The Emory University Men's Soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles remain in second place in the UAA standings with the draw at 2-1-1, a game and half behind first place University of Chicago (4-0). The Tartans sit tied for the third following the result at 1-1-2 in conference play.
Carnegie Mellon (9-2-2 overall) began the scoring early in the first half as Zach Masciopinto collected his ninth goal of the season. Masciopinto headed in the corner kick from Philip Petrakian just 1:56 into the game to give CMU the early one-goal advantage.
Later in the first half, the Eagles evened the score at 1-1 as junior Jason McCartney scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 35th minute. Junior Cody Gardiner had a header attempt following the free kick from sophomore Moustafa Khattab. Gardiner's shot bounced off a defender to sophomore Michael Stier who was able to get a toe on it to deflect it to McCartney, who finished it from just outside the net.
Emory (8-3-1 overall) had a chance to break the tie with 3:40 minutes remaining in regulation with one of their better scoring chances on the afternoon. Freshman William Jones had a sliding attempt inside the box after McCartney found him with the great cross. However, Jones' shot drilled the crossbar and went out of play.
Junior Adam Ferguson had a wide open look with 4:15 left to play in the first overtime session but his shot just sailed over the crossbar. Classmate Gabriel Vasconcelos tried to fire one home through in the waning seconds of the first overtime but his attempt found the shin guard of a Tartan defender.
The Eagles outshot Carnegie Mellon 22-8 including a 5-0 margin in the two overtime periods. McCartney led all players with five attempts.
The game was physical affair as the two teams combined for 22 fouls, nine yellow cards and one red card. Emory played with a man advantage for 63 minutes of game action after Carnegie Mellon's Cooper Tubiana was ejected after his second yellow card in the 47th minute.
The Eagles return to the pitch this Saturday as they travel to Lookout Mountain, GA to face Covenant College in the final non-conference matchup of the 2016 season. The game is set to get underway at 4:00 pm.
