treasure the relationships with the
coaches, staff and administrators who I had the pleasure of working
with at Emory."
Rubesch was honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America as the regional "Coach of the Year" in 1988, 1989 and 1991.
In addition, he and his assistants were recognized by the UAA as
its "Coaching Staff of the Year" in 1988, 1989, 1996, 1998 and
2003. He coached nine players who earned All-America acclaim
and five who were chosen as UAA Player of the Year.
Rubesch has coached in the Georgia Olympic Development Program
since 1987. He has coached the Georgia ‘84 and ‘87
teams that advanced to the final four of the 2002 and 2005 national
championships. In addition, he is currently the '91 Regional
Team that competed in Spain in 2006 and Argentina in 2007.
Emory Interim Athletic Director Myra Sims has announced that an
interim head coach will be named for the 2007 season.
MENS SOCCER'S KAUFMAN NAMED TO TWO ALL-REGION TEAMS
(Dec. 5) Emory University defender Matthew Kaufman was named to two separate all-region teams for his performance during the 2006 season. Kaufman, a senior, was voted to the inaugural d3kicks.com all-South Region second team, and the NSCAA/adidas all-South Region second team.
This marks the second straight season that Kaufman has been named to the all-South team. Last season, Kaufman was named to the NSCAA/adidas all-South Region third team. This is the first year that d3kicks.com has voted on all-region teams.
This marks the 23rd consecutive year that the Eagles have had a representative on the all-region team.
FIVE EAGLES RECEIVE ALL-UAA HONORS
(Nov. 14) Five members of the Emory University men's soccer team
received all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors for the
2006 season. Matthew Kaufman was named to
the all-conference first team, Patrick Carver was
named to the second team, and Chad Chambers,
Tai Doan and Brandon Rust each
received honorable mentions.
This marks the second-consecutive year that Kaufman has been named
as an all-UAA first team defender. The senior co-captain
started all 17 games for the Eagles this season, helping Emory hold
its opponents to less than a goal per game.
Patrick Carver was honored by the conference for the
second-straight year as well, earning a spot on the all-UAA second
team in 2006, after being named an all-conference honorable mention
and conference rookie of the year last season. The sophomore
forward led the team in all scoring categories, registering six
goals and nine assists for 21 total points during the season.
Chambers received the first all-UAA honorable mention of his
career. The forward finished the 2006 campaign with four
goals and six assists for 14 points. Doan and Rust each
received an all-UAA honorable mention, the first conference honor
for both players.
This is the fourth-straight season that the Eagles have had five or
more all-conference honorees. The Eagles finished the 2006
campaign with an 11-6-0 record.
EMORY LOSES SEASON FINALE TO CARNEGIE
MELLON
(Nov. 5) Emory University concluded the 2006 season with a loss,
dropping a 2-0 match to Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).
The Eagles' defense held strong in the first half of the match,
holding Carnegie Mellon scoreless, with just three shots on
goal. However, the tide turned in the second half for Emory,
as the Tartans registered two goals to secure the victory.
Patrick Carver led the Eagles offensively, taking
five shots during the game, three of which were on goal.
Carver finishes the season leading the team in goals (six), assists
(nine) and points (21).
The game marks the final collegiate game for Emory's six graduating
seniors, forward Chad Chambers, midfielders
Tai Doan and Greg Rusiecki, and
defenders Brandon Rust, Alex Grigalunas and
Matthew Kaufman. The seniors have led Emory
to 54 wins and two NCAA Tournament berths over the past four
seasons.
The Eagles finish the 2006 season having out-shot their opponents
266-152 during the regular season, and outscored opposing teams
30-16. Emory concludes the year with an 11-6-0 record, the
fifth-season that Emory has registered a double-digit win total.
FOUR EAGLES NAMED TO THE COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
TEAM
(Nov. 3) Four members from the Emory University men's soccer team were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-District team. Senior Alex Grigalunas was named to the academic all-district first team, while senior Brandon Rust and sophomores Jordan Edelman and Patrick McFarland were named to the second team. The four honorees are the most from one team in Emory history.
Grigalunas becomes the 10th men's soccer player in Emory history to be named to the academic all-district first team. The co-captain defender has started every game for the Eagles this season, helping Emory to seven shutouts this season. Offensively, Grigalunas has two goals this season, both of which were game winners. The neuroscience and behavioral biology major was named an academic all-conference honoree earlier this season for the third time in his career.
Brandon Rust, an economics major, has five assists this season, including three on game-winning goals. The co-captain helped anchor the Eagles' backfield throughout the year, starting all 16 Emory games. Rust is a three-time academic all-conference honoree.
Jordan Edelman and Patrick McFarland were both in their first
year of eligibility for the academic honor. Edelman, a
defender, has stepped into a starting role in the backfield in his
second year on the team. Besides his defensive contributions,
Edelman has one assist this year. McFarland has five goals
and five assists for 15 points this season, good for second on the
team. Both Edelman and McFarland received academic
all-conference honors this season.
By virtue of earning a spot on the Academic All-District first
team, Grigalunas will be placed on the ballot for the CoSIDA
Academic All-America team. Voting for the Academic
All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information
Directors of America. Emory nominees represent the "college
division" in District 3 which is composed of NCAA Division II and
III, and NAIA schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North
Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TO CONCLUDE THE 2006 REGULAR
SEASON

GAME FACTS - Emory University will play its final
regular season game of the 2006 campaign on Sunday, as the Eagles
will travel to Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.). The Eagles
are 9-8-2 all time against the Tartans, but are 0-6-1 against
Carnegie Mellon since 1999. The Eagles suffered a 1-0
double-overtime defeat, as the Tartans scored in the 102nd minute
last season. Emory defender Alex Grigalunas
has a goal in three career games against the Tartans.

according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA), enter the game with an 11-5-0 record and are 2-3-0 in
conference games this season. Emory is currently in seventh
place in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
The Tartans enter the game with a 10-5-0 record and are 3-3-0 in
conference games this season. Carnegie Mellon, ranked 10th in
the Mid-Atlantic Region according to the NSCAA, is in fourth place
in the UAA.

EAGLES SUFFER 4-1 LOSS TO CASE WESTERN RESERVE
(Oct. 29) The Emory University men's soccer team dropped a game to the 15th ranked Western Reserve University (Ohio), losing 4-1 to the Spartans.
Patrick McFarland scored the lone Eagle goal in the 77th minute off an Andrew Zalk assist, but with Emory trailing 3-0 at the time, it was too little too late for the Eagles. The goal for McFarland was his fifth of the season.
"This was a sad day, but these things happen in sports" said Emory head coach Mike Rubesch. "This will be a tough one to get over, but we'll have to, because we start training again on Tuesday."
The loss came on Emory's ‘Senior Day' as the Eagles celebrated the last home games for six of their players. Defenders Matthew Kaufman, Brandon Rust, and Alex Grigalunas, midfielders Tai Doan and Greg Rusiecki and forward Chad Chambers all played in their final game at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Sunday.
"I'm extremely proud of our six seniors. You can take a look at our record over the past four seasons and see why," said Rubesch.
With the loss, Emory falls to 11-5-0 this season. The Eagles will play their game of the season next weekend, as they will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to face off against Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TEAM WINS CLOSE 1-0 CONFERENCE GAME OVER ROCHESTER
The Emory University men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over UAA rival Rochester. This win gives the Eagles an 11-4-0 regular season record and brings their UAA record to 2-3 while Rochester dropped to 7-4-3 and 1-2-2 in UAA play.
The deciding goal of the game came off the foot of senior Chad
Chambers in the 73rd minute, his fourth of the year. The goal
came on the third consecutive shot in the box after the first two
were blocked. Junior goalkeeper Keith Meehan made a spectacular
leaping one-handed save early in the second half which helped
secure the victory for Emory University.
Emory enjoyed a decided advantage in play and finished with a 14-9
advantage in shot attempts while also having an overwhelming
advantage in shots on goal 9-1.
"It was a classic UAA Rochester vs. Emory showdown," Emory Head Coach Mike Rubesch said. "I'm real proud of our guys for taking control in the second half and the win was a total team effort."
Emory will close out home portion of its schedule Sunday (Oct. 29) when it hosts Case Western beginning at 1:30 p.m.

EMORY'S KEITH MEEHAN NAMED UAA MEN'S SOCCER ATHLETE OF
THE WEEK
(Oct. 24) Emory University goalkeeper Keith Meehan
was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Soccer
Defensive Athlete of the Week for his performance last week.
Meehan recorded his fifth shutout of the season in a 3-0 Eagles win
over Greensboro College (N.C.), making six saves during the game,
including three saves in a 10 second period in the 20th minute to
keep Greensboro off of the scoreboard. The junior improved
his record to 10-4-0 and lowered his season goals against average
to 0.70. His career goals against average of 0.51 is the
lowest in school history. Meehan's play in goal helped the
Eagles improve to 10-4-0 this season.
Meehan was one of five Eagles chosen by the UAA as an Athlete of the Week this week. It is the first time this season he has been awarded the honor.
EMORY DEFEATS GREENSBORO IN A NCAA TOURNAMENT REMATCH
(Oct. 21) Emory University was able to exact some revenge against the team that eliminated it from the 2005 NCAA Tournament, defeating Greensboro College (N.C.) 3-0.
The Eagles came alive offensively in the 37th minute, as Alex Diego scored his third goal of the season off a Patrick Carver corner kick. The Eagles added two more goals in the second half, with Marc Del Marmol and Matthew Kaufman each scoring their first goals of the 2006 campaign.
Emory goalkeeper Keith Meehan made six saves for the Eagles, including three in a 10 second period during the 20th minute of the game. Meehan improved has recorded 46 saves in 14 games this season.
"A 3-0 win against Greensboro College says it all," said Emory head coach Mike Rubesch. "It was a total team performance. I am very pleased."
The Eagles improved to 10-5-0 with the win, recording their fifth-consecutive season of double-digit victories. Emory will play its final two home games next weekend, as the Eagles will welcome the University of Rochester (N.Y.) and Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) to the Woodruff P.E. Center.
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TO MEET GREENSBORO COLLEGE IN AN NCAA
TOURNAMENT REMATCH
Oct. 18
GAME FACTS - Emory University will meet a familiar
opponent, as the Greensboro College (N.C.) Pride will come to
Atlanta to face the Eagles. This will be the 18th meeting
between the two teams, with Greensboro holding a 12-5 record
against the Eagles in the previous games. The Eagles have won
two of the last three regular season matches against the Pride.
The Eagles defeated Greensboro during the regular season last year,
picking up a 1-0 victory when Patrick Carver
scored an unassisted goal. Chad Chambers has
one goal and Brandon Rust has two assists in four
career matches against the Pride. Emory and Greensboro have met in
the NCAA Division III tournament three times, with Greensboro
winning all three matches, including a 1-0 Pride win over the
Eagles in the first round of the 2005 Tournament.
Highlights of the series include a match that set the tempo for the
Eagles' 1998 season. Trailing Greensboro, the eventual
national runner-up, 4-2 with 23 minutes remaining, Emory forward
Ahmed Mohyeldin ('99) scored two goals and
assisted on another to give the Eagles a 5-4 win.

EMORY MEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS LOSS TO BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY
(Oct. 16) Emory University out-shot Brandeis, but the opportunities were not enough, as the Eagles dropped a 1-0 decision to the Judges.
Emory took 18 shots during the game, 14 of which were on goal, while the Eagles defense held Brandeis to 11. Emory also held an 11-6 advantage in corner kicks, including attempting six in the second half.
"We are extremely snake bit right now," said Emory Head Coach Mike Rubesch. "We're just having trouble getting the ball in the goal."
The Eagles fall to 9-4-0 this season, and hold a 1-3-0 record in conference play. Emory will return home on Saturday to face a regional opponent and long-time rival in Greensboro College (N.C.). The game will be a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament first-round match, when Emory was eliminated in a 1-0 loss.
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
(Oct. 13) Emory University suffered a 2-0 loss to New York University, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Violets.
New York scored two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game, and the Eagles were unable to strike back.
"We played well in the second half of the game, but we just couldn't get a goal," said Emory Head Coach Mike Rubesch. "It's a big win for NYU."
The Eagles fall to 9-3-0 this season, and 1-2-0 in conference play, with the loss. Emory will be back in action on Sunday, when the Eagles will face off against Brandeis University (Mass.).

GAME FACTS - Emory University will continue with
its conference schedule this weekend, as the Eagles will travel to
take on two University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents in New
York University and Brandeis University (Mass.).
Emory will face off against the New York University Violets on
Friday afternoon. This will be the 19th meeting between the
two teams, with the Eagles holding a 14-1-3 record in the previous
matches. Emory defeated the Violets 4-0 last season, as
Tai Doan, Chad Chambers and
Patrick Carver each recorded a goal and an assist
in the game.
On Sunday, the Eagles will travel to Brandeis University
(Mass.). Emory is 14-4-1 all time against the Judges.
The Eagles beat Brandeis last season, winning 7-0.

NO. 17 MEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS 2-1 LOSS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
(Oct. 7) Emory University suffered its second loss of the season, dropping a 2-1 decision to its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival University of Chicago (Ill.).
After falling behind 1-0 after the first half of play, the Eagles came back strong in the second half, tying the game in the 59th minute as Chad Chambers scored his third goal of the season. Patrick Carver assisted on the goal, his team-leading seventh assist of the year.
"We changed our play in the second half," said Emory Head Coach Mike Rubesch. "We thought we would wear them out, but Chicago was a physically strong team, and they played tough."
Chicago scored again in the second half, giving the Maroons a 2-1 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.
"The second goal was a killer for us psychologically," continued Rubesch. "Playing from behind is harder, and we haven't had to do it all season long."
The Eagles, ranked 17th in the nation, fall to 9-2-0 this season and 1-1-0 in conference play. Emory will continue its conference schedule next weekend, when the team will travel to New York University and Brandeis University (Ma.).

No. 9-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TEAM DROPS TOUGH 1-0 OVERTIME ROAD DECISION TO WESTMINSTER
(Oct. 1) -- The ninth-ranked Emory University men's soccer team saw its nine-game unbeaten streak come to an end as Westminster College edged the Eagles, 1-0, in two overtimes. The setback dropped Emory's record to 9-1 while Westminster improved to 6-4-1.
The Blue Jays made the most of an Emory turnover in the game's
waning moments and secured the win when Matt Mercer scored on a
breakaway with just 20 seconds left (109:40).
Emory enjoyed a decided advantage in play and finished with an 18-6
advantage in shot attempts while finishing with an 11-2 bulge in
corner kicks. Westminster goalkeeper Jack Rubenstein recorded
six saves in picking up the shutout.
"Westminster played a perfect game in that they kept us from
scoring and then capitalized on its scoring opportunity," Emory
Head Coach Mike Rubesch said. "It's a tough loss but we will
learn from it. We have the rest of our UAA games to prepare for and
we will move on from here."
Emory gets back into action next Saturday (Oct. 7) when it hosts Chicago beginning at 1:30 p.m.
NO. 9 EAGLES DEFEAT 22ND RANKED WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
(Sept. 30) Emory University remained undefeated this season, winning its first University Athletic Association (UAA) conference game of the season against 22nd ranked Washington University (Mo.) 1-0.
Tai Doan scored the lone goal of the game for the Eagles, coming off of a direct free kick from 15 yards out in the 65th minute. The goal was Doan's first of the season, and his second career game-winning goal in a conference game. Three of the senior's four career goals have come in conference games.
Keith Meehan recorded his fifth shutout of the season for Emory, making two saves during the game. The junior co-captain has won each of his first 14 decisions in goal for the Eagles to start his career.
"This was a tough UAA game on the road and a very tight contest," said Eagles' head coach Mike Rubesch. "Washington University is ranked in the top 25, but our defense was solid and we were able to come away with the win."
The win marked the second time this season Emory has come away with a victory against a team ranked in the top-25 nationally. Emory, ranked ninth in the nation, improves to 9-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play. The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, when they will face off against Westminster College (Mo.).

NINTH-RANKED EMORY DEFEATS DIVISION II OPPONENT TO REMAIN PERFECT THIS SEASON
(Sept. 26) The Emory University Eagles won their eighth-consecutive game to start the season, defeating a Division II school in Clayton State University (Ga.) 3-1.
"It was a great victory for us against a very talented Division II team that was ranked in the top 10 nationally in the preseason," said Emory Head Coach Mike Rubesch.
Emory was led by sophomore forward Patrick Carver, who was involved in each of the three Emory goals. Carver scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, with assists from Chad Chambers and Patrick McFarland. Three minutes later, Carver, along with Chad Chambers, assisted on a Joey Howie goal to put the Eagles up 2-0.
The Lakers attempted a comeback, scoring just over a minute into the second half. Carver answered back though, scoring off of a Joey Howie assist for his second goal of the game.
"I thought we had a tremendous first half of soccer," said Coach Rubesch, "The way we responded after they scored a goal in the opening minutes of the second half was terrific. After we scored that third goal, we took control of the game control of the game and finished it off."
Carver has four goals and three assists in his last three games. He leads the team this season in goals (six), assists (six) and points (18).
Goalkeeper Keith Meehan continued his winning streak, picking up his 13th consecutive victory to start his Emory career. Meehan is 8-0-0 this year, and has played every minute in goal for the Eagles this season.
Emory, ranked ninth in the nation, improves to 8-0-0 this season, and will begin conference play on Saturday against the Washington University (Mo.).

No. 10-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TEAM POSTS 3-0 VICTORY OVER UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH
The 10th-ranked Emory University men's soccer kept its unbeaten
record intact Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 road win over the
University of the South. With the win, the Eagles boost their
record to 7-0 while the Tigers slip to 0-5-2.
After a scoreless first half that saw Emory register 11 shot
attempt to the Tigers' five, the Eagles got on the board at the
60:47 mark of the contest when senior Alex
Grigalunas (Snellville, GA) register his second of the
campaign with an assist going to sophomore Patrick
Carver (Springfield, MO). Junior Alex
Diego (Santa Cruz, CA) gave Emory a 2-0 advantage when he
came up through with his second marker of the year at 78:50.
The Eagles closed out the game's scoring just 20 seconds later when
senior Chad Chambers (Alpharetta, GA) was credited
with his second tally of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Keith Meehan (Tampa, FL) registered three saves en route to his third shutout in the last four games and fourth of the year. Sewanee keeper Kevin Karpay recorded eight stops.
Emory finished with a decisive 20-9 edge in shot attempts while
Sewanee held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
"We are pleased with the result and happy to get the win," Emory
Head Coach Mike Rubesch said. "Sewanee is a tough place to
play. We went there a couple of years ago and lost so it is
always in the back of your mind. The game was tied at
halftime and I thought we were playing well. We finally got
some big goals in the second half and we'll take a 3-0 win on the
road anytime."

Alex Diego scored the lone goal of the game in the 23rd minute, the first of the year for the junior midfielder. Diego was assisted on the goal by Joey Howie and Brandon Rust. Rust leads the team with four assists this season.

NINTH RANKED EAGLES SHUT OUT PIEDMONT 3-0
(Sept. 12) Emory University scored two goals in the first 10 minutes against Piedmont College (Ga.) on the way to a 3-0 win.
The Eagles first goal came three minutes and 24 seconds into the game, when Chad Chambers converted a goal off of a pass from Patrick Carver and Patrick McFarland. Just over six minutes later, Chambers assisted on a Patrick McFarland goal to put the Eagles up 2-0.
"Chad has been playing well," said Emory Coach Mike Rubesch. "He's been opening up opportunities for other players." Chambers now has five points this season (one goal and three assists).
Andrew Zalk added a goal with just over four minutes left in the first half. Greg Rusiecki assisted him on the play.
After a goal and an assist tonight, Patrick McFarland continues his strong play this season. McFarland leads the Eagles with four goals and ten points this year. The sophomore forward has nine points in the two games he has played against Piedmont during his career, including a hat trick last season.
Keith Meehan played the entire game in goal for Emory, making two saves and picking up his second shutout of the season. Meehan is now 4-0-0 this season, and 9-0-0 to start his Emory career.
The Eagles, ranked ninth in the nation, improved to 4-0-0 this season. This is the fourth consecutive year, and the eighth time in the program's history, that the Eagles have opened up the season by winning each of their first four games.
"At the end of the day, it's a 3-0 win at home, and we'll take it," said Rubesch. "But, there is still room for improvement."
The Eagles will play their first road game of the year against Lynchburg College (Va.) on Sunday.
PATRICK MCFARLAND NAMED UAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK; EAGLES JUMP TO NINTH IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
(Sept. 12) Emory University forward Patrick McFarland was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Offensive Athlete of the Week for Men's Soccer after picking up his second-career hat trick against the College of New Jersey, and assisting on the game-winning goal against Christopher Newport University (Va.). McFarland became the player in school history to have multiple hat tricks as and Eagle.
Meanwhile, the Eagles have moved up in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings to ninth, after beating the seventh-ranked College of New Jersey en route to winning the Emory University Tournament. The Eagles have started their season 3-0-0 for the fourth straight year.
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TEAM CLAIMS TOURNAMENT WIN WITH 2-1 OVERTIME TRIUMPH OVER CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY
(Sept. 10) -- The 11th-ranked Emory University men's soccer team captured its own tournament championship Sunday afternoon with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Christopher Newport University in the title game. With the win, Emory now stands 3-0 on the year.
Junior Joey Howie (Savannah, GA) was the hero as he deposited a shot off a nifty centering pass from sophomore Patrick Carver (Springfield, MO) past CNU goalkeeper Matt Tengs 4:39 into the first overtime session. The marker was Howie's first of the campaign.
Carver got Emory on the board first at 82:40 with his second tally of the year when he headed in a pass from Brandon Rust. The Captains tied the game five minutes later when Matt Page converted an opportunity off a corner kick.
For the game, CNU recorded 15 shot attempts compared to Emory's effort of 13. Junior goalkeeper Keith Meehan (Tampa, FL) registered three saves in picking up the win while Tengs finished with four stops.
"We have a target on our back and with this being a south game Christopher Newport really came at us," Emory Head Mike Rubesch said after the game. "Psychologically, we might have been a little too comfortable following Saturday's result. We certainly can play better and more efficiently but at the end of the day it's a win and we'll take it."

11TH RANKED MEN'S SOCCER TEAM UPSETS SEVENTH -RANKED COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY
Patrick McFarland led Emory University with his second-career hat trick, as the 11th ranked Eagles upset the seventh-ranked College of New Jersey 4-1. The game was billed as the "Game of the Week," according to d3kicks.com.
McFarland got the Eagles off to a quick start, giving Emory a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the game, with a goal on a crossing pass from Joey Howie. After the College of New Jersey tied the game early in the second half, Patrick Carver scored his first goal of the season to put the Eagles back on top. McFarland added two second-half goals to clinch the game for Emory.
Patrick McFarland now leads the team with six points this season. He finished third on the team last season with nine goals and three assists for 21 points. The hat trick was the third multiple-goal game of McFarland's Emory career.
"Pat's worked really hard," said Coach Mike Rubesch, "and Chad [Chambers] was setting things up all day." Chambers and Joey Howie each had two assists for the Eagles.
"If we can get better each week," said Coach Rubesch, "I think this team has really got a lot of potential."
The Eagles improved to 2-0-0 for the season with the win. Emory will play its final game of the Emory University Tournament tomorrow at noon against Christopher Newport University (Va.).

EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TEAM POSTS 4-0 WHITEWASH OF WISCONSIN LUTHERAN IN SEASON OPENER
(Sep. 3) The Emory University men's soccer team put on a dominant performance against Wisconsin Lutheran in its season opener, topping the Warriors by a 4-0 margin. It marks the fourth straight year that the Eagles have recorded a victory in their season-opening contest.
Emory put relentless pressure on Wisconsin throughout the match and ended the contest with a 38-3 bulge in shot attempts, representing the third-highest game mark in school history.
Senior Alex Grigalunas (Snellville, GA) registered Emory's first goal of the campaign and the lone tally of the half at 36:53 on a picture-perfect header off a corner kick taken by sophomore Patrick Carver (Springfield, OH). After the first 45 minutes of action, Emory held an 18-2 margin in shot attempts.
In the second half, the skies opened up and the teams battled through heavy rain. The inclement weather did not slow down Emory's attack as the Eagles sealed the outcome of the game with three goals in the last 27 minutes of action. Freshman Bernard Dzata (Montgomery, AL) beat WLU goalie Eric Van Dixhorn on the short side from about six yards out at 63:46 to put Emory up by a 2-0 margin. Closing out the scoring for Emory was sophomore Jack Eisen-Markowitz (Takoma Park, MD) on a blast from 30 yards out at 78:11 and junior Andrew Zalk (Short Hills, NJ) at 86:59.
Junior goalkeeper Keith Meehan (Tampa, FL) was the beneficiary
of Emory's offensive totals in registering his fifth career
shutout.
"We were brilliant between the 18s and had outstanding movement and
passing" Emory head coach Mike Rubesch said. "However, our
finishing was poor in the first half. We did have chances
that would have made the game easier for us. But it was good
that we were extended and that we had to work for the win."

GAME FACTS - Emory University men's soccer team
opens the program's 42nd season of intercollegiate play this Sunday
(Sept. 3) when it plays host to Wisconsin Lutheran. Starting
time for the season opener will be 1:00 pm.
THE COACHES - Emory is led by 19th-year Head Coach
Mike Rubesch (Erskine, '80). During his tenure at Emory, he
has chalked up a school and career record of 225-93-22. His
69.4 winning percentage ranks him 28th among active Division III
coaches. Rubesch has guided Emory to eight NCAA Tournament
appearances and five UAA championships.
Wisconsin Lutheran is led by Joe Luedke who is in his seventh
season.
THE RECORDS - Emory played one exhibition contest during the preseason with the outcome of that being a 0-0 draw at Mercer on Aug. 22.
The Eagles are coming off a successful 2005 campaign which saw them compile an overall record of 15-4, tying the second-highest win total in school history, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Wisconsin Lutheran, a member of the newly formed Northern Athletics Conference, opens it season on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Oglethorpe.
EMORY NOTES - Emory plays its first four and five of its first six games at home. Next Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 9-10), the Eagles host the Emory Invitational. Serving as captains of the 2006 squad are junior goalkeeper Keith Meehan (Tampa, FL), senior midfielder Brandon Rust (West Windsor, NJ) and senior defender Matthew Kaufman (San Diego, CA) ... Kaufman returns after earning third-team honors on the NSCAA All-Region Team a year ago ... Emory returns seven of its top eight point producers from the 2005 including top goal scorer Patrick Carver (Springfield, MO) who notched 15 markers en route to 34 points ... Carver was named the University Athletic Association's Rookie of the Year last season ... Senior midfielder Chad Chambers (Alpharetta, GA) is another vet back in the fold after bringing home second-team All-UAA honors a year ago ... EMORY AND UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER NAMED MEN'S SOCCER PRESEASON CO-FAVORITES
(Aug. 23) - Emory University and the University of Rochester men's soccer squads have been tabbed as the teams to beat in the University Athletic Association's coaches' preseason poll.
The Eagles of Head Coach Mike Rubesch garnered
three first-place votes en route to 44 points. An NCAA
qualifier last year, Emory finished with an overall record of 15-4
including a league effort of 4-3, good for third place. Rochester
enters the upcoming campaign as the defending league champion and
finished 2005 with a 16-1 overall ledger that included a
perfect 7-0 conference performance. The Yellowjackets
received four first-place votes from the coaches who were not
allowed to vote for their own teams.
Holding down the third and fourth spots, respectively, are Carnegie
Mellon (41 and the University of Chicago (31 pts.). Rounding
out the remaining teams in the rankings were Washington University
(23 pts.), New York University (20 pts.), Brandeis University (11
pts.) and Case Western Reserve (10 pts.)
After battling to a 0-0 tie against Mercer in exhibition play on
Aug. 22, Emory will open its season on Sunday, Sept. 3, with a home
contest against Wisconsin Lutheran beginning at 1:00 pm.

EMORY AND MERCER PLAY TO 0-0 EXHIBITION TIE
(Aug. 22) The Emory University men's soccer team battled to a
0-0 tie against Mercer University in an exhibition outing played in
Macon. The start of the contest was delayed for approximately
90 minutes due to severe storms in the area.
"As the score would indicate, the game was pretty much even," Emory
Head Coach Mike Rubesch stated after the match. "It was a
very good competitive game and both teams had their moments."
Emory opens the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 3, when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran at 1:00 p.m.
EMORY MEN'S SOCCER ADDS TOMMY MAURER TO COACHING STAFF
Aug. 18 -- Emory University men's soccer coach Mike Rubesch has
announced that Tommy Maurer, a former standout player at Berry
College, has joined the program as an assistant coach.
"We are looking forward to having Tommy join the Emory staff,"
Rubesch said. "I have known and followed Tommy throughout his
career. He had a great career at Berry College and owns a
solid understanding of the game."
Maurer, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., enjoyed a stellar four-year
career at Berry (2002-2005) as a midfielder and defender. As
a senior, he served as captain of the team and garnered honorable
mention All-America honors after helping the Vikings to an overall
record of 15-6. A member of two Berry squads that advanced to
the NAIA national semifinals (2003 & 2004), Maurer was a
second-team honoree to the All-Southern States Athletic Conference
his junior campaign while earning first-team recognition on the
All-TranSouth Athletic Conference squad as a sophomore in
2003. Career-wise, Maurer played in 89 games and totaled 11
goals and 11 assists for 33 points.
"I am excited to be joining the Emory soccer program and look forward to this opportunity," Maurer said. "Emory's program is held in high regard throughout the country and I am eager to make significant contributions in helping build upon the fine tradition that it has established."
A Dean's List member while at Berry, Maurer was also active in the university's Athletes Bettering the Community (ABC) Program. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in business management.
Maurer attended St. Pius X High School and was named the
Gatorade Player of the Year in Georgia for 2001-02.
The Emory men's soccer team will travel to Mercer for an exhibition
contest on Tuesday, Aug. 22, starting at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles
open their regular season at home on Sunday, Sept. 3, against
Wisconsin Lutheran.
