The Emory University Men’s Soccer Team recorded its
12th-consecutive season with a double-digit win total,
finishing its 2013 campaign with an overall record of 11-5-2.
The Eagles narrowly missed out on a berth to the NCAA Division III
Championships, finishing in a tie for second in the University
Athletic Association (UAA) with a 4-1-2 record in conference
play. Emory entered the final day of the regular season tied
with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Rochester for
first place in the UAA. The Eagles would go on to play
Carnegie Mellon, ranked 13th at the time, to a 1-1
double-overtime tie at the Woodruff Physical Education Center, but
a win from Rochester later in the day clinched the UAA title and
the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the
Yellowjackets. It was the fourth-consecutive top-three finish
in the conference for the Eagles, and the sixth top-three UAA
finish in seven years under Head Coach Sonny
Travis.
Emory was particularly strong when playing nationally-ranked
opponents during the season, going 2-1-2 against teams ranked in
the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top-25
in 2013. Highlights include a 2-0 road win against
then-23rd ranked Chicago and a 3-1 win at home against
12th-ranked Brandeis, along with 1-1 ties at home
against #15 Washington (Mo.) and #13 Carnegie Mellon. Emory
finished the season ranked fifth in the final NSCAA South Atlantic
Region poll.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by junior co-captain
Dylan Price, an all-UAA Second Team and all-South
Atlantic Third Team selection, who topped all Emory scorers with 10
goals and four assists for 24 points during the season, including
three game-winning goals. The Eagles’ attack also
benefitted from the emergence of all-UAA Honorable Mention freshman
Jason Andrejchak, who was second on the squad with
five goals and 13 points during his inaugural campaign with the
squad. Junior defender Jeffrey Cochran,
whose long throw-in was a key element in Emory’s offense
during the year, led all Eagles with seven assists during the
campaign, including a team-high three on game-winning goals.
Overall, Emory ended the year ranked 109th among the
over 400 Division III schools with 2.0 goals per game,
87th with 5.89 points per game, and 44th with
1.89 assists per game.
Meanwhile, the Eagles’ defense recorded a 1.08 team
goals-against average, the unit’s lowest mark since the 2010
season and the 127th-best mark in Division III in
2013. Sophomore center back Matt Sherr, who
helped the backline record six shutouts during the year, was the
Eagles’ lone representative on the all-UAA First Team, and
also earned a spot on the all-South Atlantic Third Team.
Sophomore Abe Hannigan, the all-UAA Second Team
goalkeeper, played all but 15 minutes during the year for Emory,
finishing the season with a 1.09 goals-against average and a 0.756
save percentage.
Emory opened the season by winning the 2013 Sonny Carter
Invitational, claiming a 6-2 win over Marian University (Wis.) and
a 1-0 win over Mississippi College. Price was named the
tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading all scorers
with three goals, while Sherr, junior midfielder Michael
Rheaume, senior forward Andrew Jones and
junior co-captain and defender Noah Rosen were
each selected to the all-tournament team.
The future appears bright for the Eagles, who will graduate just
one senior from the 2013 squad – all-UAA Honorable Mention
Andrew Jones. Price will enter his senior campaign in 2014
tied for 14th in school history with 29 goals and
19th with 66 points over his career, and just seven
game-winning goals short of the program’s career
record.
