(Nov. 12) Emory University's senior class of Alex Diego, Troy Gams, Keith Meehan and Andrew Zalk provided leadership and talent throughout the 2007 season, leading the Eagles to a school-record 16 wins and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Diego, an all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honorable mention midfielder this season, finished the season with three goals and three assists for nine points, all career bests. Diego had two key goals late in the season for the Eagles, a game-tying score in the 88th minute against Greensboro College (N.C.), and a key goal against UAA-rival New York University. Gams was one of eight Eagles to play in each of Emory's 19 games during the season, making three starts. His three points this season was a career high, and he scored the first goal of his Emory career on September 18th against Piedmont College (Ga.). Meehan served as the co-captain this season, compiling one of the best seasons by a goalkeeper in school history. The all-UAA second team honoree started every game for the Eagles during the year, earning a school-record 16 wins, and his 0.71 goals against average is the second-lowest single season mark in school history. Zalk played in all 19 games for the Eagles as well, making five starts in 2007. He finished fourth on the team with a career-best 14 points, and his five goals and four assists were career highs as well. The four seniors oversaw one of the most successful four-year runs in school history, as the Eagles went 54-17-2 during the stretch with two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Offense:
(Nov. 5) Patrick Carver scored two goals for the
Eagles, including the game-winner, during Emory University's 4-0
victory over Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.). Carver scored
the opening goal of the match in the 13th minute, to give the
Eagles' a lead they would hold for the rest of the match. The
junior struck again in the 51st minute to further extend the Eagles
lead. He leads the Eagles' this season with 16 goals and 41
points, and is the leading scorer in University Athletic
Association (UAA) games with 16 points and six goals this
year. Carver has led Emory, ranked 17th in Division III, to a
school-record 16 victories this season.
Defense:
(Nov. 5) Emory University goalkeeper Keith Meehan
recorded his fifth shutout of the season during the Eagles' 4-0
victory over Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.). Meehan made
two saves during the match, helping the Eagles to their 16th win of
the season. It was also the 16th victory of the year for the
senior, tying a school single-season record. Meehan finished
the 2007 regular season with a school-record 0.69 goals against
average, after starting each of the Eagles' 18 games. His
performance in the Emory goal has helped the Eagles to a school
record 16 wins, and a 17th-ranking nationally this season.
Offense:
(Oct. 29) Emory University forward Patrick
McFarland scored two goals and added three assists during
two University Athletic Association (UAA) games last weekend.
Against Brandeis University (Mass.), McFarland assisted on the
game-winning goal, and scored one of his own to help Emory to a 4-0
victory. He followed that performance by assisting on two
goals and adding a late goal of his own to cement an Emory victory
over New York University. McFarland has recorded career highs
with 10 goals and 11 assists for 31 points this season, including
three goals and five assists in UAA matches. The junior has
helped the 17th-ranked Eagles to a 15-2-0 record, including a 5-1-0
mark in UAA play.
Defense:
(Oct. 29) Defender Andre Jakubowski led the Eagles
to a 2-0-0 week, helping to hold opponents to just two goals, while
scoring one of his own. Against Brandeis University (Mass.),
Jakubowksi contributed to Emory's eighth shutout of the season,
holding the Judges to two shots on goal during the 4-0 Eagles'
win. The junior then scored the game-winning goal on a header
in a 4-2 win over New York University. Jakubowski has now
scored three goals this season, including two game winners, and has
anchored an Emory defense that has held opponents to a 0.69 goals
against average. The Eagles, ranked 17th in the Nation, are
15-2-0 this season.
Offense:
(Oct. 22) Patrick McFarland recorded the
‘golden goal' against Greensboro College (N.C.), giving Emory
University a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pride last week.
McFarland's goal came in the 96th minute of the match, giving the
junior his second game-winning goal, and eighth goal overall, this
season. Both of McFarland's game-winning goals this season
have been ‘golden goals,' coming during a sudden-death
overtime period. The forward has now scored a career-best 24
points this season, good for second on the squad. The Eagles,
ranked 17th in the Nation, are 13-2-0 this season.
Defense:
(Oct. 22) Jacob Roche played the entirety of
17th-ranked Emory University's 2-1 overtime win over Greensboro
College (N.C.) in the Eagles' backfield. The defender played
95:38 of the game, holding the Pride to just one goal. In
addition, Roche helped the Eagles hold an advantage in shots on
goal, 6-3. The junior has started each of Emory's 15 games,
helping the Eagles to a 0.65 goals against average, which was the
37th-best mark in Division III at the beginning of the week.
Emory has registered a 13-2-0 record in 2007.
Offense:
(Oct. 15) Emory University's Joey Howie scored the
game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over seventh-ranked Case Western
Reserve University (Ohio). The goal came in the 48th minute
of the match, giving Emory a 2-0 lead at the time. Howie is
third on the Eagles this season in goals (five), assists (four) and
points (14), all career bests for the senior. The midfielder
has helped Emory, ranked 10th in the Nation, to a 12-2-0 record in
2007.
Defense:
(Oct. 15) Defender Jordan Edelman played all 196
minutes over two games in the Emory University backfield, during a
1-1-0 weekend for the Eagles. Edelman helped the Eagles to a
2-1 win over Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), holding the
Spartans to just two shots on goal during the match. The
junior then returned two days later to play the entirety of a
106-minute double overtime loss to the University of Rochester
(N.Y.), keeping the Yellowjackets to one goal and four shots on
goal. Edelman has started all 14 games for the Emory defense
this season, helping the Eagles to a 0.63 goals against and 12-2-0
record.
Offense:
(Oct. 8) Emory University midfielder Joey Howie
scored the game-winning goal in the Eagles' key 3-0 victory over
University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Washington University
(Mo.), ranked 11th in the nation. The senior's goal came in
the tenth minute of the game, giving the Eagles a lead they would
hold for the rest of the match. Howie is third on the team
with 12 points (four goals and four assists), and has two
game-winning goals this season. The win raised Emory's record
to 11-1-0 overall, and 2-0-0 in UAA play, as the 12th-ranked Eagles
moved into a tie for first place in the Association.
Defense:
(Oct. 8) Emory University's Keith Meehan recorded
his third shutout of the season in a 3-0 Eagles' triumph over the
11th-ranked University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Washington
University (Mo.). Meehan played all 90 minutes of the game,
making five saves including a key stop on a free kick in the 75th
minute with Emory leading by just one goal. The senior
goalkeeper's 0.63 goals against average is the second-lowest in the
UAA this season. The win brought Emory's record to 2-0-0 in
UAA play this season, tying the team for first in the
Association. The Eagles, ranked 12th in the nation, hold an
11-1-0 record on the 2007 campaign.
Offense:
(Oct. 1) Emory University's Patrick Carver scored
two goals, one to tie the match and the other to win it, against
the University of Chicago (Ill.) to lead the Eagles to a 3-2 win in
their first University Athletic Association (UAA) contest of the
2007 season. Carver's first goal of the game came unassisted
in the 79th minute of the game, bringing the Eagles even with the
Maroons at two goals apiece. In the second overtime, the
junior forward scored the contest's ‘golden goal,' leading
Emory to a 3-2 victory. He leads all UAA players with 12
goals and 27 points this season, and his 12 career game-winning
goals are one shy of the school record. The Eagles, ranked
18th in the nation, have begun the 2007 season with a 10-0-0 record
and are tied for first place in the UAA.
Defense:
(Oct. 1) Emory University's Marc Del Marmol helped
lead Emory to a 3-2 double overtime victory over the University of
Chicago (Ill.) last weekend. Del Marmol's defensive
contributions limited the Maroons to just 10 shots, seven of which
were on goal. This season the Eagles have registered 100 more
shots than their opponents, and have outscored opposing teams
39-5. The junior has helped the Eagles to a 10-0-0 start and
a 1-0-0 record in University Athletic Association play.
Offense:
(Sept. 24) Emory University's Patrick Carver
recorded four goals and one assist for nine points over three
games, helping the Eagles to a 3-0-0 record last week. On
Tuesday, Carver scored the game-winning goal in an 8-0 win over
Piedmont College (Ga.). The junior then recorded a season
high five points against the University of the South (Tenn.),
registering two goals and an assist in an 8-0 win over the
Tigers. He concluded the week with a goal against Oglethorpe
University (Ga.), securing a 3-1 win for Emory. Carver has
scored in each of the eight Eagles games that he has played in this
season, and leads the team with 10 goals and 23 points. The
forward has helped the 25th-ranked Eagles to a perfect 9-0-0 start,
the fourth in the last five years for Emory.
Defense:
(Sept. 24) Emory University's Erik Laney provided
both an offense and defensive spark for the Eagles over three games
last week. Laney was part of an Emory defense that allowed a
combined five shots on goal (11 total shots) and just one goal in
three Eagle victories. The junior defender helped to deny the
University of the South (Tenn.) a shot on goal, and scored his
first career goal, during an 8-0 win. Laney and the Emory
defense also held Piedmont College (Ga.) to just three shots in
another 8-0 victory. The Emory defense has recorded six
shutouts in nine games, and helped the Eagles outscore opponents
36-3 this season. Emory, ranked 25th in the nation, has
opened the 2007 season with a 9-0-0 record.
Offense:
(Sept. 17) Emory University's Patrick McFarland
recorded two goals and two assists over two games at the Adidas
Invitational, helping the Eagles to a 2-0-0 record and a tournament
victory. McFarland scored the ‘golden goal' against
previously unbeaten Wittenberg University (Ohio), giving the Eagles
a 2-1 overtime victory. The following day, the junior scored
a goal and assisted on two others, including the game-winning goal,
to help Emory to a 4-0 win over Heidelberg College (Ohio).
McFarland led the Eagles in goals scored, assists and points at the
Adidas Invitational, and is now tied for the team lead in assists
(three) and second in goals scored (five) and points (13) during
the 2007 season. The forward's contributions have helped
Emory to a 6-0-0 start to the 2007 season.
Defense:
(Sept. 17) Emory University defender Andre
Jakubowski helped the Eagles outscore their opponents 6-1
over two games last weekend, guiding Emory to a tournament win at
the Adidas Invitational. Jakubowski anchored an Emory defense
that shutout Heidelberg College (Ohio), holding the Student Princes
to just two shots on goal. Against Wittenberg College (Ohio),
the junior held the Tigers to one goal on just six shots on goal,
allowing the Eagles to claim a 2-1 overtime victory. Over the
two games, Jakubowski and the Emory defense helped the Eagles
outshoot their opponents 28-13. Jakubowski's contributions
have helped the Eagles open the season with a 6-0-0 record,
including four shutout victories.
Offense:
(Sept. 10) Emory University forward Andrew
Zalk scored two goals and added an assist last weekend,
helping Emory to two wins in as many games. Against Guilford
College (N. Car.), Zalk scored both of Emory's goals in a 2-1 Eagle
win, registering the first multiple goal game of his collegiate
career and his second game-winning goal. The senior also
assisted on a goal against Lynchburg College (Va.), helping the
Eagles to a 3-0 shutout win over the Hornets. Zalk's five
points during the weekend were the most by an Eagle during the
stretch, and place him third on the team through four games this
year. His contributions have helped the Eagles to a 4-0-0
start to the 2007 season.
Defense:
(Sept. 10) Emory University goalkeeper Keith
Meehan allowed one goal in 180 minutes, while playing the
entirety of two Eagle victories during the weekend. Meehan
recorded the 12th shutout of his career during a 3-0 win over
Lynchburg College (Va.), moving him into sole possession of fifth
place in school history. The senior followed that performance
by converting two saves in a 2-1 victory over Guilford College (N.
Car.), earning his fourth win of the season. Meehan now holds
a 4-0-0 record with a 0.27 goals against average for the
season.
Offense:
(Sept. 4) Emory University's Patrick
Carver scored three goals in two games last week, leading
the Eagles to a 2-0-0 start to the 2007 season. Carver scored
the opening goal of the Eagles' season, striking the game winner in
a 2-0 Emory win over Mississippi College. The junior forward
followed with a two-goal performance against Husson College
(Maine), helping the Eagles to a 4-0 victory. Carver, who has
led the Eagles in goals scored during each of the last two seasons,
led the Eagles to a win at the Emory University Tournament for the
second-straight year.
Defense:
(Sept. 4) Emory University defender Andre
Jakubowski helped the Eagles to two shutout victories, and
headed in a game-winning goal during two Emory games last
week. The junior led the Eagles defense through 180 minutes
of shutout soccer, holding Mississippi College to eight shots (six
on goal) and Husson College (Maine) to four shots (one on
goal). In addition, Jakubowski headed a corner kick into the
goal during the eighth minute of the Husson game, which ended up
being the game winner. With Jakubowski's contributions, the
Eagles opened the 2007 campaign with a 2-0-0 record and a win at
the Emory University Tournament.
