Khattab's First Half Goal Lifts Emory Men's Soccer to Win at NYU

After seeing its season best five-game unbeaten streak snapped on Friday night, the Emory University Men's Soccer team returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon, defeating New York University 1-0 at Gaelic Park on the campus of Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York.

Sophomore Moustafa Khattab broke a scoreless tie in the 38th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Khattab drilled the corner of the net on the far post with a strike from 25 yards out to give Emory (10-4-1, 3-2-1 UAA) a 1-0 edge.

The Eagles had a flurry of shots in the waning minutes of the first half to try and increase their lead but were denied by NYU's Lucas Doucette. In the 44th minute, freshman William Jones had a shot from outside the box that Doucette made a nice kick save on. Moments later, sophomore Aidan Datené fired a shot from 20 yards out but Doucette made an all-out two-handed save. In the 45 minute, Khattab laid out with full extension for a header shot right outside of the net but Doucette got a hand on the shot to knock it wide.

Emory finished with 16 shots in the contest, outshooting the Violets (8-7-2, 2-4-0 UAA) 16-6 including an 11-1 margin in shots on goal. Khattab and junior Jason McCartney led all players with four shots, two on goal.

The six shots allowed by the Emory defense were the second lowest total recorded by an opposing team on the season as the Eagles backline earned their fifth shutout of the year and second in the last three matches. Junior Jake Deuel made one save on the afternoon to improve to 8-2-1 while collecting his second clean sheet.

Emory will head to Rochester next Saturday night for the final game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.
