2014 Emory Men's Soccer Athletes of the Week

    Emory University junior goalkeeper Abe Hannigan capped off his year with his eighth individual clean sheet of the season during the 14th-ranked Eagles 0-0 double-overtime draw at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. Hannigan faced 10 total shots in the game, turning away both of which were on goal for a pair of saves. He finished the regular season with a 0.56 goals-against average (the third-lowest mark in school history) and a .815 save percentage, to go along with a 12-3-2 overall record. In addition, his eight shutouts are tied for the second-most in school history in a season, one behind the school record set by Larry Meyer in 1986. Hannigan and the Eagles ended the 2014 regular season with a 13-3-2 record, including a 3-3-1 University Athletic Association (UAA) record, good for a third place finish in the conference.

    Emory University senior Dylan Price recorded the game-winning goal during the 24th-ranked Eagles 1-0 win over the University of Rochester on Friday night. Price broke a scoreless tie in the 82nd minute, taking possession of a blocked shot inside the box and sent a low shot past the keeper for his fifth goal of the season, and his second game-winning score. The shot was the lone attempt of the night for the forward, who came off the bench and logged 33 minutes of action in the game. Price leads all Eagles with 15 points this season (five goals and five assists), and ranks ninth in school history with 34 career goals, 14th with 81 points, and second with 13 game-winning goals. Price has helped Emory record a 13-3-1 record in 2014, including a 3-3-0 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) games, good for third place in the conference.

    Emory University senior Noah Rosen keyed a defensive effort that led to a pair of shutout wins in conference play for the 24th-ranked Eagles last weekend. Rosen played all 180 minutes during the two victories, limiting the two opponents to a combined four shots on goal, and 22 total shots. During Friday night’s 1-0 win over the University of Rochester, the center back helped hold the Yellowjackets to two shots on goal. He followed that by allowing just six shots to Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, with just a pair on goal, en route to another 1-0 win. Rosen has started all 16 games he has played in this season, leading an Emory defense that has recorded eight shutouts and a 0.57 goals-against average. The Eagles improved to 13-3-1 on the year with the two wins, and moved into third-place in the conference with a 3-3-0 University Athletic Association (UAA) record.

    Emory University senior midfielder Jeffrey Cochran assisted on three goals, including a pair of game-winning goals in overtime, to help the sixth-ranked Eagles to a pair of wins last week. All three of his assists during the week came on long throw-ins. He played 36 minutes against non-conference opponent Oglethorpe University on Wednesday, and assisted on Sebastian Hardington’s ‘golden goal’ with a long throw in the 107th minute that gave Emory a 2-1 double-overtime win. On Sunday, he assisted on both goals with long throws during a 2-1 overtime victory in the Eagles’ conference-opening win at Washington University (which entered the game as the 12th-ranked defensive team in Division III), including one on Matt Sherr’s game-winning goal in overtime. Cochran has four assists this season, including a pair on game-winning goal, and his nine career game winning assists are tied for the fourth most in the program’s history, and two behind Patrick Carver’s school record of 11. Cochran and the Eagles have won 11-straight games, and are one of 11 undefeated teams remaining in Division III with an 11-0-1 record.

    Emory University junior center back Matt Sherr co-captained the Eagles’ defense and scored a goal of his own to lead the sixth-ranked Eagles to a pair of victories last week. Sherr played all 200 minutes of action, helping hold the two teams to a combined 28 shots, with 11 on goal. During Wednesday’s 2-1 double-overtime win over Oglethorpe University, he played 107 minutes and took one shot, while limiting the Stormy Petrels to eight shots on goal. On Sunday, he helped the Eagles open conference play with a 2-1 overtime win at Washington University (Mo.), limiting the Bears to just eight total shots and three on goal, and scoring his first career ‘golden goal’ in the 93rd minute. For the season, Sherr has scored two goals and assisted on another, while helping the Eagles defense record a 0.56 GAA. Emory remained one of 11 undefeated teams in Division III with an 11-0-1 record in 2014.

    Emory University junior Sebastian Hardington scored three goals, including a pair of game winners, during a pair of wins for the seventh-ranked Eagles last week. During Wednesday night’s 2-0 win over regionally-ranked Birmingham-Southern College, Hardington scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, while playing a total of 57 minutes and taking two shots, both on goal. The forward followed that performance on Saturday with the first multiple-goal game of his career, scoring a pair against the University of the South, including the game winner in the 14th minute and a second on a penalty kick in the 85th minute. He played 52 minutes in the game, taking a pair of shots, both of which were again on goal. Hardington leads all Emory players and is tied for third among University Athletic Association (UAA) scorers with five goals this season, and his four game-winning goals are the most in the conference. Hardington and the Eagles have won nine-straight games, and are one of just 17 remaining undefeated teams in Division III with a 9-0-1 overall record.

    Emory University junior Matt Sherr co-captained a defense that notched a pair of shutouts last week, leading the seventh-ranked Eagles to two wins. Sherr was the only Emory field player to play all 180 minutes during the two games, helping hold the two opponents to a combined 16 shots and five shots on goal. The center back helped hold regionally-ranked and previously undefeated Birmingham-Southern College to just 10 shots, only four of which were on goal, during a 2-0 Eagles’ victory. He followed that by helping to limit the University of South to just six shots, with one on goal, in a 3-0 win on Sunday. Emory has a 0.48 goals-against average this season, including a 0.24 GAA and five shutouts in the seven games Sherr has played in this season. In addition, the Eagles have not allowed a goal in the last 415 minutes and 57 seconds of game time, spanning over the last five games. Sherr and the seventh-ranked Eagles are one of 17 remaining undefeated teams in Division III this season, and have won nine-straight games to improve to 9-0-1 overall.

    Emory University sophomore Jason Andrejchak scored the game-winning goal during the eighth-ranked Eagles 1-0 triumph at regionally-ranked Berry College on Saturday. Andrejchak struck for the game’s only goal in the 13th minute off an assist from Dylan Price. It was his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign, three of which have been game winners. Andrejchak also leads all Emory players with seven points this season. The Eagles have won seven-straight games to improve to 7-0-1 on the season.

    Emory University senior center back Noah Rosen helped lead the eighth-ranked Eagles to a shutout win on the road against Berry College on Saturday. Rosen played all 90 minutes of the affair, helping hold the Vikings to just four shots on goal, and 11 total shots. The shutout was the second-straight for Rosen and the Eagles’ defense, and the team’s fourth in the last six games. Rosen, a team co-captain, has helped the Eagles’ defense record a 0.60 goals-against average, while holding opponents to averages of 10.3 shots and 3.6 shots on goal per game. Rosen and the Eagles have won seven-straight games to improve to 7-0-1 for the 2014 season.

    Emory University junior Sebastian Hardington led the 13th-ranked Eagles with two goals, both game winners, and five points over three wins last week. On Wednesday, Hardington scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute to lift Emory to a 2-1 double-overtime win over Covenant College. During Saturday’s 5-1 win over Rhodes College at the Warrior Classic, the forward struck in the 27th minute with what would eventually be the game-winning goal. He led all players in the game with five shots and four shots on goal. Hardington wrapped up play at the Warrior Classic with an assist on a 72nd minute goal against host Hendrix College, taking three shots (including a pair on goal) during the game and helping the Eagles to a 3-0 victory. He was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts during the Warrior Classic. Hardington and the Eagles improved to 6-0-1 on the season.

    Emory University junior defender Matt Sherr was named the Most Valuable Player of the Warrior Classic last weekend, and helped the 13th-ranked Eagles to three wins last week. Sherr was a key member of an Emory defense that recorded a 0.63 goals-against average and held the opposition to 32 shots and 10 shots on goal during the three games, while also adding a goal and an assist of his own. On Wednesday night, Sherr played all 106 minutes of the Eagles’ 2-1 double-overtime win over Covenant, helping hold the Scots to just two shots on goal and assisting on the game-tying score in the 65th minute. At the Warrior Classic, the center back helped the Eagles defeat Rhodes College 5-1, playing 81 minutes and holding the Lynx to 10 shots and five shots on goal, while scoring his first goal of the season in the 71st minute. Sherr wrapped up play at the Warrior Classic on Sunday, leading Emory to a 3-0 win over host Hendrix College, allowing just 11 shots, including three on goal, to the Warriors in 84 minutes of action. Sherr has played in five of Emory’s seven games this season, helping the team record a 0.39 goals-against average and three shutouts in those contests. Sherr and the Eagles improved to 6-0-1 on the campaign with the three wins last weekend.

    Emory University sophomore forward Jason Andrejchak scored the game-winning goal in each of the 24th-ranked Eagles’ two victories at the Berry College Invitational last weekend. Andrejchak gave the Eagles an early lead on Saturday, scoring the first goal of the game in the 16th minute, en route to a 3-0 upset victory over 14th-ranked Ohio Northern University. The following day, he scored Emory’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Ramapo College in the 42nd minute of the game. Andrejchak is tied for the team lead in goals (two), assists (two) and points (six) this season. His play has helped Emory remain undefeated with a 3-0-1 record to start the 2014 season.

    Emory University junior goalkeeper Abe Hannigan recorded a pair of shutouts in as many games for the 24th-ranked Eagles at the Berry College Invitational last weekend. Hannigan played all 180 minutes in goal over the two games, making six saves during the weekend. In Saturday’s 3-0 upset victory over 14th-ranked Ohio Northern University, Hannigan made four saves, facing nine total shots from the Polar Bears. He followed that with a two-save performance in a 1-0 victory over Ramapo College on Sunday, facing six total shots in the game. Hannigan lowered his goals-against average to 0.71 and raised his save percentage to .786 with the two efforts, and moved into a tie for seventh-place in school history with 11 career shutouts. Hannigan and the Eagles have won three-straight games, and remain undefeated in 2014 with a 3-0-1 overall record.

    Emory University sophomore center back Scott Haley earned a spot on the Sonny Carter Invitational All-Tournament Team, playing 200 minutes for a short-handed Eagles’ defense and leading the squad to an undefeated weekend. Haley was the only Emory field player to play all 200 minutes of action during the weekend, helping the team yield just three goals for a 1.35 goals-against average. During Friday’s 1-1 double-overtime tie with Centre, Haley and the Emory defense limited Centre to six shots on goal. He followed that performance by holding Rutgers University – Newark to just three shots on goal and eight shots total in a 3-2 win.

    Emory University senior Dylan Price was named the Most Valuable Player of the Sonny Carter Invitational, helping the Eagles to a tournament victory with a 1-0-1 record during their opening two games of the 2014 campaign. Price combined to score two goals and assist on another during the two tournament contests, and became the first player in the 12-year history of the Sonny Carter Invitational to repeat as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. On Friday during Emory’s 1-1 double-overtime tie with Centre College, Price scored the Eagles’ only goal of the game in the 51st minute, while playing 85 total minutes in the game, and leading all players with six shots, including a pair on goal. During Saturday’s 3-2 win over Rutgers University – Newark, the forward helped the Eagles come-from-behind, assisting on the game-tying goal in the 48th minute and scoring the game-winning goal in the 83rd. Price now ranks 14th in school history with 31 career goals, and is third in the program’s history with 12 game-winning goals.
