Three from Emory Men's Soccer Named to All-UAA Team

UAA RELEASE

The Emory University Men's Soccer team saw three players selected to the All-University Athletic Association Team as announced by the conference office on Monday morning.

Junior Jason McCartney represented the Eagles on the First Team while junior Cody Gardiner and sophomore Moustafa Khattab were named to the Second Team.

This is McCartney's second consecutive appearance on the All-Association team after garnering Second Team honors as a sophomore. McCartney started in all 16 games and was the go-to option on offense for the Eagles, finishing with team-highs in goals (7), assists (7), points, (21), shots (41), shots on goal (24) and game-winning goals (3), figures all marking career-bests. The junior captain racked up four points in seven UAA contests, collecting a pair of assists in wins over then-ranked #8 Washington and Case Western Reserve and scoring a goal in the team's 1-1 tie against Carnegie Mellon. Earlier this season, McCartney was also recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) being named to the Academic All-District team for his performance on the field and in the classroom.

Gardiner makes his first career appearance on the All-UAA team after starting in all 16 games and serving as the defensive captain. Gardiner anchored a defensive unit that allowed 20 goals in 16 contests, good for a 1.20 goals-against average and limited opponents to averages of 10.4 shots and 4.1 shots on goal per game. In addition, Gardiner posted a career-high five points on the strength of his first two career goals in wins over Berry (2-1) and Covenant (4-0) while assisting on McCartney's tally against the Tartans in UAA play. Last month, Gardiner joined McCartney on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Like Gardiner, Khattab earns his first All-UAA selection after a tremendous sophomore campaign. Khattab appeared in 14 games, making 13 starts, finishing second on the team with 14 points thanks to five goals and four assists. Three of his markers went for game-winners in victories over Oglethorpe (3-2), then-ranked #8 Washington (2-1) and NYU (1-0), tying for the team lead in that category. The Toronto, Ontario native added career-best marks in shots (25) and shots on goal (14).

The Eagles finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 10-5-1 and 3-3-1 mark in conference play, good for a fourth place finish.
