EMORY MEN'S SOCCER NAMES BEN BUERGER ASSISTANT COACH

(Feb. 12, 2009) - Emory University head men's soccer coach Sonny Travis has announced the appointment of Ben Buerger as assistant coach. Buerger will begin his duties with the Eagles on March 1.

Buerger brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and coach, to the program.  His most recent coaching experience came from 2004 through 2006 when he served as an assistant coach at Sewanee University.  During his stint with the Tigers, he coached a total of nine all-conference spots while seeing his players garner a pair of berths on the  All-South Region Team. Prior to his tenure at Sewanee, he was on the Western Kentucky University staff as an assistant coach in 2003.

Buerger enjoyed a fine collegiate playing career at Western Kentucky where he served as team captain as well as earning team MVP honors as a senior.  He landed Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors and wound up tied for third on the Hilltoppers' all-time list with 75 career starts.

He also played professionally for the Nashville Metros of the Premier Development League from 2002 through 2006 where he distinguished himself by being named captain as well as earning MVP acclaim.

"Ben is going to be an excellent addition to the staff," said Travis, who guided the Eagles to an overall record of 16-2-1 that included the program's first University Athletic Association championship since 1998.  "He has a combination of Division I and Division III coaching experience and played at a high level as a collegian.  I'm impressed with his energy and passion for the game and look forward to his contributions."

Buerger earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Western Kentucky in 2003.  He owns his certification from the American Council on Exercise and holds the NSCAA National Diploma.

EMORY'S CARVER AND DEL MARMOL NAMED TO THE NSCAA/ ADIDAS ALL-AMERICA TEAM

(Dec. 12) For just the second time in the program's history, the ninth-ranked Emory University placed two members on the NSCAA/ Adidas NCAA Division III Men's Soccer All-America Team, as senior forward Patrick Carver was named to the First Team, and senior midfielder Marc Del Marmol earned a spot on the Second Team.

The two all-Americans matches a program-best set after the 1990 season, when Ho Lee was named to the first team, and Scott Cahoon was named to the third team.  In addition, Carver became the first player in school history to become a two-time all-American, following his First Team berth after the 2007 season.

Carver also earned a spot on the all-South Region first team, and his second-straight UAA Player of the Year honor earlier in the season, becoming the first Emory men's soccer player to do so.  This season, the senior led the team with 13 goals and 33 points, and moved into second place in school history with 129 career points and 50 points.  He started all 19 games for Emory during the campaign, scoring four game-winning goals, and assisting on three game winners.

Del Marmol finished his season with a career-best eight goals and 17 points, including three game-winning goals.  The senior led all Emory players with 11 points in UAA play, and was second in the conference with five UAA goals.  Earlier in the year, Del Marmol earned his second-consecutive nod to an all-region team and an all-UAA First Team honor.  This was his first all-America honor.

Del Marmol becomes the 13th Emory player to earn a spot on the all-America team. Emory was one of six schools to have multiple representatives on the Division III All-America teams this season.

The Eagles finished the 2008 season with a 16-2-1 record, with a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, and advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

EMORY HEAD SOCCER COACH SONNY TRAVIS NAMED THE NSCAA/ADIDAS SOUTH REGION COACH OF THE YEAR

(Dec. 11) Emory University Men's Soccer Head Coach Sonny Travis was named the NSCAA/ Adidas NCAA Division III South Region Coach of the Year for 2008.

Travis led the Eagles to a 16-2-1 record during the 2008 campaign, matching a school record for wins in a season, and set a school-record with 10 home victories during the campaign.  Travis led Emory to its first University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship since the 1998 season, as the Eagles advanced to the round of 16 in NCAA Tournament.  In his two years at the helm of the squad, the Eagles have compiled a 32-5-1 record, including a 12-2-0 mark in conference play.

This is the second post-season award of the season for the Eagles' coach.  Earlier in the season, Travis and his assistant coaches were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.  This is the fourth NSCAA/ Adidas Regional Coach of the Year honor for Travis, who spent 18 years at the helm of the Virginia Wesleyan College program and three years at Centre College before coming to Emory in July of 2007.

Travis' honor marks the fourth time that an Emory head coach has won the NSCAA/ Adidas Regional Coach of the Year honor.  Former Eagle coach Mike Ruebesch won the award in 1988, 1989, and 1991.

Travis will receive the honor at the NSCAA 2008 National Convention and Awards Banquet in St. Louis, MO, on January 14th-18th.

EMORY'S DEL MARMOL, CARVER AND LAYCOCK EARN NSCAA/ ADIDAS ALL-SOUTH REGION HONORS

(Dec. 11) Three members of the ninth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer Team were honored on Thursday, as Marc Del Marmol and Patrick Carver were named to the NSCAA/ Adidas NCAA Division III All-South Region First Team, while Jonathan Laycock was named to the Second Team.

Del Marmol finished his season with a career-best eight goals and 17 points, including three game-winning goals.  The senior led all Emory players with 11 points in UAA play, and was second in the conference with five UAA goals.  This is the second-consecutive year Del Marmol has earned a nod to an all-region team, after being named to the Second Team in 2007.

Carver earned his second-straight UAA Player of the Year honor earlier in the season, becoming the first Emory men's soccer player to do so.  This season, the senior led the team with 13 goals and 33 points, and moved into second place in school history with 129 career points and 50 points.  Carver, a 2007 all-America First Team selection, is the 13th Eagle to be named to the all-region first team more than once over his career.

This is the first year that the Eagles have placed multiple players on the all-region first team since 2004, when Matthew Levine and Karl Dix both received the honor.

In his first season between the pipes for Emory, Laycock has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in the region.   He tied a school record with 16 wins during the season, and broke a 24-year old school record with a 0.47 goals-against average during the year, the ninth-lowest mark in Division III.  Laycock becomes the first Emory goalkeeper to an all-region honor since Derek Marinatos was named to the all-South Region first team in 1998.

The Eagles finished the 2008 season with a 16-2-1 record, with a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, and advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Playing on the campus of Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, VA, the Captains took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute of the game, as Bryan Davis scored from a long shot, taken 35 yards outside the goal.

Christopher Newport would later take advantage of the Eagles' pressing for a late goal, as in the 75th minute, Nao Masuda was able to score on a two-on-one breakaway, off an assist from Winston Mattheisen.

The Eagles had opportunities throughout the match, taking 14 shots, nine of which were on goal.  Emory was unable to convert, however, as Captain's goalkeeper Justin Wolfe was able to make nine saves in the victory.  Meanwhile, the Emory defense held the Captains to 10 shots, four of which were on goal.

Emory finishes the season with a 16-2-1 record, matching the school record for victories in a single campaign, while the Captains improved to 17-4-3.

(Nov. 20) Emory University will look to take another step towards an NCAA Championship on Saturday afternoon, as the fourth-ranked Eagles will travel to Newport News, VA, where they will face host-school Christopher Newport University at 3:30 PM.  Should the Eagles win, they will face the winner of Saturday's eighth-ranked Messiah College (Pa.)/ third-ranked Montclair State University (N.J.) match, on Sunday at 3:00 PM.

The Eagles are 3-4-0 all time against the Captains.  The two teams last met on September 10, 2006 in Atlanta, resulting in a 2-1 overtime win for Emory.  In the match, Joey Howie scored the 'golden goal' in overtime, while Patrick Carver finished the match with a goal and an assist, and Patrick McFarland recorded an assist on Howie's goal.

With 16 teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament, should the Eagles win their matches on Saturday and Sunday, they will advance to the Final Four in Greensboro, NC, for the first time in school history.

EMORY'S EDELMAN & LAYCOCK NAMED ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC-ALL AMERICANS

(Nov. 19) Seniors Jordan Edelman and Jonathan Laycock, of the fourth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer Team, were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), for their performances both on the field and in the classroom during the 2008 season.  Laycock earned a spot on the second team, while Edelman was named to the third team.

In his first season as a starter, goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock ranks fifth in Nation with a 0.375 goals-against average (on pace for school single-season and career records) and sixth with a 0.885 save percentage.  He has recorded a 16-0-1 record in goal for the Eagles, matching the school record for victories in a season.  Most recently, Laycock made three saves during the Eagles NCAA Tournament match against North Carolina Wesleyan, and preserved the match with a pair of stops during the shootout victory.  The senior, who was named to the all-UAA second team and Academic all-District first team earlier in the season, began the semester with a 3.62 grade point average as a business and pre-med major.

Edelman has served as the team captain of a defense that ranks 20th in the Nation in team goals-against average and ninth in shutout percentage.  In addition, Edelman has assisted on six goals on the offensive end, including one during the Eagles' NCAA Tournament match, and scored the match-clinching goal in the ensuing shootout.  Earlier in the year, Edelman was named to the all-UAA second team, and earned his third-straight ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honor, after being named to the second team in 2006, and the first team in 2007.  Edelman, a finance major, has recorded a 3.43 cumulative grade point average.

Laycock and Edelman become the seventh and eighth players in the history of the Emory Men's Soccer program to be named Academic all-Americans.  It is the first time that multiple Emory players have been named to the Academic all-America team since Karl Dix and Kevin McCarthy in 2004.

To be eligible for the national team, a student athlete had to have been selected to its District's first team. Initial nomination criteria at the District level includes being a varsity starter or key reserve, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, reaching sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by their sports information director.  Emory nominees represent the College Division, which is composed of NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA school across the country.

Since the program's inception in 1952, COSIDA has bestowed Academic All America honors on more than 14,000 student athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

FOURTH-RANKED EMORY ADVANCES ON A SHOOTOUT IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT IN 1-1 TIE WITH NC WESLEYAN

(Nov. 16) In a thrilling NCAA Division III Tournament match at the Woodruff Physical Education Center, the fourth-ranked Emory Eagles advanced to the round of 16, after a 1-1 tie with North Carolina Wesleyan College was decided by a shootout.  Emory's Jordan Edelman kicked the game-deciding penalty kick, giving the Eagles a 3-2 advantage, and the right to move on in the tournament.

Emory's crowd of 315 fans was treated to just the second shootout-deciding match in the history of the program, and the first since the 1988 postseason, when the Eagles defeated Bethany College 4-2 on penalty kicks in the first round of the tournament.  The Eagles have advanced in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1988 season, when Emory went all the way to the NCAA Quarterfinals.  The Eagles are now 1-11-2 all time in NCAA Tournament play, breaking a nine-match losing streak.

"I told the team today before the game that what has happened in the past is in the past.  This is a new team, and we hope, a new era for Emory soccer," said Emory Head Coach Sonny Travis (click here to hear the entirety of Travis' postgame interview).

The Eagles struck first in the match, as Joey Howie notched his fourth goal of the season in the 11th minute.  Sophomore Jake Graetz handled Howie's corner kick, passing to Jordan Edelman, who headed the ball across the box to Howie, to finish for the score.

Emory would carry the 1-0 advantage into halftime, in addition to a 6-3 advantage in shots.

It would not be long into the second frame, however, until the Battling Bishops would even the match at a goal apiece.  Freshman forward Owen White found the ball inside the box, following an Emory team save on a shot by Danny Persson, and was able to convert for his 12th goal of the season to tie the match.

The game would remain tied at one throughout the rest of regulation and the two overtime periods.  Emory would take the only two shots of the overtime frame, one in each period.  The Eagles finished the match with a 15-9 advantage in shots, despite both teams ending even with five shots on goal apiece.

In the shootout, Emory goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock got the Eagles off to a strong start, diving to his left to make saves on the Bishops' first two shots, taken by Benjamin Schmedes and Arkadiusz Trochowski.  After Emory senior Marc Del Marmol missed his first shot wide left, the Eagles' Patrick Carver gave Emory an advantage, converting on a shot to the left as the Bishops' goalkeeper, Alberto Faisca dove right.

"Before the [first] kick was even taken, I had an idea I was going to go right," said Laycock.  "I made the save with my legs, and once you make the first save... they are a lot more likely to miss (click here to hear the entirety of Laycock's postgame interview)."

North Carolina Wesleyan's Oliver Madejski would even the count with a shot to the high left that sent Laycock to the right on the Bishops' third kick.  The shootout would remain at one apiece, after Andre Jakubowski's kick up the middle was fielded cleanly by Faisca.

Both team would convert on their fourth kicks, as the Bishops' Nicolai Laudrup scored on a shot to the right, while the Eagles' Joey Howie evened the score with a shot to the left that sent Faisca to the right.

Ousman Sarr took the final kick for the Bishops, hitting the crossbar with his shot.  With the game at his feet, Emory's Jordan Edelman took a perfect shot to the upper left corner of the goal, just past the outstretched hands of Faisca to write Emory's ticket to the next round.

"It was incredible that Jon[Laycock] made that last save, so there really wasn't that much pressure on me," said Edelman.  "Everybody was behind me, all the fans and everybody, so once I went up for the ball and just took it... there really wasn't that much pressure (click here to hear the entirety of Edelman's postgame interview)."

With the tie, Emory's record moved to 16-1-1 on the season, while North Carolina Wesleyan ends their year with a 16-3-2 mark.  Next up for the Eagles will be the NCAA Sectionals, where the Eagles will face Christopher Newport University (16-4-3).  Stay tuned to www.go.emory.edu for the day, time and location of the match, as soon as it is released.

NO. FOUR EMORY SWEEPS UAA MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS

(Nov. 14) Fourth-ranked Emory University's historic season continued Friday, as for the first time in the history of the program, the Eagles swept the University Athletic Association's (UAA) postseason awards.  Emory senior Patrick Carver was named a UAA Co-Player of the Year, freshman Ben Schlang was named the UAA's Rookie of the Year, and Head Coach Sonny Travis and his assistants were honored as the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year.  In addition, a program-record eight Eagles earned a spot on the all-UAA teams.

Carver, who shared the honor with Ricky Griffin of Carnegie Mellon University (marking the first time the UAA has named co-Players of the Year), earned his second-straight UAA Player of the Year honor, becoming the first Emory men's soccer player to do so.  This season, the senior has led the team with 13 goals and 33 points, including three goals and three assists in UAA matches, and moved into second place in school history with 129 career points and 50 points.  Carver was also named to the all-UAA first team for the second time in his career, and has earned an all-UAA honor in each of his four collegiate seasons.

Carver joins Nate Micklos of Rochester (2004 and 2005) and Adam Hibshman of Carnegie Mellon University (2000, 2001, and 2002) as the only UAA players to earn multiple Player of the Year honors.  The award marks the seventh time an Emory player has been named the UAA's Player of the Year.

Ben Schlang becomes the second player in Emory history to earn UAA Rookie of the Year honors, following in Carver's footsteps, who earned the honor in 2005.  He finished the year leading all UAA players in conference matches with three game-winning goals, and ranked third in the conference with three assists in UAA matches, fifth with nine points, and eighth with three goals.  Overall during the season, the freshman recorded nine goals, five assists and 23 points, including a team-high five game-winning goals.  Schlang was also named an honorable mention to the all-UAA team.

This season marks the first time that the Emory coaches have garnered the UAA's Coaching Staff of the Year honors.  In his second season with the team, Head Coach Sonny Travis, along with his assistants Jacques Edeline, Ben McKenzie, and Daniel Guertin, have led the squad to a school record in victories and Emory's first UAA Championship since the 1998 season.

In addition to the all-UAA honors awarded to Carver and Schlang, Marc Del Marmol and Jacob Roche were named to the all-UAA first team, Jordan Edelman and Jonathan Laycock were named to the second team, and Andre Jakubowski and Patrick McFarland were named honorable mentions.

Del Marmol finished the regular season with a career-best eight goals and 17 points, including three game-winning goals.  The senior led all Emory players with 11 points in UAA play, and was second in the conference with five UAA goals.  This is the second all-UAA honor for Del Marmol, who was named to the second team last season.

Roach headlined the Emory defense during the season, helping the squad to a 0.64 goals against average during the campaign.  The senior started 16 of 17 games for the Eagles during the season, scoring one goal.  This is the first postseason honor of Roche's Emory career.

Edelman will finish his career with two all-UAA honors, after being named an honorable mention last season.  The defender started 16 of 17 games on Emory's backline, recording a career high five assists.

In his first season between the pipes for Emory, Laycock has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in the conference.  The senior led all UAA players with a .857 save percentage in UAA contests, and his 0.54 goals-against average in conference matches was second-best in the UAA.  Laycock has tied a school record with 16 wins this season, and is on pace to set a school record with a 0.34 overall goals-against average during the year.  This is the first postseason honor for Laycock.

Jakubowski has played in 16 games for the Emory defense, starting 15, and has contributed to the team's 11 shutouts in 17 matches this season.  On the offensive end, he has also scored a goal during the season.  This is the second-career all-UAA honor for Jakubowski, who earned all-UAA second team honors last season.

McFarland finished the campaign leading all UAA players with four assists in conference matches, and all Emory players with 11 assists overall.  The senior also scored three goals during the season, two of which came in conference play, good for 17 points overall.  McFarland is ranked third in school history with 31 career assists, and 11th in Emory history with 89 career points.  This is the second all-UAA honor of McFarland's career, following his second-team honor in 2007.

The Eagles, who finished the regular season with a 16-1-0 overall record, will host their NCAA Tournament second round match on Sunday at 1:00 PM, against North Carolina Wesleyan College.

EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TO HOST NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN COLLEGE IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

(Nov. 13) Emory University's opponent for the second round of the NCAA Tournament has been decided, as North Carolina Wesleyan College advanced to face the Eagles, after a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Virginia Wesleyan College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday.  The fourth-ranked Eagles (16-1-0) will host the Battling Bishops (16-3-1) at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Emory will enter Sunday's match with a 16-1-0 record overall this season, matching the school record for the most victories in a single season.  The Eagles are perfect at the Woodruff P.E. North Carolina Wesleyan won their first round match against Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday, scoring a game-tying goal in the final eight seconds of regulation, and winning the match in overtime.  The Battling Bishops are 16-3-1 this season, including 6-2-0 mark in matches away from home, and will enter the match ranked eighth in the South Region, according to the latest NSCAA poll.  The Eagles are 8-1-1 all time against the Battling Bishops, including a 3-1 victory the last time the two teams met, on September 10, 2005.  Patrick Carver is the only active Emory player to have scored against North Carolina Wesleyan, recording an assist in the last meeting.

Although the Eagles have just one victory in their NCAA Tournament history, that win came against North Carolina Wesleyan on November 6, 1988.  Emory won the second round match 1-0 in Rocky Mount, NC.

Emory advanced to the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time since the Eagles made three-straight tournaments from 1996-98.  The squad has now made the tournament in four of the past six seasons.

Admission for Sunday's match at the Woodruff P.E. Center will be $6 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children under 12 years old.  The winner will advance to the Sectional Round, on November 21st-23rd.

FOURTH-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER DERAILED 4-2 BY CARNEGIE MELLON

(Nov. 8) In the final regular season game of the campaign, Emory University's hopes for a perfect season were lost, as the fourth-ranked Eagles were upended by 20th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) 4-2 in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Eagles started the match strong, taking a 1-0 lead into the half after sophomore Jake Graetz scored his first goal of the season off a thrown in from Patrick McFarland in the 31st minute.

Emory would build on the lead early in the second half, as Jack Eisen-Markowitz scored his fourth goal of the season, and second in as many games, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.  McFarland would pick up his second assist of the match on the through ball to set up the goal.

However, it would be shortly after their second goal that the Eagles would lose control of the match.  Carnegie would go on to score three goals in a 10 minute stretch (from the 60th-70th minutes) to take the lead over Emory.  The Tartans would tack on a fourth goal in the 78th minute to secure the victory.

The pair of assists moved McFarland into third-place in school history with 31 career helpers.  He leads all Eagles this season with 11 assists.

The loss breaks up the Eagles' perfect season, as Emory fell to 16-1-0 on the year, and to 6-1-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.  Carnegie Mellon, meanwhile, improved to 14-2-1, including a 5-2-0 mark in conference matches.

The four goals allowed by Emory were the most in a game this season, as the Eagles have now let up seven goals in the second half of the last two matches combined.  The Eagles were also outshot (13 to 12) for the second-consecutive match, and just the second time this season.

Despite the loss, the Eagles are still guaranteed a berth into the NCAA Tournament, and at least a share of the UAA Championship for the first time since 1998, and the fifth time overall in school history.  The University of Rochester can still pull even with the Eagles for the UAA Championship, should they defeat Case Western Reserve University tonight.

The Eagles will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament brackets, set to take place on Monday, November 10th on NCAA.com.

UAA CHAMPION EMORY EAGLES LOOK FOR A PERFECT REGULAR SEASON IN FINALE AGAINST CARNEGIE MELLON

(Nov. 5) Emory University Men's Soccer will look to conclude its regular season with a perfect record, as the fourth-ranked Eagles will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to face 20th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University at 1:30 PM on Saturday.

Emory history will be on the line for the Eagles during Saturday's match.  The Eagles are looking to become the first Emory squad in a team-based sport to record a perfect record in regular season, and are looking to join Emory's 2000-01 Women's Swimming and Diving team (8-0 in dual meets) as the only perfect squads in the history of the entire Emory Varsity Athletics program.  Emory is also looking to set a team single-season record with their 17th win of the campaign.

The Eagles have already wrapped up the University Athletic Association's (UAA) automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, and at least a share of the UAA Championship.  Emory can win the championship outright with a win or a tie on Saturday, or a Rochester loss or tie.

Emory will enter Saturday's match with a 16-0-0 record, following a pair of victories last weekend against Brandeis University and New York University.  The Eagles, 6-0-0 in matches away from the WoodPEC this season, are one of four remaining unbeaten and untied teams in Division III.  Emory is tied with York College (Pa.) for the top ranking in the South Region.

Carnegie Mellon will begin the weekend with a 13-2-1 record, including marks of 4-2-1 at home and 4-2-0 in conference play.   The Tartans are ranked third in the Middle Atlantic Region.  Emory is 10-9-2 all time against Carnegie Mellon, including a 4-0 win last season.  Emory's Patrick Carver and Patrick McFarland have each scored two goals over their careers against the Tartans.

SIXTH-RANKED EAGLES CLINCH BERTH INTO NCAA TOURNAMENT WITH 6-3 WIN OVER NYU

(Nov. 2) Emory University clinched a berth into the NCAA Tournament and at least a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Sunday, as the sixth-ranked Eagles upended New York University 6-3 in Staten Island, NY.

The Eagles' 6-0-0 record in UAA matches this season, combined with a win over the 5-1-0 University of Rochester (N.Y.) earlier in the season, means that Emory will receive the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, awarded to the regular-season winner of the conference.  The Eagles also clinched at least a share of the UAA Championship, and can win it outright next week with a win or a Rochester loss or tie.  Emory will take on Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) for the season finale next weekend, while Rochester will host Case Western Reserve University (Ohio).

The Eagles also matched a school record for wins in a single season, improving to 16-0-0 with the victory.  Emory has one regular season match remaining this season, followed by at least one NCAA Tournament match, to break the school record.

Emory looked every bit like one of the best teams in Division III during the first half of the match against the Violets, taking six shots on goal, and scoring on each one.  Emory's Patrick McFarland struck first for the Eagles, scoring just 1:09 into the match for his second goal of the season, off an assist from freshman Ben Schlang

It would be less than 13 minutes before McFarland would strike again, this time off an assist from senior Patrick Carver, giving the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.

The first-half onslaught would continue for the Eagles with an 18th minute goal for Marc Del Marmol, his eighth of the season, and then 23rd and 28th minute goals for Carver.  Senior midfielder Jack Eisen-Markowitz would cap off the first half scoring for the Eagles with his third goal of the season.

The two goals for Carver give him 13 for the season and 50 for his career.  In the process, he moved past Matthew Levine ('03) and into a tie with James Doran ('96) for the most career goals in school history.  Carver is currently second in school history with 128 career points.

After taking a 6-0 lead into halftime, the Eagles would let NYU climb back into the match with three goals in the second half.  However, it would be too little too late for the Eagles, who would hold on for the victory.

Emory's Jonathan Laycock would play the first half and 24 minutes of the second half in goal, before giving way to sophomore Greg Irons for the second frame.  Laycock's record remained perfect on the season, as the senior improved to 16-0-0 on the campaign, matching an Emory goalkeeper record for wins in a season.

With the win, the Eagles remained one of four undefeated and untied teams in Division III this season.  Emory will conclude its regular season next Saturday at Carnegie Mellon, and then await the NCAA Tournament bracket announcement.

SIXTH-RANKED EMORY DEFEATS BRANDEIS 2-0; PULLS WITHIN ONE WIN OF UAA TITLE

(Oct. 31) The sixth-ranked Emory Men's Soccer Team defeated Brandeis University 2-0 on Friday night, on goals from Ben Schlang and Marc Del Marmol. Emory improved to 5-0-0 in conference play, and will clinch their first UAA title since 1998 with a win at NYU on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Schlang struck with his ninth goal of the season, off an assist from Patrick Carver in the 53rd minute.  Carver moved the ball to the end line, pulling the Brandeis goalkeeper out of position, before passing to Schlang who took advantage of the empty net.

Del Marmol would add his career-best seventh goal of the season in the 86th minute, banging in a free kick from Joey Howie, to clinch the match for the Eagles.

Schlang and Del Marmol continued to guide the Eagles through conference play.  Schlang's goal was his third game-winning score in a UAA match this season, leading all UAA players.  Meanwhile, Del Marmol's four goals and nine points in conference matches were good for first in the UAA entering play on Friday.

Senior Jonathan Laycock played the entire match in goal, lowering his goals-against average (which was third-lowest in the Nation to begin the week) to 0.29.  The Eagles are second in Division III with a 0.26 goals-against average.

The Eagles will look to clinch their first UAA title since 1998 on Sunday, when they face New York University on the road at 1:30 PM.

SCHOOL-RECORD SIX EAGLES NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT MEN'S SOCCER TEAM

(Oct. 30) In the midst of a record-breaking season, the undefeated and sixth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer Team set another school-wide mark, as six of its players were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Jonathan Laycock, Marc Del Marmol, Jordan Edelman, and Patrick McFarland were each named to the first team, while Erik Laney and Jacob Roche earned spots on the second team.

The six total honorees and the four first team members are both the most by a single team in any sport in Emory University history.  Emory's six team members matched Carnegie Mellon University for the most in any of the eight districts in the Nation, and the four first team members, along with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New Mexico, were second only to Carnegie Mellon.

In his first season as a starter, goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock ranks third in Nation with a 0.31 goals-against average (on pace for school single-season and career records) and sixth with a 0.889 save percentage.  He has recorded a 14-0-0 record in goal for the Eagles, just two shy of the school record, including six shutouts.  The senior began the semester with a 3.62 grade point average as a business and pre-med major.

Senior midfielder Marc Del Marmol has put together his best season as an Eagle, recording career-bests with six goals and one assist over 10 matches.  He currently stands fourth on the team with 13 points, and his three game-winning goals tie him for second on the squad.  Del Marmol currently holds a 3.60 grade point average as a business finance and management major.

Senior defender Jordan Edelman earned his third-straight ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honor, after being named to the second team in 2006, and the first team in 2007.  He has served as the team captain of a defense that ranks second in the Nation in team goals-against average, shutout percentage, and save percentage.  In addition, Edelman has assisted on five goals on the offensive end.  Edelman, a finance major, has recorded a 3.43 cumulative grade point average.

It was also the third Academic All-District honor for senior forward Patrick McFarland, who was named to the second team in 2006, and the first team in 2007.  McFarland also earned a nod to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team during the 2007 season.  He currently ranks 15th in the Nation with 0.64 assists per game, and leads all Eagles with nine assists during the campaign.  In addition, his 29 career assists to date are the fourth-most in school history.  McFarland has compiled a 3.62 grade point average as a Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology major.

Seniors defenders Erik Laney and Jacob Roche each earned the first Academic All-District honors of their careers.  The two have played in every game for Emory's stalwart defensive line, guiding the team to a 0.28 team goals-against average, and a 0.71 shutout percentage.  Laney, a finance major with a 3.49 grade point average, has added a career high four goals and three assists this season, while Roche, who has a 3.40 grade point average as a business administration major, has scored one goal.

By virtue of earning a spot on the Academic All-District first team, Laycock, Del Marmol, Edelman and McFarland will be placed on the ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Emory nominees represent the "college division" in District 3 which is composed of NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

SIXTH-RANKED EAGLES LOOK TO CLINCH THE UAA MEN'S SOCCER TITLE AGAINST BRANDEIS AND NYU

(Oct. 29) The Emory University Men's Soccer Team will look to lock down a NCAA Tournament this weekend, as the sixth-ranked Eagles will face Brandeis University on Friday and New York University on Sunday.  Should the Eagles win both matches, they will clinch their first University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship since 1998, and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles currently lead the UAA with a 4-0-0 record in conference play this season.  The University of Rochester and Washington University (Mo.) are tied for second behind Emory, but the Eagles hold the tiebreaker with wins over both teams.  Carnegie Mellon University (2-2-0) is in third, followed by Case Western Reserve University (1-2-1), the University of Chicago (1-2-1), Brandeis University (0-2-2) and NYU (0-4-0).

Emory will begin the weekend with a 14-0-0 record, just two wins shy of a school-record for victories in a season.  The Eagles are 4-0-0 in matches away from the Woodruff P.E. Center this season.  Emory is coming off a dominating 4-0 victory over the University of the South (Tenn.) last Friday, during which senior Patrick Carver scored a pair of goals.  The Eagles are one of four remaining undefeated and untied teams in Division III this season.

Brandeis will enter Friday's match with an 8-6-2 record, including a 6-2-1 mark at home this season.  The Judges recently ended a seven-match winless streak with victories over Springfield and Lasell.  The Eagles are 15-5-1 all time against Brandeis, including a 4-0 victory at the Woodruff P.E. Center last season, but sit at just 4-5-1 all time on the road against the Judges, and have not won a match in Massachusetts since 1998.  Patrick Carver and Patrick McFarland have each recorded two goals and an assist over their careers against Brandeis.  Friday's match will begin at approximately 7:00 PM.

NYU is 5-7-3 this season, including a 1-3-1 mark at home this season.  The Violets are in the middle of a three-match losing streak, and have dropped five of their last six games.  Emory is 15-2-3 all time against the Violets, including a 4-2 home victory last season and wins in four of the last five meetings.  Carver and McFarland have each scored a goal and two assists against the Violets during their careers.  Sunday's match is slated to start at 1:30 PM.

Emory Notes
Emory's Patrick Carver was named the UAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week, based on his two-goal performance against Sewanee... It is the second time this season, and the fifth time in his career, that Carver has garnered the honor... It was the ninth time this season that an Eagle has earned a UAA Athlete of the Week honor, and the sixth Eagle to earn the honor in the last five weeks... Carver moved into second-place in school history with 122 career points, and is one goal behind Matthew Levine (03C) for third-place in school history... Emory is ranked second in the Nation in team goals-against average (0.28), shutout percentage (0.71), and save percentage (0.897), and 16th in scoring offense (3.29 goals per game)... Senior Patrick McFarland has recorded four assists in his last three matches, and is 15th in Division III with 0.64 assists per game... McFarland moved into a tie for fourth in Emory history with 29 career assists... Goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock ranks third in the Nation with a 0.31 goals-against average, and sixth in the Nation with a 0.889 save percentage.

CARVER'S HISTORIC DAY PACES SIXTH-RANKED EAGLES TO 4-0 WIN OVER SEWANEE

(Oct. 25) Emory University's Patrick Carver scored two goals and moved into second-place in school history with 122 career points, as the sixth-ranked Eagles defeated the University of the South (Tenn.) 4-0 on Friday night.

The story of the game for the Eagles was their early scoring and solid defense throughout the match.  The Eagles took the lead quickly, as Erik Laney notched his career-best fourth goal of the season in the fourth minute of the match, off assists from Jordan Edelman and Patrick McFarland.

Carver would then break through for two-straight goals, one in the 17th minute, and the other in the 26th minute.  Freshman Ben Schlang would cap off the Eagles' first half scoring with a goal in the 41st minute, his eighth of the season.

Both teams would go scoreless in the second half of play.

The two-goal came pushed Carver past former Eagles Matthew Levine (03C) for second place in school history in points, and in all likelihood, marks the final milestone in the category Carver will reach in his career.  The Eagles' all-time points leader, Boris Jerkunica (86C) totaled 175 points during his time with the Eagles.

Carver also moved further up the list of Emory's all-time goals scorers, as his 48 goals place him one behind Matthew Levine for third, and two behind James Doran (96C) for second, in school history.  The senior co-captain leads all Eagles scorers this season with 11 goals and 26 points.

Carver was not the only Eagle to continue his trek towards history, as McFarland's two assists during the match give him 29 for his career, tying him with Ahmed Mohyeldin (98C) for fourth in school history. McFarland, who leads the team with nine assists this season, including four in his last three matches, is one assist shy of moving into a third-place tie with John Symbas (99C) for third in school history.

Emory goalkeepers Jonathan Laycock and Greg Irons combined for the shutout, the Eagles' 10th in 14 matches this season.  The Eagles lowered their team goals against average to a stellar 0.28 this year.

Emory remained one of the four undefeated and untied teams in Division III, improving to 14-0-0 (4-0-0 UAA) with the victory.  The Eagles will return to UAA action next Friday, as the Eagles will look to maintain their hold on first-place in the conference at Brandeis University (Mass.).

SIXTH-RANKED EAGLES LOOK TO MAINTAIN MOMENTUM AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH

(Oct. 22) The sixth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer Team will begin its season-ending four match road trip this weekend, as the Eagles will face the University of the South (Tenn.) on Friday at 7:30 PM in Sewanee, TN.

The Eagles are off to the best start in school history, winning 13 games to start a season for the first time in school history, including a 1-0 victory over the 17th-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday.  Emory is currently in first place in the UAA with a 4-0-0 record in conference play, and 3-0-0 in matches away from the Woodruff P.E. Center.  The Eagles recently moved up to sixth in the NSCAA National Poll, and remained in second-place in the South Region poll.

The University of the South is 4-8-1 this season, including a 2-4-1 record at home.  The Tigers, unranked in both the national and regional polls, have dropped five of their last seven matches, going 1-5-1 over the stretch.  The Eagles are 19-5-1 all time against the Tigers, including three straight victories, and an 8-0 victory last season.  Emory's Patrick Carver has three goals and two assists in three-career games against the Tigers, while Joey Howie and Michael Scannapieco have scored two goals apiece, and Patrick McFarland has recorded three assists against Sewanee.

Emory Notes
Emory senior Erik Laney was named the UAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week, for his contributions to the Eagles' backline last week... Emory defeated three ranked teams over an eight-day stretch last week, defeating 21st-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on October 12th, 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) on October 17th, and the 18th-ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.) on October 19th... The Eagles are 4-0-0 against ranked opponents this season, and have won eight-straight regular season matches against ranked-Division III opponents... Emory has finished its regular season with a school-record 10 home wins, and have finished undefeated at home for just the second time in school history... Emory is ranked third in Division III both team goals-against average (0.30) and shutout percentage (0.69).

NO. NINE EMORY TAKES CONTROL OF THE UAA WITH A 1-0 WIN OVER ROCHESTER

(Oct. 17) The Emory University Men's Soccer Team's University Athletic Association (UAA) fate is in its own hands now, as the ninth-ranked Eagles took sole possession of first place in the conference with a 1-0 victory over the 18th-ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.).

With the win, Emory improved to 4-0-0 in conference play this season, while the Yellowjackets fell to 3-1-0.  The match marked a change in roles from last season, when both teams entered the meeting with a 3-0-0 record in the UAA, and Rochester came away with a 1-0 victory.

The two teams looked like they were going to play a scoreless first half, until a deep throw in from Patrick McFarland with thirty seconds remaining in the half found the head of Marc Del Marmol, who put the ball in the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.

The score marked the third game-winning goal of the season for Del Marmol, who is having a breakout year offensively with a career-high 13 points.  It was also the third UAA goal of the season for the Eagles' defensive midfielder.  The assist for McFarland was the senior's second in as many matches.

The Eagles and the Yellowjackets played a physical first half, with 12 fouls and two yellow cards issued between the two teams.  Emory took eight shots during the first frame, four of which were on goal, while Rochester took four shots, with two on target.

It was much of the same in the second half, as the physicality of the match remained high.  Two more yellow cards were issued, one to a member of each squad, as the teams combined for 11 more fouls.

Neither of the teams, however was able to score in the second frame.  The best opportunities for Rochester came in the final 65 seconds of the match, when the Yellowjackets took four corner kicks, but were unable to convert for the goal.  Emory had a chance in the 50th minute when a McFarland shot from in front of the net took a high bounce off the crossbar, and was grabbed by the Rochester goalkeeper.

The shutout was the ninth of the Eagles through 13 games this season, and the sixth complete-game shutout for goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock, who lowered his goals-against average to 0.33 this season.

With three conference games left to go, Emory now controls its own destiny in the UAA as the only remaining undefeated team.  Should the Eagles win out, they will earn the UAA Championship for the first time since the 1998 season.  The Eagles also own tiebreakers over the two remaining one-loss teams in the conference, Washington University (Mo.) and Rochester, meaning that the Eagles would need to lose or tie in two of the three remaining UAA games to open the door for another team.

The match was the final home game of the season for Emory, as the Eagles will end the regular season with a 10-0-0 record at the Woodruff P.E. Center.  It marks the first time the Eagles have gone undefeated at home since 1999 (9-0-1 record), and just the second time they have gone undefeated and untied at home (9-0-0 in 1991).  Emory reached a double-digit win total at home for the first time in school history.

The match also marked 'Senior Day' for Emory's 11 graduating seniors - Jonathan Laycock, Jacob Roche, Andre  Jakubowski, Jordan Edelman, Joey Howie, Marc Del Marmol, John Darsie, Patrick Carver, Erik Laney, Patrick McFarland, and Jack Eisen-Markowitz.

The Eagles take a week off from UAA play, but will be back in action in Sewanee, TN, facing the University of the South on Friday, October 24th at 7:30 PM.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY DEFEATS 16th-RANKED CASE WESTERN RESERVE; SETS UP KEY UAA MATCHUP ON SUNDAY

(Oct. 17) The Emory University Men's Soccer team, ranked ninth in Division III, defeated its second-consecutive ranked opponent on Friday, as the Eagles (12-0-0, 3-0-0 UAA) picked up a 2-1 victory over 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University (9-3-1, 1-1-1 UAA).

The Eagles' 12-0-0 start marks the first time in school history that Emory has opened a season with 12-consecutive victories.  Emory remains one of five undefeated and untied teams in Division III this season.

The game began as a defensive battle, with neither team able to break through offensively in the first half.  Emory would head to the locker room holding a narrow 6-3 advantage in shots during the game.

The second half, however, would be a much different story for both squads.  The Eagles were the first to strike, as senior Jack Eisen-Markowitz scored his second goal of the season, heading a cross from Erik Laney into the far corner of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  Case starting goalkeeper Konrad Karasek injured himself attempting to convert the save on the play, and was forced to leave the game immediately following the goal, turning over his duties to backup Ben Yabrow.

Emory's lead would not be long-lived though, as the Spartans struck back in the 57th minute, scoring on Matt Paglia's fifth goal of the season, on a perfectly executed cross from R.J. French.

With the game knotted at a goal apiece, the Eagles' veteran forwards took it upon themselves to make the difference in the match.  In the 68th-minute Emory goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock created a breakaway, clearing a ball forward to senior Patrick McFarland.  McFarland cut all the way into the Case box, before finding an open Patrick Carver for the eventual game-deciding score, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Carver's goal was his team-leading ninth of the season and the 46th of his Emory career, as the senior is now three shy of matching Matthew Levine (03C) for third-place in school history.  He also moved one point ahead of James Doran (96C) for third place in school history in career points (118), and is two shy of matching Levine for second.

Laycock and the rest of the Emory defense would shut down Case for the remainder of the match.  Laycock, improved to 12-0-0 this season with the victory, making three saves in the process.  Emory's Greg Irons, who made his first career start in goal, made one save, but did not factor in the decision after his 24 minutes played.

The victory sets up possibly the most important matchup of the entire UAA season this Sunday, as the Eagles will host the University of Rochester (N.Y.), also 3-0-0 in UAA matches, and tied with Emory for first in the conference.  Last season, the Eagles fell in Rochester, 1-0 in a double-overtime thriller, in what was eventually the conference-deciding match.  Emory will look to reverse last year's fortunes, as the Eagles will also have their 'Senior Day' ceremonies prior to the start of the game at 1:30 PM.

NO. NINE EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TO FACE TWO RANKED UAA OPPONENTS THIS WEEKEND

(Oct. 15) The ninth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer Team will face its toughest weekend of the campaign to date this week, as the Eagles will take on 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) on Friday night at 7:30 PM, and the 18th-ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.) on Sunday at 1:30 PM.

Fans can view both matches via an online webcast, which requires RealPlayer, version 10 or newer, to view.  The link will be available on the Emory Men's Soccer homepage approximately 15 minutes before the start of the match.  For more information and instructions for Emory webcasts, click here.

The two matches could potentially determine the Eagles' University Athletic Association (UAA) fate this season.  Currently, Emory and Rochester are tied for first with a 2-0-0 record in UAA matches, while Case Western is right behind the pair with a 1-0-1 record in conference play.  The UAA winner earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Emory will enter Friday's contest as one of the five remaining undefeated and untied teams in Division III, along with Montclair State University (N.J.), Trinity University (Texas), Wittenberg University (Ohio), and York College (Pa.).  The Eagles are currently 11-0-0 this season, matching the programs' 2003 season for the best start in school history.  Emory has never begun a season with 12 consecutive wins.  The Eagles are coming off a 1-0 win over 21st-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday, the team's eighth shutout through 11 games this season.

Case Western will enter Friday's contest with a 9-2-1 record, including a 3-1-1 mark in road matches this season.  The Spartans are 6-0-1 over their last seven matches, although Emory will be their first ranked opponent of the season.  Case Western is less than two seasons removed from winning a UAA Championship, as the Spartans took home the conference title during the 2006 season.  Emory is 19-1-1 all time against Case Western, including a 2-1 victory last season.  Seniors Patrick Carver and Joey Howie have each recorded a goal and an assist over their careers against the Spartans.

Rochester, the 2007 UAA Champion, will begin the weekend with an 8-1-2 record, and will play at Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) on Friday, before facing the Eagles on Sunday.  The Yellowjackets are 3-0-0 in road matches this season, and have won four-consecutive matches and six of their last seven.  Rochester is 0-1-0 this season against ranked opponents.  Last season, Emory (11-8-2 all-time against Rochester) suffered a 1-0 double-overtime loss to the Yellowjackets, in a match that would eventually decide the UAA Champion.

Prior to the start of Sunday's match, the Eagles will hold their 'Senior Day' ceremonies, as the team will honor its 11 senior players.

Emory Notes
The Eagles have won both their games over then-ranked teams this season, beating the 25th-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.) 2-0 on September 7th, and 21st-ranked Washington University (Mo.) 1-0 last weekend... The Eagles have won five of their last six games against top-25 opponents, including four-straight matches against ranked UAA teams... Emory had two UAA Athletes of the Week this week, as freshman Ben Schlang earned the nod for his offensive performance, and Jordan Edelman won the honor on the defensive side... In the latest NCAA Division III statistical rankings, Emory is currently tied for first in winning percentage, third in the Nation in both team goals against average (0.27) and shutout percentage (0.73), eighth in save percentage (0.897) and 13th in scoring offense (3.55 goals per game)... Individually, Jonathan Laycock is ranked fourth in goals against average (0.287) and 12th in save percentage (0.889), Joey Howie is 26th in assists per game (0.64), and Patrick Carver is 71st in goals per game (0.73) and 73rd in points per game (1.73).

SCHLANG'S GOAL THE DIFFERENCE IN NINTH-RANKED EMORY'S WIN OVER NO. 21 WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

(Oct. 12) Emory University freshman Ben Schlang scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute of play, lifting the ninth-ranked Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Washington University (Mo.).  The win keeps the Eagles perfect with a 11-0-0 record (2-0-0 UAA), while the Bears fell to 8-3-0 (1-1-0 UAA).

After a scoreless first half, Schlang struck at the 72:37 mark off a deflection, for the only goal in the game for either team.

The score marked the seventh goal of the season for Schlang, who now has 17 points for the campaign, second most on the squad.  Four of the freshman's seven goals have been game-winning scores, as Schlang leads the team in the category.  He has notched the game-winning goal in both of Emory's UAA contests this season.

The match proved to be a battle of two of the toughest defenses in the Nation this season.  However, while Emory's offense was able to muster 17 total shots during the match, nine of which were on goal, the Eagles' back line held Washington University to just three shots during the game, none of which were on goal.

Emory has allowed just 29 shots on goal through the first 11 games of the season, while outscoring opponents 39-3 throughout the campaign.

Schlang's goal ended a 739 minute scoreless streak for the Washington defense.  The Emory win broke-up the Bears' nine-match winning streak.

The win keeps the Eagles among six undefeated and untied teams in Division III this season.  Emory will return home next weekend for its final two matches of the regular season, starting with Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) at 7:30 PM on Friday.

IN A MEETING OF RANKED UAA TEAMS, NO. NINE EMORY TO FACE 21st-RANKED WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

(Oct. 8) The Emory University Men's Soccer team will face one of its toughest tests of the season to date this weekend, as the ninth-ranked Eagles will travel to St. Louis, MO to face 21st-ranked University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Washington University.

Emory is a perfect 10-0-0 this season, one of just seven undefeated and untied teams left in Division III this season.  The Eagles are 1-0-0 in UAA play, after a 5-1 victory over the University of Chicago (Ill.) last week.

The Eagles will face a red-hot Washington University team, as the Bears will enter Sunday's match on a seven-game winning streak, during which they have held opponents scoreless over the last 666 minutes.  Washington University is 8-2-0 overall, and 1-0-0 in UAA matches after a 1-0 win over then-10th ranked Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) last Sunday.  Emory is 6-10-6 all time against the Bears, but have won four-straight games in the series, and are 4-1-2 over the last seven match-ups.  In three career games against Washington University, Patrick McFarland and Patrick Carver have each recorded two goals and two assists.

Emory Notes:
Emory's Marc Del Marmol was named the UAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week after scoring three goals and one assist during the Eagles' two games last week... The Eagles are ranked third in the Nation in both team goals against average (0.29) and shutout percentage (0.7), and ninth in the Nation in both scoring offense (3.8 goals per game) and save percentage (0.897)... Emory's Jonathan Laycock is fourth in the country with a 0.318 goals against average, and 12th in the nation with a 0.889 save percentage, while Joey Howie is ranked 19th with 0.7 assists per match... Over the last three matches between the Eagles and the Bears, a total of nine yellow cards have been issued (seven to Emory players and two to Washington University players).

NO. NINE EMORY STAYS UNDEFEATED WITH 5-1 WIN OVER CHICAGO

(Oct. 4) After an early scare from the University of Chicago (Ill.), Emory University rattled off five unanswered goals, as the ninth-ranked Eagles defeated the Maroons 5-1 on Saturday.

The game opened at a furious pace, with each school notching a goal within the first two minutes of play.  Chicago struck first, as Alex Clifford scored his second goal of the season off a pass from Andy Dallos, to give the Maroons a lead at the 1:06 mark.

The Chicago lead, however, would not be long-lived.  Just 50 seconds later, after a stoppage of play for dangerous play set up an indirect kick from the edge of the Maroon goalkeeper's box, senior Marc Del Marmol touched the free kick to Erik Laney, who was able to put the ball into the net.

The goal was the third of the season for the senior, who, prior to this season, had not scored a goal over his Emory career.

The pace of the match would slow down considerably over the rest of the half, with the Emory defense allowing Chicago to take just one other shot the rest of the first frame.

The Eagles finally jumped ahead with just two minutes left in the first half, as Emory's Ben Schlang was able to score the go-ahead goal in the 43rd minute, off an assist from Christopher Howie.  The eventual game-winning goal gives the freshman six goals this season (second-most on the team) and three game-winning goals, which leads the squad.

Emory would add three goals in the second half to secure the victory.  Two of the scores came off the leg of Del Marmol, who now has five goals this season after beginning the year with just three career goals.

The final goal of the match was scored by Graham Dekeyser, the first of the season for the sophomore.

The five goals scored by the Eagles are the most they have scored against Chicago since the 1989 squad defeated the Maroons 6-0.  The four goal margin of victory is the best for Emory since the team won 4-0 in the 1998 season.  The Eagles improved to 15-5-2 all time against Chicago.

The win comes in the opening match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) season for the Eagles, who improved to 10-0-0 overall this season.  The University of Chicago, now 0-1-0 in UAA play, dropped to 4-4-2 overall on the campaign.  Emory, one of seven undefeated and untied teams in the Nation to begin the weekend, will travel to Washington University (Mo.) to face the Bears at 1:30 PM next Sunday.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TO OPEN ITS UAA SCHEDULE AGAINST CHICAGO

(Oct. 3) Emory University will look to continue its perfect season this weekend, as the ninth-ranked Eagles (9-0-0) will meet their first University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent this weekend in the University of Chicago (4-3-2).  The match will be held at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Saturday at 1:30 PM.

The match will be webcasted free of charge on go.emory.edu with live video and play-by-play.  The link for the webcast will be available on the Emory Men's Soccer front page approximately 15 minutes before the start of the match.

The Eagles began the week second in the Nation in both team goals against average (0.24) and save percentage (0.917).  In addition, goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock is ranked third in the Nation in goals against average (0.269) and seventh in save percentage (0.909), Patrick Carver is ranked 39th in goals per game (0.88) and 40th in points per game (2.13) and Joey Howie and Jack Eisen-Markowitz are tied for 45th in Division III with 0.63 assists per game.

Chicago, unranked in both the national and regional polls will enter Saturday's match with a 4-3-2 record.  The Eagles are 14-5-2 all-time against Chicago.  Last season, Emory defeated Chicago 3-2 in the second-overtime period, as Patrick Carver notched his second-goal of the match for the game winner.  The Maroons were picked to finish sixth in the UAA, according to the preseason coaches' poll.

NO. NINE EMORY MEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT OGLETHORPE 2-0

(Oct. 1) Emory University Men's Soccer earned another win off the strong play of its defense, as the ninth-ranked Eagles claimed a 2-0 victory over their municipal rival Oglethorpe University (Ga.).

Emory goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock was able to avert an Oglethorpe scoring threat in the 12th minute of the match.  After an Emory foul resulted in a free kick, the Stormy Petrels were able to take three quick shots on goal, but Laycock saved each one to keep the match scoreless at the time.  Those would also be the only shots on goal that the Emory defense would allow for the rest of the match.

The Eagles was able to take a 1-0 lead in the first half, after Patrick McFarland was fouled on a scoring attempt in the Oglethorpe box.  Senior Marc Del Marmol, taking the resulting penalty kick, was able to beat the Stormy Petrel goalkeeper to put Emory out in front.  The goal was the third of the season for Del Marmol, a career high, and his third in the last three Emory matches.

The score of the match would remain 1-0 until the final minute of the second half, when Patrick Carver scored off of a Patrick McFarland throw-in, that was redirected by Joey Howie, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead, and some late security in the match.  The goal was the team-leading eighth of the season for Carver.

The story of the game for the Eagles, however, was once again its tremendous defensive play.  The team lowered its goals against average to 0.22 this season, tying the squad with second-ranked York College (Pa.) for the lowest in Division III.  Emory's 0.926 save percentage is also the best in the Nation this season.  The shutout was the seventh in nine games for the squad.

Emory improved to 9-0-0 with the victory, marking the sixth time in school history (and the fifth time in the last six years) that the Eagles have opened a season with nine-consecutive wins.  Oglethorpe dropped to 2-6-2 with the loss, and 1-2-0 at the Woodruff P.E. Center this season.  Emory is now 26-0-1 all time against the Stormy Petrels.

The road will begin to get more difficult for the Eagles this weekend, as the squad will begin their University Athletic Association (UAA) play this Saturday.  In the first conference match of the season, Emory will host the University of Chicago (Ill.) at 1:30 PM, in the final match of a six-game home stand.

EMORY'S LANEY EARNS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONOR; MEN'S SOCCER STATISTICAL UPDATE

(Oct. 1) Emory University's Erik Laney was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Defensive Player of the Week for Men's Soccer, for his performance during Emory's two matches last week.

The senior played over 158 minutes in the Emory backfield over the two matches, holding opponents scoreless, and allowing opposing teams to take just three shots on goal.  Laney and the Emory defense have allowed just two goals through eight games this season.  Laney becomes the fourth different player on the team to earn a UAA Player of the Week honor, joining forward Patrick Carver, backfielder Jordan Edelman, and goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock.

The Eagles are also currently ranked highly among Division III teams in a number of statistical categories.  Emory as a team is currently ranked second in the Nation in both goals against average (0.24) and save percentage (0.917).  In addition, the Eagles have the fourth-best shutout percentage in the country (0.75) and the 12th-best scoring offense (3.88 goals per match).

Individually, Emory goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock is ranked third in the nation in goals against average (0.269) and seventh in save percentage (0.909).  Senior forward Patrick Carver is 39th in goals per game (0.88) and 40th in points per game (2.13), while Joey Howie and Jack Eisen-Markowitz are each ranked 45th in Division III with 0.63 assists per game.

Emory, at 8-0-0 this season, is one of seven undefeated teams remaining in Division III, joining Baldwin-Wallace College, Hobart College, Montclair State University, Trinity University, Wittenberg University, and York College.

NINTH-RANKED EAGLES TO HOST OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY ON WEDNESDAY

(Oct. 1) The Emory University Men's Soccer Team will look to extend its season-opening eight-game winning streak, as the Eagles will host Oglethorpe University (Ga.) on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.  The game will be the Eagles' final match before the start of University Athletic Association (UAA) play.

Emory will enter the match with an 8-0-0 record this season, marking the fourth-consecutive year that the Eagles have started 8-0-0, and the fifth time in the last six years.  Last week, the Eagles recorded two shutout victories, defeating Piedmont College (Ga.) 4-0 on Wednesday, and Maryville College (Tenn.) 1-0 on Friday.  Friday's game marked the first time this season that the Eagles have scored less than two goals in a game.  Senior Marc Del Marmol led all Emory scorers last week with a pair of goals, while Joey Howie, Bryan Fedner, and Ben Schlang each scored a goal over the two games.  The Eagles are ranked ninth in the Nation, and second in the South Region.

Oglethorpe will enter Wednesday's match with a 2-5-2 record through nine games this season, and a 0-1-1 record in neutral matches.  The Stormy Petrels have already played two neutral games at the Woodruff P.E. Center this season, while participating in the season-opening Sonny Carter Invitational, going 1-1-0.   In a series which started during the 1982 season, Emory has never lost a match to the Stormy Petrels.

Emory will begin conference play this weekend, hosting the University of Chicago (Ill.) at 1:30 PM on Saturday, for the first UAA match of the season.  Saturday's game will also conclude a six-game home stand for the Eagles.

NINTH-RANKED MEN'S TOPS MARYVILLE IN A 1-0 DEFENSIVE BATTLE

(Sep. 26) The ninth-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer team relied on its stalwart defense and timely scoring to improve to 8-0-0 on the 2008 campaign, with a 1-0 over Maryville College (Tenn.) on Friday night.

The lone goal of the match came late in the first half, as freshman Ben Schlang was able to take possession of the ball from the Maryville defender in the Scots' box, launching a shot for his fifth goal of the season.  The goal in the 42nd minute was not only all the Emory defense would need for the rest of the game, but all the defense would get.

Emory's backfield responded accordingly, holding the Scots to six shots during the game, only two of which were on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock finished the match with one save, earning his third complete-game shutout of the season.

Maryville's defense proved tough for the Eagles, who were held to under two goals for the first time this season.   Emory's 14 shots and six shots on goal were both the lowest totals of the season for the squad.

With the win, Emory improved to 6-0-0 at home this season.  The Eagles have won 14-consecutive regular season home games, dating back to the 2006 season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, October 1st, hosting Oglethorpe University (Ga.) at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

DEL MARMOL SCORES TWO, AS NO. NINE EMORY MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS PIEDMONT 4-0

(Sep. 24) Emory University kept its season-opening win streak intact Wednesday night, as the Eagles defeated Piedmont College (Ga.) 4-0 at the Woodruff P.E. Center, on the back of a two-goal performance for senior midfielder Marc Del Marmol.  The win brings Emory's 2008 ledger to 7-0-0, while Piedmont dropped to 4-5-0.

It was another dominant performance for the Eagles, who were able to control the ball for the majority of the match.  Emory was able to muster 30 shots during the game, 20 of which were on goal, compared to just two shots for the Lions.  Piedmont goalkeeper Brian Gaid was forced to make 14 saves during the game.

The Eagles scored early in the match, taking a 1-0 lead off Marc Del Marmol's first goal of the season, assisted by Patrick Carver in the 17th minute.  The goal would be the only one of the first half for either team.

The Eagles' offense would explode in the second half, beginning with a goal in the 57th minute for Joey Howie, his third of the season.  Just over four minutes later, Del Marmol would add his second goal of the match, scoring on a header off a cross from Joey Howie.  Freshman Bryan Fedner would round off the game with his first collegiate goal, scoring in the 74th minute to secure the victory for Emory.

The multiple-goal game for Del Marmol was the fifth time this season that an Emory player has recorded two or more goals in a game, and was not only the first multiple-goal game of the senior's four-year career as an Eagle, but marks the first time that he has recorded more than one goal in a season.  The game was the first start of the season for Del Marmol, after missing the first three games of the year due to injury, and coming off the bench during the Eagles' previous three matches.

Goalkeepers Jonathan Laycock and Greg Irons combined for the shutout, the squad's fifth of the season, with Laycock making the only Eagle save of the match.  Emory has now outscored its opponents 30-2 through seven matches this season.

The Eagles have now won 13-consecutive regular-season matches at the Woodruff P.E. Center, dating back to the 2006 season.  Emory will play the fourth match of a six match home stand on Friday, facing Maryville College (Tenn.) at 7:00 PM.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER TO CONTINUE HOMESTAND WITH MATCHES AGAINST PIEDMONT, MARYVILLE

(Sep. 23) The Emory University Men's Soccer team will look to keep its perfect season intact, as the Eagles will take on two regional opponents this week, facing Piedmont College (Ga.) on Wednesday and Maryville College (Tenn.) on Friday.

The Eagles will host both games at the Woodruff P.E. Center.  For fans who cannot attend, and would like to follow all of the action, Wednesday's game will be broadcasted via an online webcast, with live video and audio.  The link to the webcast will be posted on www.go.emory.edu at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the match.  Fans will be able to listen to Friday's game on Teamline.

Emory will begin the week with a 6-0-0 record, marking the team's fourth-consecutive 6-0 start, and the eighth in school history.  The Eagles are ranked ninth in the Nation and second in the South Region according to the latest NSCAA poll.  Emory is coming off a 3-1 victory over Greensboro College (N.C.), during which Christopher Howie, Patrick Carver, and Jack Eisen-Markowitz each scored goals.

Piedmont will enter Wednesday's 7:00 PM contest with a 4-4-0 record for the 2008 campaign, and unranked in both the national and regional polls.  Three of the Lions' losses this season have come in overtime matches.  The Eagles are 8-2-0 all time against the Lions, including an 8-0 victory last season.  Senior forward Patrick McFarland has scored five goals and one assist in his three-career games against Piedmont.

Maryville will enter Friday's 7:00 PM match with a 5-1-0 record this season, and ranked 10th in the South Region.  The Eagles are 11-8-0 all time against Maryville, including three-consecutive wins against the Scots.  This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2004 season.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY COMES FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT GREENSBORO, 3-1

(Sep. 20) Emory University's Patrick Carver broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 72nd minute, as the ninth-ranked Eagles were able to come from behind to defeat Greensboro College (N.C.) 3-1.

Emory trailed early in the match, as Greensboro's Frederik Edeland scored his fourth goal of the season in the 13th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead.  However, it would not take long for Emory to answer back, as sophomore Christopher Howie banged home a rebound off a Jordan Edleman header to even the match at a goal apiece.

The match would remain tied throughout the rest of the first half, and for the first 26 minutes of the second half, before a foul against Greensboro would lead to a Patrick Carver free kick from just outside the box.  Carver would bend the free kick into the upper-far corner of the net, just out of the reach of the Greensboro goalkeeper, for the senior's team leading seventh goal of the season.

The goal was the 44th of Carver's career, as the 2007 all-American is now tied with Derrick Beare (84C) for fourth in school history.

After Greensboro's Andrew Clark was ejected in the 75th minute for his second yellow card of the match, the Eagles were able to tack on an insurance goal.  Senior Jack Eisen-Markowitz notched his first goal of the season, off assists from Edelman and Joey Howie

Despite the tight score, Emory remained in control for much of the match.  The Eagles outshot Greensboro 10-3 in the first half, and 11-3 in the second frame, forcing the Pride goalkeeper, Kurt Gardiner, to make 12 saves during the match.  Emory has now outscored opponents 26-2 through the first six games of the season.

With the win, Emory improved to 6-0-0 on the season.  The Eagles will continue a six-game home stand on Wednesday, when the squad will host Piedmont College at 7:00 PM.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY TO REVIST RIVALRY WITH GREENSBORO ON SATURDAY

(Sep. 18) One of the top men's soccer rivalries in the South Region will be continued on Saturday, as Emory University will host Greensboro College (N.C.) at the Woodruff P.E. Center.  This will be the 21st time the two teams have met, which includes five overtime matches and three NCAA Tournament battles.

Saturday's match will be webcasted free of charge on go.emory.edu with live video and play-by-play.  The link for the webcast will be available on the Emory Men's Soccer front page approximately 15 minutes before the start of the match.

The Eagles will enter the match undefeated on the season with a 5-0-0 record.  Emory is ranked ninth in the Nation and second in the South Region, according to the latest NSCAA poll.  The squad is coming off a 3-0 victory over Covenant College (Ga.), during which Christopher Howie, Patrick Carver, and Jacob Roche each scored goals.  The Eagles have now outscored opponents 23-1 this season, and outshot opposing teams 106-33.

The Pride are 3-2-1 through their first six games of the 2008 campaign, and have won three of their past four matches.  Despite being unranked in the region, Greensboro is coming off a 4-0 win over Guilford College last Saturday, and the team has outscored its opponents 13-9 this season.

Last year, the Eagles escaped Greensboro with a 2-1 overtime win, as Patrick McFarland notched a 'golden goal' against the Pride.  Carver has recorded a goal and three assists over the three previous meetings between the two teams.

The two teams will be facing each other for the 17th-consecutive season.  Of the previous 20 meetings, at least one of the teams has been ranked nationally 13 times, and both teams have been ranked in four of the matchups.  The Pride initially dominated the matchup, winning seven of the first eight matches, but more recently, the Eagles have won two-straight and four of the last six over Greensboro.  Overall, Emory is just 8-12 all-time against the Pride.  Emory and Greensboro have met three times in the NCAA Tournament, with the Pride winning each of the three postseason games.  There have been five overtime matches between the teams, with Greensboro holding a 3-2-0 advantage.

Perhaps the most meaningful match of the series for the Eagles came during the 1998 season, when Emory hosted Greensboro on October 13th.  With the Eagles trailing 4-2 with just 23 minutes remaining, All-American Ahmed Mohyledin scored two goals (including the game winner with less than two minutes remaining) and assisted on another to give Emory its first victory over the Pride since 1993.  Mohyeldin finished the 5-4 win with four goals and one assist.

EMORY MEN'S SOCCER BLANKS COVENANT COLLEGE

(Sept. 12) -- The No. 9-ranked Emory University men's soccer team received scoring from three different players on Friday evening as it recorded a 3-0 win over Covenant College in a game played at the Woodruff Center Soccer Field on the Emory campus.  The win lifted the Eagles record to 5-0 while Covenant slipped to 1-2-1.

Sophomore Christopher Howie (Savannah, GA) scored the game-winning goal early in the contest with his first marker of the campaign coming at the 10:49 mark, the only scoring that took place in the first half. Senior Patrick Carver (Springfield, MO) added some insurance when his sixth goal of the season upped the score to 2-0 at 59:39.  Senior Jacob Roche (Cincinnati, OH) closed out the scoring with his first career tally coming on a penalty kick at 86:25.

Senior Jonathan Laycock (Burnley, England) was the beneficiary of solid play by his defensive corps and registered two saves en route to his second solo shutout of the season.  His counterpart, John Eger of Covenant, concluded the evening with seven stops. Emory enjoyed a decided 16-4 edge in shot attempts.

Emory returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when it hosts Greensboro College in a 6:00 p.m. start.

NINTH-RANKED MEN'S SOCCER LOOKS TO STAY PERFECT AGAINST COVENANT COLLEGE

(Sep. 12) Emory University will look to extend its four-match winning streak to start the season, as the Eagles will face Covenant College (Ga.) on Friday at 7:00 PM at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Emory University has jumped out to a 4-0-0 start to its 2008 campaign.  After winning both of their games at the Sonny Carter Invitational during the first weekend of the season, the Eagles swept a pair of games at the Blue Marlin/ adidas Classic in Virginia Beach, VA last weekend.  On Friday, the Eagles defeated Virginia Wesleyan College (ranked 14th to start the season) 2-1 in double-overtime, as freshman Ben Schlang notched a 'golden goal' in the final minute of the match.  On Sunday, Emory's Jonathan Laycock recorded his first-career shutout in goal, as the Eagles defeated the then-25th-ranked University of Mary Washington 2-0.  Emory has now outscored its opponents 20-1 over its first four games of the season.

Laycock was named the Men's Soccer Defensive UAA Athlete of the Week for his performance last week.  He becomes the third member of the team to earn a UAA Athlete of the Week honor this season.

Covenant College will enter the match with a 1-1-1 record through three 2008 matches.  The Scots are coming off their first win of the season, as the squad beat Bluefield College (Va.) 2-0 last Saturday.  Covenant, a NAIA school, was picked to win the Appalachian Athletic Conference this season.  Covenant is coached by John Miglarese, who is assisted by Thomas Clark, Robbie Sweet, and David Gambrell.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the 1983 season.  The Eagles and the Scots have played to two ties in the two previous meetings.

NINTH-RANKED MEN'S SOCCER REMAINS PERFECT WITH 2-0 WIN OVER MARY WASHINGTON

(Sep. 7) Senior midfielder Joey Howie struck in the fourth minute of the match, and senior defender Erik Laney notched his second-career goal, as the ninth-ranked Eagles defeated the 25th-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.) 2-0 at the Blue Marlin/ adidas Classic in Virginia Beach, VA.

Howie's goal came at the 3:38 mark of the match, off an assist from Patrick Carver, to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.  The goal was the second of the year for Howie, who now has seven points on the campaign.  Emory would remain in control throughout the first half of the match, outshooting Mary Washington 12-4 during the frame, including a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Laney would notch his second goal in the last three games during the 71st minute of play to secure the victory for the Eagles.  Freshman Ben Schlang, coming off his game-winning goal on Friday, would pick up an assist on the Laney goal.

Senior Jonathan Laycock played all 90 minutes in goal, making six saves for his first complete-game shutout of the season.  During his 330 minutes in goal this year, Laycock has recorded a 0.27 goals against average and a 4-0-0 record.

The win brings Emory's record to 4-0-0 on the season, while Mary Washington falls to 2-1-0 on the campaign.  The Eagles will return home to begin a six-match home-stand at the Woodruff P.E. Center, starting with Covenant College (Ga.) at 7:00 PM on Friday.

NO. NINE EMORY DEFEATS VIRGINIA WESLEYAN IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

(Sep. 5) Emory University's Ben Schlang scored a 'golden goal' in the 119th minute, as the ninth-ranked Eagles came from behind to defeat Virginia Wesleyan College 2-1 in two overtimes.

With just 1:48 remaining in the contest, the freshman struck with his fourth goal of the season with a header off a free kick from defenseman Jordan Edelman.  Edelman's assist was the senior's first of the season.

Emory fell behind early, as the Eagles allowed their first goal of the season as the Marlins' Brandon Massie in the 30th minute of the match.  Emory would trail 1-0 headed into the locker room for the half.

The Emory defense would take part in the Eagles' offense for the team's first goal of the game as well.  Off a Jack Eisen-Markowitz corner kick, and a Patrick McFarland assist, senior backfielder Andre Jakubowski headed a ball into the net to even the score at 1-1.  It would be Jakubowski's first goal of the season, and the fourth of the defender's career.  Eisen-Markowitz and McFarland are tied for the team lead with four assists each through three games this season.

The game would remain tied through the rest of regulation, and through most of the two overtime periods, until Schlang struck with the clock quickly ticking down.

Schlang is second on the squad with four goals and 10 points this season, behind senior forward Patrick Carver in both categories.

The Eagles set the pace for much of the game, outshooting the Marlins 19-11, and taking seven corner kicks to the Marlins three.  Emory has now outshot opponents 67-18 this season, and outscored opponents 18-1 through three games.

On the defensive end, senior Jonathan Laycock played the entire game (118 minutes and 12 seconds) in goal to improve his record to 3-0-0 this season.  Despite allowing his first goal of the season, Laycock converted five saves (three more than he recorded in the Eagles' two previous games), including two key saves over a five-second span in the final overtime period.

Friday's game was significant for other reasons besides the final result.  Not only was it the first meeting between the two programs, but it marked the return of Emory Head Coach Sonny Travis to the school where he served as the Head Soccer Coach and Athletic Director prior to arriving at Emory last season.  Travis now holds a 19-3-0 record since taking over the Emory program.

With the win, Emory remained perfect with a 3-0-0 record in 2008, while Virginia Wesleyan, ranked 14th in the NSCAA preseason poll, dropped to 1-2-0.  The Eagles will look to conclude their time at the Blue Marlin/ adidas Classic on Sunday at 1:00 PM, against the 25th-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.).  The game will be weather permitting, as Tropical Storm Hannah is scheduled into the Virginia Beach area on Saturday.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY TO BE TESTED AT BLUE MARLIN/ADIDAS CLASSIC

(Sep. 4) The ninth-ranked Emory University Men's soccer team will receive its first true test of the season this weekend, as the Eagles will take on Virginia Wesleyan College, and the 25th-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.) at the Blue Marlin/adidas Classic in Virginia Beach, VA.

Emory opened its season with a pair of dominating 8-0 wins over Guilford College (N.C.) and Methodist University (N.C.) at the Sonny Carter Invitational.  Senior forward Patrick Carver earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors, scoring five goals and adding an assist during the two contests, while freshman forward Ben Schlang scored three additional goals and two assists.  Besides Carver and Schlang, Emory's Jordan Edelman, Joey Howie, and Christopher Howie each earned all-tournament honors.  In addition, Carver and Edelman were named the University Athletic Association's (UAA) Offensive and Defense Athletes of the Week for men's soccer.  The Eagles are ranked second in the South Region, according to the latest NSCAA poll.

Besides being a key game for the Eagles, Emory's match against Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday will mark Head Coach Sonny Travis' return to the school where he coached and served as the Athletic Director, prior to coming to Emory.  The Marlins will enter the match with a 1-1-0 record this season, and are ranked seventh in the South Region in the NSCAA poll.  Virginia Wesleyan fell out of the nation poll after being ranked 14th in the preseason rankings.  This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and the Marlins.

On Sunday, the Eagles will face Mary Washington, the 25th-ranked team in the nation and fourth-ranked team in the South Region.  The University of Mary Washington will enter the weekend with a 2-0-0 record this season.  This will be the second meeting between the two programs, with the two teams splitting the previous matches.

NO. 13 EMORY CLAIMS THE SONNY CARTER INVITATIONAL CUP WITH 8-0 WIN OVER METHODIST

(Aug. 31) The Emory University Men's Soccer team, ranked 13th in the Nation, recorded its second-straight dominating victory, as the Eagles picked up an 8-0 win over Methodist University (N.C.).  The win clinches the 2008 Sonny Carter Invitational for the Emory squad.

The Eagles' first goal came from an unusual source, as senior defender Erik Laney notched his first Emory goal in 36 games played.  The senior took a free kick for Emory from just outside the box, after an initial fake from senior Patrick Carver.

The fake would be the last of the day for Carver, however, as the senior would notch two goals of his own, including one just 44 seconds after Laney's.  Carver now has five goals and an assist through the first two Emory games, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Sonny Carter Invitational.

Carver added an assist later in the game, and now has 11 points this season.  The senior now has 107 career points, moving him past Dennis Jerkunica ('92) for fifth-place in school history, and just two points behind Derrick Beare ('84) for fourth.  Carver is tied with Jerkunica for fifth in school history with 42 career goals.

Freshman Zach Samuels would add two late goals for the Eagles for the first two scores of his Emory career.  Other goal scorers for Emory included freshman Ben Schlang, senior Patrick McFarland, and sophomore Michael Scannapieco.

"We gave it our all, and played very well for this early in the season," said Emory Head Coach Sonny Travis.

Emory outshot Methodist 25-5 during the game, and held a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Emory has outscored its first two opponents of the season by a combined score of 16-0.

Emory improved to 2-0-0 on the season, and finished ahead of Methodist (1-1-0) at the Sonny Carter Invitational.  The tournament in played in honor of the former Emory soccer player, who later became a professional soccer player, doctor and astronaut before passing away in a 1991 plane crash.

"The Sonny Carter Invitational is a great way to honor one of our own, who we tragically lost at too early an age," said Travis.

Besides Carver's MVP honor, defender Jordan Edelman, midfielders Joey Howie and Christopher Howie, and forward Ben Schlang earned all-tournament honors.

Emory will be back in action on Friday, September 5th, when the team will be tested on the road by Virginia Wesleyan University (Va.), the 14th-ranked team in the nation.

CARVER BREAKS 100-CAREER POINT MARK IN 13th-RANKED EMORY'S 8-0 WIN OVER GUILFORD

(Aug. 30) Emory University's Patrick Carver became just the seventh player in the history of the Men's Soccer program to score 100-career points, as the senior netted a hat trick during the Eagles' 8-0 season-opening win over Guilford College (N.C.) at the Sonny Carter Invitational.

Carver scored each of his three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game, including the eventual game winner at the 4:18 mark, off an assist from newcomer Christopher Howie.  The game-winning goal was the 15th of Carver's career, the most in school history.

After freshman Ben Schlang struck with a goal in his first collegiate game at the 20:48 mark, Carver would come back with his second of the game just 33 seconds later, off an assist from Schlang.  Carver would score again eight minutes later to cap off his day.

Schlang would later add a second goal in the second half, giving him five points in his debut for Emory.  Also scoring goals for the Eagles would be senior Joey Howie, sophomore Adam Waxman, and sophomore Frank HapakChristopher Howie recorded three assists on the day, while senior Jack Eisen-Markowitz added two.

Senior Jonathan Laycock and sophomore Greg Irons combined for the shutout in goal, with some help from the Emory backfield.  The Eagles' defense allowed the Quakers to take just two shots during the game, only one of which was on goal.

Carver is the first Emory player to breach the 100-point plateau since forward Matthew Levine finished his career with 120 points in 2003.  Carver's six points in the match give him 102 for his career, and tie him with Scott Cahoon ('90) for sixth on the Eagles' all-time scoring list.  Carver also tied Cahoon for sixth with 40-career goals, as the senior recorded the third 'hat trick' of his career, and the first since his freshman year.

The win for 13th-ranked Emory puts the Eagles' in the driver's seat at the Sonny Carter Invitational.  Emory will finish the tournament on Sunday, with a 1:30 PM match against Methodist University (N.C.).

13th-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER HAS HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR 2008

(Aug. 27) By all accounts, Sonny Travis' first year as the Head Coach of the Emory Men's Soccer team was a successful one, both personally, and for his team.  Travis became just the 27th coach in NCAA Division III history to win 300-career games, while helping his new squad to a 16-3-0 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.  However, it might be the Eagles' last-minute, tough-luck loss to the University of Redlands (Calif.) during last year's NCAA Tournament that will push Travis' veteran Emory squad to take the next step forward in 2008.

"I know [the loss] fuels me, and I believe it is going to fuel the senior class especially, because they know this is it and they can't have any regrets," said Travis.  "They have to go as hard as they can this year, and realize every game is important."

20 of the 28 players on the team's 2008 roster have at least a year of experience in an Emory uniform, including 11 players who will be entering their senior season.

"Knowing these guys from last year, we can take them a step further because of their experience," said Travis.  "We also have some good underclassmen that are just waiting for their chance to start.  I think the team depth is going to be excellent."

Headlining Emory's offense will be returning first team all-American and University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Valuable Player Patrick Carver.  The senior forward led the team with 16 goals and 41 points last season, and currently sits eighth on the Eagles' career scoring list with 94 points.  Emory's co-captain is just four points shy of becoming the seventh Eagle, and the first since Matthew Levine in 2003, to break the 100-career point mark.

Carver will once again be partnered with senior forward Patrick McFarland, who paced the team with 12 assists last season, to go along with his 12 goals.  Sophomore Michael Scannapieco, who scored five goals in 2007, along with freshman Ben Schlang and junior Gary Smith will provide depth to the Eagles fast-attacking offense.

The Eagles will bring back three starting midfielders in 2008, as Joey Howie, Marc Del Marmol, and Jack Eisen-Markowitz are all returning for their senior seasons.  Howie finished third on the team with 17 points last season, while Eisen-Markowitz added 12 points of his own.  Del Marmol, an all-UAA and South Region second team honoree, will once again look to assist the Eagles' backfield at the defensive midfield position.  Likely to fill the remaining midfield position will be sophomore transfer Christopher Howie (younger brother of Joey), who comes to Emory after a season at Division I Georgia State University.  Senior John Darsie, junior Sutton Freedman, and sophomore Graham Dekeyser will provide experience off the bench, while freshmen Bryan Fedner, Zach Samuels, and Nico Dalton will look to make an impact during their first year of the squad.

Emory's backfield will consist of a veteran core of players as well.  Seniors Jordan Edelman and Andre Jakubowski, both all-UAA honorees in 2007, will anchor the squad which finished 26th in the country in goals against average (0.67) last year.  Two more seniors, Erik Laney and Jacob Roche, will play key roles in the backfield as well, after each started 18 games for the Eagles last season.  Sophomores Adam Waxman, Jake Graetz, and Frank Hapak, along with junior Phillip Andreae and freshman Viva Nguyen also figure to be contributing factors in what could be a stifling unit for opposing offenses.

Perhaps Emory's largest hole to fill will be at goalkeeper, where the Eagles will lose two-year starter Keith Meehan, who finished his career in 2007 with the lowest goals-against average in school history.  However, senior Jonathan Laycock, who transferred from Division I Mercer University (Ga.) prior to the 2007 season, will look to step in and fill Meehan's shoes, following his 50 shutout minutes in goal last year.  Backing him up will be sophomore Greg Irons (50 shutout minutes in 2007), along with freshman Trenton Spindler.

Expectations are high for the Eagles squad in 2008, as Emory was the top-ranked team in the UAA's Preseason Coaches' Poll, in addition to be ranked 13th in the Nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll.  However, with experience all across the field and depth on its bench, Emory could be primed to fulfill, and maybe exceed, those expectations come November.

13th-RANKED EMORY MEN'S SOCCER WINS EXHIBITION OVER MERCER

(Aug. 21) The Emory Men's Soccer Team came away with a victory in its first organized game of the season, as the Eagles won a 1-0 match against Mercer University (Ga.).

The Eagles lone goal came in the 57th minute from sophomore forward Michael Scannapieco, with assists from sophomore Frank Hapak, and senior Joey Howie.  Senior goalkeeper Jonathan Laycock played the entire game in goal, converting three saves during the shutout.

The Eagles will play their second and final exhibition game on Sunday, against Berry College (Ga.) at the Woodruff P.E. Center.  Emory, ranked 13th in the NSCAA Division III Preseason Poll, will begin its regular season on Saturday, August 30th, at home against Guilford College (N.C.).
