The Emory University Men's Soccer team wrapped up the 2016 season with a 10-5-1 overall record to go along with a 3-3-1 mark in University Athletic Association contests to finish fourth in the conference standings, one point behind second place Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis. It marked the 16^th consecutive winning season for the Eagles and the 14^th season in the last 15 years with at least 10 or more victories.

Emory's 2016 slate of games ranked among the toughest in Division III, with a strength-of-schedule of .600, and six teams reaching the NCAA Tournament including eventual national semifinalist Brandeis University. The Eagles were 2-3-1 in such games against programs that earned postseason bids with victories over 8^th-ranked Washington University and Maryville University along with a tie against Carnegie Mellon University.

Emory began the season with five wins in their first eight contests before rattling off a season-long five game unbeaten streak including some of the more dramatic victories of the season. The Eagles kicked off the streak with an overtime victory against Birmingham-Southern on October 4^th. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half, the Panthers tied the score with two of their own in the second half including the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Junior Jason McCartney came through in the clutch however, netting one of his team-high three game-winning goals on the year, scoring the golden goal in the 100^th minute to give Emory a 3-2 victory.

Four days later, the Eagles knocked off No.-8 WashU, 2-1, behind sophomore Moustafa Khattab's late goal in the 87^th minute. It was the second straight season the Eagles upended a Top-20 Washington team and Emory's first win over a team ranked as high as eighth in the NSCAA Top-25 poll since November 3^rd, 2012 against No.-6 Carnegie Mellon.

The following week, Emory earned another UAA victory, defeating Case Western Reserve 2-1 in double overtime on Senior Night. Junior Gabriel Vasconcelos provided the heroics for the Eagles, firing home the game-winner in the 103^rd minute off the feed from junior Michael Carragher. Emory rounded out the unbeaten streak with a 1-1 tie against CMU and a 4-0 victory at Covenant.

The Eagles split the next two games against Brandeis (L, 2-0) and New York University (W, 1-0) to set up a must-win matchup at University of Rochester in the season finale in order to earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Yellowjackets took the lead in the 29^th minute on an Emory own goal that proved to be the difference in the 1-0 final. Juniors Christian Meyer and Georges Daoud had Emory's best scoring opportunities to try and tie the score in the final seconds but UofR's goalkeeper Patrick Conway made two tremendous saves to thwart Emory's chances. First, Conway made an outstanding diving stop on Meyer's rifle from outside the 18 before regrouping and saving Daoud's volley attempt on the rebound to preserve the victory for Rochester.

McCartney and Khattab led all Emory players offensively in 2016, finishing with 21 and 14 points respectively. McCartney recorded his best season to date, posting team- and career-highs in goals, assists, points, shots, shots on goal, game-winning goals and was named to the All-UAA team for the season straight season, earning First Team honors. Khattab built upon his great freshman season, netting five goals and four assists and tied McCartney for the team lead in game-winning goals. He was selected to the All-UAA Second Team for the first time in his career.

Joining Khattab on the All-UAA Second Team was junior Cody Gardiner. Gardiner anchored an Emory defensive unit also featuring starters Daoud, junior Adam Ferguson and sophomore Aidan Datené that finished the year with a 1.20 goals-against average, allowing just 20 goals in 16 games, while holding opponents to averages of 10.4 shots and 4.1 shots on goal per game. Junior Jake Deuel emerged as the team's starting goalkeeper in the early stages of the season, ending the campaign with an 8-3-1 record, 35 saves and a 1.05 GAA in 12 games between the posts.

McCartney and Gardiner added NSCAA South Atlantic All-Region selections for the first time in their careers with McCartney making the Second Team and Gardiner being named to the Third Team. The duo also earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District kudos for their performances in the classroom and on the playing field. In addition, McCartney became just the 10^th player in program history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-America, earning a spot on the Third Team.

Despite narrowly missing out on a bid to the NCAA Tournament, the team enters with high hopes of making a return trip to the postseason in 2017, graduating just two seniors in Scott Haley and Jason Andrejchak and retaining a majority of the 2016 squad including nine starters.
