Khattab, McCartney Carry Emory Past NC Wesleyan, 3-0, in Season Opener

Junior Moustafa Khattab and senior Jason McCartney accounted for the Emory offense in the season opener Friday afternoon as the duo combined to score all three goals in a 3-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

Khattab began the scoring in the 25th minute as the third-year midfielder drove a free kick from just outside the 18 to the left of a wall of Battling Bishop defenders and past a diving goalkeeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

McCartney doubled the Emory lead 12 minutes later as classmate Christian Meyer provided McCartney with a perfect pass through two defenders before McCartney beat the NCW keeper one-on-one for the marker.

In the 62nd minute, McCartney put the finishing touches on the Battling Bishops with his second goal of the contest. McCartney headed the feed from an Adam Ferguson corner kick off the crossbar and into the back of the net to supply Emory with the 3-0 final margin.

Friday marked the second career two-goal game for the Raleigh, NC native as he netted two tallies in a 3-2 overtime win at Birmingham-Southern last season.

The win also marked the first-ever victory for Interim Head Coach Cory Greiner in his coaching career as he took over coaching duties of the Eagles in the second week of August following the departure of long-time head coach Sonny Travis.

Emory continues the Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday evening as the Eagles will face Pacific Lutheran University at 7:00 PM. The Lutes were upended 2-1 by Oglethorpe University on Friday.
