2012 Emory Men's Soccer Athletes of the Week

    Emory University center back Alex Scott played all 180 minutes of two NCAA Division III Championship games last weekend, helping the Eagles reach the second round of the tournament. During Thursday night’s 4-1 win over Roanoke College in the first round, Scott and the Eagles’ defense held the Maroons to one goal on just five shots, only three of which were on goal. In Sunday’s 3-0 loss to top-ranked Messiah College, the Eagles’ defense limited the Falcons to nine shots, including four on goal, becoming the first team to hold Messiah to less than 10 shots since the 2009 National Championship game, and the first team to outshoot Messiah since the start of the 2011 season. Emory finished its 2012 season with an overall record of 11-7-2.

    Emory University senior co-captain Andrew Natalino set a program record for goals scored in an NCAA Tournament game during the Eagles’ 4-1 first-round victory at Roanoke College. Natalino scored a pair of goals against Roanoke, including the eventual game-winning goal, and assisted on the first goal of the game to lead the Eagles to the win. He finished the contest with a game-high four shots, three of which were on goal. During Sunday’s second round game at top-ranked Messiah College, a 3-0 Emory loss, the forward was tied for the team lead with two shots, including one on goal. Natalino finished the season with the team lead with 14 goals and 31 points, and ended his collegiate career ranked 11th in school history with 32 goals and 15th with 75 points. Emory, a University Athletic Association (UAA) co-champion, ended the year with a 11-7-2 record.

    Emory University senior David Garofalo played all 90 minutes of the Eagles 1-0 shutout win over sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, helping the team clinch a share of the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. The Eagles’ co-captain was the leader of an Emory backline that limited Carnegie to just seven shots, only two of which were on goal. Garofalo has been a leading contributor to the Eagles’ six shutouts this season, and the team’s 1.27 goals-against average. The Eagles finished the regular season with a 10-6-1 record and a 4-2-1 mark in UAA games.

    Emory University freshman Sebastian Hardington scored the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship clinching goal during the Eagles 1-0 upset win over sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. Hardington tapped in the game’s only goal in the 72nd minute of action, breaking a scoreless tie with his first collegiate goal. The score not only gave the Eagles a win in their season finale, but allowed Emory to clinch a share of the UAA Title, the seventh in the program’s history and first since the 2008 season. Hardington and the Eagles finished the 2012 regular season with a 10-6-2 record, including a 4-2-1 record in UAA games.

    Emory University sophomore Michael Rheaume scored the ‘golden goal’ in the Eagles’ double-overtime win against New York University that kept the team in the running for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Rheaume scored a goal on an Eagles’ counter attack in the 101st minute of the game, burying a cross from senior Andrew Natalino inside the far post. The goal was his second of the season, and his first career ‘golden goal.’ Rheaume and the Eagles improved to 9-6-2 overall this season, and to 3-2-2 in overtime games. The Eagles are also 3-2-1 in UAA games, and are one game out of first place in the conference with one game left to play.

    Emory University goalkeeper Abe Hannigan played a key role in the Eagles’ 1-0 double overtime win over New York University on Sunday. Hannigan made three saves in the shutout, his second of the season, including a diving stop during the first overtime that preserved the scoreless tie, allowing Emory to win the game in the second overtime period. The freshman also made one save during the Eagles’ 3-1 loss to #17 Brandeis on Friday night. Hannigan improved to 7-3-1 on the season with a 1.28 goals-against average and a .635 save percentage. The win on Sunday kept the Eagles, who are 9-6-2 overall this season, within reach of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with one game remaining in the regular season.

    Emory University sophomore Dylan Price scored the ‘golden goal’ during the Eagles’ 4-3 overtime victory over Covenant College on Friday night. Price scored the game winner on a header off a cross from Jeffrey Cochran in the 97th minute of play. The forward has now scored three career ‘golden goals,’ the second-most in school history. He is both the University Athletic Association (UAA) and team leader with 11 goals and six game-winning goals (one shy of the school single-season record), in addition to leading all Eagles with 25 points. Emory improved to 8-0-0 in games where Price scores a goal this season. The win brought the Eagles’ ledger on the campaign to 8-5-2, and Emory currently stands in a four-way tie for first place in the UAA with a 2-1-1 record in league play.

    Emory University senior Alex Scott scored two goals, including the game winner, during the Eagles’ 5-2 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Friday night. Scott headed in a corner kick just three minutes into the start of play in the game, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. He extended the Eagles’ lead to 3-1 in the 29th minute with another header goal, this time coming off a long throw in. The center back played all 90 minutes of the game, helping to limit the Spartans to just seven shots, only four of which were on goal. During the Eagles’ 1-1 double overtime tie with Rochester on Sunday, Scott played all 110 minutes, holding Rochester to five shots on goal. He also took two shots, one of which was on frame. Scott has helped defense record a 1.22 goals-against average this season, while scoring three goals of his own. The Eagles, in first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 2-1-1 league record, stand at 7-5-2 overall in 2012.

    Emory University senior David Garofalo assisted on four goals during two games last weekend, including a school-record three assists on Friday night. During the Eagles’ 5-2 win over Case Western Reserve University, Garofalo became the 17th player in Emory history to assist on three goals in a game, with two coming off corner kicks, and the other on a long pass. He picked up his fourth assist of the weekend on Sunday, as Andrew Jones scored off his corner kick in the 86th minute to force a 1-1 tie with Rochester. In addition, during his 168 minutes played, he helped hold the two conference opponents to 13 shots and seven shots on goal. This season, the co-captain leads all UAA players in assists in conference play, and is the team leader and third in the UAA with six total assists during the campaign. Garofalo and the Eagles are 7-5-2 this season, including a 2-1-1 mark in league play, good for first in the UAA.

    Emory University senior Andrew Natalino scored a pair of goals during the Eagles’ 5-2 win over Case Western Reserve University on Friday night. Natalino’s first score of the game came in the 47th minute, as the senior headed in a corner kick to extend the Eagles’ lead to 4-1. Just over six minutes later, he struck again, this time launching a shot into the back of the net following a pair of passes from teammates. Natalino led all players with three shots and two shots on goal in the game. Despite not scoring in Sunday’s 1-1 tie with the University of Rochester, the senior co-captain led all players with four shots in the contest. This season, Natalino is Emory’s top scorer with 11 goals and 23 points, and leads all University Athletic Association players in goals, both during the overall season and in conference play. His performance this year has led Emory to a first-place tie in the UAA with a 2-1-1 conference record.

    Emory University senior co-captain David Garofalo led an Eagles’ defense that allowed just four shots, only two of which were on goal, during a 1-0 loss at Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday afternoon. Garofalo played all 90 minutes of the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest, holding Washington to just one score on the day, and limiting the Bears to just one shot in the second half. The outside back also took three shots of his own during the game, one of which was on goal. Garofalo has recorded a pair of assists this season, and has helped Emory’s defense record a 1.19 goals-against average this season, while outshooting opponents 223-118. The Eagles are 6-5-1 overall in 2012, and are tied for fourth in the UAA with a 1-1-0 conference record.

    Emory University sophomore Carl Credle scored a goal in both of the team’s games last week, including the game-winning ‘golden goal’ in the Eagles’ 4-3 double-overtime win against the 23rd-ranked University of Chicago on Saturday. Credle scored his first career ‘golden goal’ on a header with just 26 seconds left in the game against the Maroons, lifting the Eagles to the victory in their first University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the season. Earlier in the week, he scored the third goal of the game for Emory in a 3-0 win at the University of the South in the 62nd minute of play. Credle led the Eagles in shots and shots on goal in both games, and is now third on the squad with three goals this season. His performance has helped Emory to four-straight victories, as the Eagles improved to 6-4-1 on the season and to 1-0-0 in UAA play.

    Emory University sophomore Dylan Price scored four goals in two Emory games last week, helping the Eagles to a pair of victories. Price scored the first three goals for the Eagles in their 5-0 win at Birmingham-Southern College on Thursday for the first hat trick of his collegiate career, and the 37th in the program’s history. It also marked his second multiple-goal game of the season, and the third of his career. The forward struck again on Saturday, scoring the game-winning goal in the 14th minute of the Eagles’ 4-0 win over Millsaps College. Price has scored the game-winning goal in each of Emory’s wins this season, and his four game-winning goals are the most by a University Athletic Association (UAA) player this season. He also ranks third in the conference in both goals (seven) and points (15) this season. Price and the Eagles improved to 4-4-1 on the season with the two wins last week.

    Sophomore Noah Rosen anchored an Emory defense that recorded two shutouts in as many games last week. Rosen played all 180 minutes of the two contests, limiting opponents to a combined five shots on goal, and 13 total shots. During a 5-0 win at Birmingham-Southern College on Thursday, the center back helped hold the Panthers to just seven shots, only three of which were on goal. He followed that performance by helping the Eagles to a 4-0 win over Millsaps College on Saturday, during which he kept the Majors without a shot in the first half, and to just six shots for the game, only two of which were on goal. Rosen has played in eight games this season, making six starts, and has been a key member of a defense that has recorded a 1.18 goals-against average and three shutouts. Rosen’s performance helped the Eagles get back to the .500 mark, as the team improved to 4-4-1 on the season with the two victories.

    Emory University senior Andrew Natalino scored both of the Eagles’ goals during two games last week. During Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Oglethorpe University, Natalino was able to finish a long cross into the box with a header past the Stormy Petrels’ keeper for the team’s only goal of the game. On Saturday’s 2-1 overtime loss at Berry College, the midfielder and co-captain scored the first goal of the game, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Natalino leads all Eagles this season with five goals and 10 points, and has scored four goals in his last three games. In addition, he currently ranks second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) in goals this season, and third in points. Natalino and the Eagles have opened the season with a 2-4-1 record.

    Emory University sophomore Dylan Price scored the game-winning goal in each of the team’s two victories last week. Price had a hand in all three of the Eagles’ goals during a 3-1 win over Maryville College (Tenn.) on Wednesday, assisting on the first score of the contest, converting a penalty kick for the eventual game winner in the 35th minute, and scoring an insurance goal by heading in a corner kick in the 88th minute. It was his second career multiple-goal game, and his five points in the game were a career high. On Friday, during a 4-0 win against Spalding University, the forward scored the first goal of the contest in the seventh minute, and led all Eagles with five shots and three shots on goal during the game. Price leads all Eagles with seven points this season, and is tied for the team lead with three goals. Price has helped Emory start the season with a 2-2-1 record.

    Emory University freshman Matt Sherr scored a late game-tying goal during his collegiate debut against Brewton-Parker College on Friday. Sherr helped the Eagles to a 1-1 tie against the Barons, coming off the bench to score the match equalizer in the 85th minute on a shot inside the box off a deflection. He finished the game with two shots, both of which were on goal. The following day, during a 1-0 overtime loss to Kean University, Sherr took two shots, one of which was on goal. Sherr was named to the Sonny Carter Invitational All-Tournament team for his efforts over the two games. The Eagles finished third at the Sonny Carter Invitational during the weekend with a 0-1-1 record.
